IB & IGCSE in Mangaldoi

Taking an IB or IGCSE course from Mangaldoi: what to expect

Mangaldoi is the headquarters of Darrang district, on the north bank of the Brahmaputra and roughly a two-hour drive from Guwahati along the Tezpur highway. Tea gardens, paddy, jute and vegetable markets shape the surrounding economy, and Assamese is the everyday language of most households. Schools here teach under SEBA or CBSE, with AHSEC colleges taking over after Class 10. A child on an international syllabus is rare, so those who choose one tend to have a specific plan.

For anyone searching for IB and IGCSE tutors in Mangaldoi, the practical truth is that teaching happens through a screen. Nobody turns up at your gate; in-person home visits are restricted to Gurugram and certain parts of Delhi NCR. What you receive is a private lesson at home, taught live over video by a person who has handled the same specification with students elsewhere.

That arrangement suits a district town where specialist teachers are scarce and the road to Guwahati can be slow in the rains. A student keeps their regular school day and simply adds a weekly hour or two with a subject expert.

IB Gram is an independent tutoring service. It is not connected with the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge, Pearson or any school mentioned below, and it does not handle admissions or promise grades. Tutors teach and give feedback, while the Internal Assessment, Extended Essay, TOK essay and coursework remain the student's own work.

At a glance

  • Support for IB PYP, MYP, Diploma and Career-related study
  • Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE, tier by tier
  • One student in each lesson, same tutor each week
  • A short written note after every session for parents
  • Slots that avoid Bohag Bihu, Durga Puja and flood disruptions
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to Mangaldoi school years

We could not confirm an IB or IGCSE school inside Mangaldoi, so most families meet these programmes through a Guwahati school, a relocation plan or an online route. This is how each stage looks from a Darrang household.

PYPNursery to Class 5, ages 3 to 11

IB Primary Years Programme

Children work through big themes by asking questions, testing ideas and reflecting on what they found. A final-year Exhibition lets each pupil present a self-chosen inquiry.

A younger learner in Darrang gains from extra English listening and speaking, since home and school language is usually Assamese. A river, a tea garden or the Orang wildlife area can anchor an Exhibition topic.

MYPClass 6 to 10, ages 11 to 16

IB Middle Years Programme

Subjects are marked against stated criteria rather than a single paper, so explaining reasoning counts as much as the final answer. A Personal Project closes the programme.

Pupils coming from SEBA textbooks usually need a few lessons on writing out the reasoning, designing a fair test and reflecting in sentences, which is where tutoring pays off first.

DPClass 11 and 12, ages 16 to 19

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects over two years, three at Higher Level, combined with the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS. Written exams arrive in May or November, and internal assessment feeds each final grade.

Mangaldoi students often aim at Gauhati University, Cotton University, IIT Guwahati or study abroad. We map lesson hours against that target from the first month of Class 11.

CPClass 11 and 12, ages 16 to 19

IB Career-related Programme

A smaller set of Diploma courses sits beside a career-related study and a reflective project.

We have seen almost no demand for the CP from Darrang. If it applies to you, we handle the academic courses and help pace the project.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Mangaldoi

01

Are there IB and IGCSE schools in Mangaldoi, and who studies them?

No school in Mangaldoi could be confirmed as an IB World School or a Cambridge or Edexcel centre. The town's schools teach SEBA or CBSE courses, and the colleges beyond Class 10 follow the AHSEC pattern. That is the honest starting point, and it shapes how an international course reaches a Darrang child.

The families who ask us are a mixed group. Some are planning a move to Guwahati or abroad and want their child ready for a new syllabus. Others work for banks, tea companies or government departments and may be posted elsewhere. A few simply want an international qualification for a child who is aiming at overseas study from an early age.

Students therefore meet the IB or IGCSE through an online school, a school in another city, or as private candidates. In each case the weekly learning load falls on the student at home, and a tutor fills the gap that a school classroom would normally cover.

When a school is not nearby, the questions change. Which exam centre will the student use? Who invigilates practicals? What does the school want as evidence of prior learning? We help families think through these points, though registrations and entries are always handled by the school or centre, not by us.

02

SEBA, AHSEC, CBSE, IB or IGCSE: which fits a Mangaldoi child?

The boards differ in what they reward, and the right one depends on the next step. SEBA and AHSEC lead naturally into Assam's universities and state-level entrance routes. CBSE adds a national syllabus and clear alignment with JEE and NEET. IGCSE builds subject depth with flexible choices at Class 9 and 10. The IB is a broader two-year Diploma with a core of research, reflection and service.

The table gives a plain side-by-side view. It is not a ranking, since a child who is content with the local board and aiming at an Assam institution may not need anything else.

Where a family does choose the IB or IGCSE, the largest adjustment is writing. Answers at this level are longer, marked against criteria, and expect a student to justify choices. A Mangaldoi student fluent in Assamese often needs support turning knowledge into precise English prose, and that is a significant part of what tutors do.

Whichever route is chosen, a plan for Class 11 matters most. Switching boards at Class 9 is easy; switching at Class 11 is harder, since the Diploma assumes a prior grounding in the sciences and mathematics that IGCSE gives.

03

What does IB and IGCSE tuition cost in Mangaldoi?

  • Course and level (HL, SL, Core, Extended)
  • Hours per week and length of commitment
  • Closeness of the exam session
  • Tutor experience with the specific syllabus

We do not publish a rate card, because the rate depends on factors that differ for each child. Instead, you receive a quote in writing before anything is booked, and the first lesson is free so you can judge the fit before agreeing to anything.

Four things move the figure. First, the course: IB HL Mathematics or Physics asks for a tutor with deeper experience than an MYP Science tutor. Second, the level of the student, since a tutor working with a Class 12 Diploma candidate is not the same as one supporting a Class 7 beginner. Third, the weekly hours; a single hour a week costs less in total than an intensive block. Fourth, how close the exam is.

What a Mangaldoi family does not pay for is travel. No tutor commutes, no vehicle is hired, and lessons do not depend on the state of the road to Guwahati. The only practical requirements are a laptop or tablet, a steady connection and a quiet corner.

Compare the total with realistic alternatives. A relocation for school costs far more, and a lesson from a general tutor who lacks the syllabus can cost less per hour yet more in lost marks. Ask us to quote two plans, a lighter weekly one and a heavier exam-term one, and decide with the numbers in hand.

04

Online home tuition, a local coaching class, a private teacher or self-study?

Four approaches are open to a family in Darrang, and each has a clear job. Online one-to-one lessons bring in a specialist who knows the syllabus. A local coaching class gives routine and peer company but follows SEBA, AHSEC or CBSE. A private teacher in town is convenient and trusted but may not know IB or IGCSE marking. Self-study works for disciplined older students with good material.

Many students combine two. A common pattern is school or an online school for the structure, an online IB or IGCSE tutor once or twice a week for the hard topics, and self-study on past papers for the rest.

The table below compares them on the points families ask about. Online tutoring is the only option in this list that places a person who has taught the specification at your table without a journey.

A note on safety and comfort: lessons take place in a shared family space or with a parent nearby, and notes are sent after each session so a parent can follow progress without sitting through the class.

Exam calendar and the local year in Mangaldoi

International exams run on a calendar that does not match Assam's year, so planning has to be deliberate. IB Diploma papers arrive in May and November. Cambridge and Edexcel IGCSE run in May-June and October-November, with a January session for Edexcel in some subjects. Local SEBA and AHSEC exams sit in February and March, and a student sitting both has a crowded spring.

Local events matter too. Bohag Bihu in mid-April falls close to the summer exam run, Magh Bihu in January interrupts winter revision, and Kati Bihu in October sits before the autumn session. Durga Puja usually takes a full week of attention in autumn, and Eid and Christmas bring their own breaks for families who observe them.

The monsoon from June to September is the heavy factor in Darrang. Flooding and waterlogging can cut roads and power, so we avoid putting essential lessons on the worst days, record sessions on request, and keep a make-up slot in reserve.

The table lays out a typical year and what we usually do in each stretch. Dates change, and you should always check the current timetable from the board or school.

06

Where can a Mangaldoi student go after the IB or IGCSE?

An IB Diploma or a run of IGCSE and A Level results opens several doors. Within Assam, students look at Gauhati University, Cotton University, IIT Guwahati, Tezpur University and Dibrugarh University. Outside the state, Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru and Kolkata are common targets, and abroad the UK, Canada, Australia and the US.

For Indian universities, an IB Diploma is generally treated as equivalent to the Class 12 qualification once the Association of Indian Universities recognises it, and CUET-UG can be taken by IB and Cambridge students for central university admissions. Always check the latest rule with the institution. JEE Main and NEET have their own eligibility conditions regarding subjects and board, which each family should confirm on the official pages.

For students heading overseas, predicted grades, a strong Extended Essay and a well-planned subject mix matter. The choice between Maths AA and AI influences engineering, economics and science applications differently, and we discuss it early.

From a smaller town, the practical issue is often information rather than ability. Families have fewer people nearby who have been through the process. We can explain how the stages fit together, though counsellors and the universities themselves remain the final authority.

07

IB Maths AA or AI, and the sciences: what a Mangaldoi student should know

IB Mathematics Analysis and Approaches suits students who enjoy algebra, calculus and proof and who may move toward engineering, physics or pure mathematics. Applications and Interpretation is better for those whose strengths lie in statistics, modelling and technology, such as future economists, social scientists and business students.

Students trained in SEBA or CBSE mathematics are usually quick at procedures. The IB shifts the target to communication: a correct answer with sparse working loses marks, and the Exploration asks for a self-designed investigation with reflection. We practise writing arguments out in full and choosing a topic with real data.

In the sciences, the Diploma pairs content with practical investigation. Physics and Chemistry reward careful units, uncertainty and clear method. Biology has the largest vocabulary and a strong emphasis on data interpretation. HL adds depth, particularly in organic chemistry, fields and genetics.

At IGCSE, the choice between Core and Extended, or Edexcel Foundation and Higher, decides how high a grade is possible. Students aiming at IB Maths HL or science Higher Level are usually advised toward Extended or Higher, and often Additional Mathematics as well.

Practical work needs a plan. Without a school lab, a student may rely on videos, simulations and a registered centre for assessed practicals; we help with the written practical paper and lab-report style, not with supplying equipment.

08

How should a Mangaldoi student choose IGCSE subjects and tiers?

  • Confirm board, code and tier before the first lesson
  • Pick subjects that match the intended Diploma or A Level path
  • Plan an exam centre early, as seats fill in advance
  • Keep a spare slot for one weak subject

Most IGCSE candidates take five to eight subjects. A sensible core for a student heading to the sciences is Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with Additional Mathematics or Computer Science as an extra. Those leaning toward commerce might swap in Economics and Business Studies.

Tier choice is the decision that is most often made too late. Core papers cap the grade at C for Cambridge, while Extended opens A* to E. Edexcel Foundation and Higher work in a similar way. A student who may want a science Diploma later should plan for Extended or Higher from the start.

Language options deserve thought as well. Assamese and Hindi may be offered as a language option in some set-ups, while English can be taken as First or Second Language depending on how fluent the student is. A tutor can read a sample answer and say which is realistic.

A final practical point: choose the board first, then the subjects. Cambridge and Edexcel syllabuses are not interchangeable in content or question style, and a tutor needs the exact code to prepare you properly.

Where we tutor

Where in Darrang our online IB and IGCSE tutors reach students

Every lesson runs on screen, so the place affects timing and connection, not travel. The notes explain how the day tends to run so we can fix workable slots. Tutors do not travel to any of these areas.

Mangaldoi town centre

Market streets, offices and the district administration; broadband is steady in most homes, with evening noise near the bazaar.

Highway side and Tezpur road

Families who commute to Guwahati or Tezpur for work often prefer later evening slots.

Mangaldoi College area

A student-heavy neighbourhood where many households have a teacher or lecturer, and homework routines are well established.

Dalgaon

A nearby town with its own schools and a fast-growing group of families asking about international study.

Sipajhar

A block town to the east where mobile data often carries the lesson.

Kharupetia

A market town on the road toward Kalaigaon, with mixed connectivity and busy weekly haats.

Dhula and Bechimari

Smaller settlements where lessons need to be set around power cuts and monsoon waterlogging.

Orang and the tea estate belt

Tea-garden families, with schedules that follow plucking seasons and estate working hours.

Patharighat and the river side

Low-lying villages affected by flood-season disruptions, where we keep recordings and make-up slots in reserve.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Mangaldoi

Mangaldoi town: few local options

Local schools follow SEBA or CBSE. No IB or IGCSE school in town could be confirmed, so international study here usually happens privately or online.

    Nearby: Guwahati

    Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Mangaldoi: your questions answered

Is there home tuition for the IB and IGCSE in Mangaldoi?+

Yes, but it is online home tuition. Your child studies at home on a laptop and a specialist teaches live over video. Tutors do not visit homes in Mangaldoi, because in-person home visits run only in Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR. Many families find the online route better, since they get a tutor who knows the syllabus rather than the nearest available teacher. Lessons are one-to-one, at a fixed weekly time, with notes sent afterwards.

Does any school in Mangaldoi teach the IB or IGCSE?+

We could not confirm one. Schools in town follow SEBA or CBSE, and we name no school we cannot verify. Students who follow an international course usually do so through an online school, a school in Guwahati or another city, or as a private candidate. If you know of a local option, tell us and we will check it. Either way, online tutoring works alongside whichever route you choose.

How much does IB or IGCSE tuition cost in Mangaldoi?+

The rate is quoted in writing before you book, and the first lesson is free. We do not publish prices because they depend on the course, level, weekly hours and how close the exam is. HL subjects and exam-term intensives cost more than a single SL or Core lesson. There is no travel cost. Ask for two options, a lighter weekly plan and a heavier one, and compare them.

Can my child take a trial lesson first?+

Yes, the first lesson is free and carries no obligation. It runs over video with a tutor matched to the course, and it doubles as a diagnostic so the tutor can see where marks are being lost. You can then decide whether to continue, ask for a different tutor, or stop. Afterwards you get the written rate before anything is booked.

Which IB subjects do you cover for Mangaldoi students?+

We cover most Diploma subjects, including Maths AA and AI, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, Business Management, Geography, Environmental Systems and Societies, Computer Science, English and language acquisition, plus TOK and Extended Essay guidance. MYP Sciences and Mathematics and PYP support are available as well. Tell us the subject and level, and we will confirm a tutor has taught it.

Do you teach Cambridge and Edexcel IGCSE both?+

Yes, both boards. Cambridge codes such as 0580 and 0606 and Edexcel codes such as 4MA1 are taught by tutors who know their paper styles. We ask for the exact code and tier first, since Core and Extended or Foundation and Higher need different preparation. Let us know the exam session and the centre, and we plan backwards from the date.

Will you write my child's IA, Extended Essay or coursework?+

No. Tutors coach and explain, but the Internal Assessment, Extended Essay, TOK essay and coursework must be the student's own work. A tutor can help choose a topic, plan a method, check that the criteria are understood and give feedback on drafts. Writing the submission would break the rules of the IB and the exam boards, so we do not do it.

What happens in a flood or power cut?+

We plan around it. If the connection fails, the lesson can move to another slot, and on request we record sessions so nothing is lost. Monsoon months are the time to book a little extra flexibility. Students in low-lying areas near the river are given a make-up slot in reserve. We would rather rearrange than push through a broken connection.

Can a Class 9 student from an SEBA or CBSE school switch to IGCSE?+

Yes, and Class 9 is the easiest point to do so. The main gaps are English writing, experimental method and the way papers are marked. A short transition block in the first months helps most. We also advise on tier choice, since the decision made at Class 9 affects what is available later.

Is the IB Diploma accepted for admission in Assam's universities?+

Generally yes, once equivalence is recognised, but each institution sets its own conditions. The Association of Indian Universities issues equivalence for the IB Diploma, and central universities may ask for CUET-UG. Please check with Gauhati University, Cotton University, IIT Guwahati or the relevant institution for the current rules, as we cannot speak for them.

Can IB students apply for JEE or NEET?+

Eligibility depends on subjects and recognition, and the rules change, so confirm on the official notices. Broadly, a student with the right science subjects and a recognised qualification may be eligible. We can help plan a subject mix with that in mind, though the official bodies and counsellors hold the final word on eligibility.

    What time are lessons held?+

Lessons run in IST, usually early evenings after school and on weekend mornings. Weekday slots avoid the usual school and coaching hours, and we leave out Bihu and Puja days. Exam-term intensives can be heavier. You choose a regular hour and we match a tutor who can keep it.

What equipment does my child need?+

A laptop or tablet, a steady internet connection, headphones and a quiet place. A pen-input device or a camera pointed at paper helps for Mathematics. For the sciences, a scientific or graphing calculator that the syllabus allows is needed. Mobile data works, but a fixed line is more reliable in the rains.

How do I find out how my child is doing?+

After each session you receive a short written note covering what was taught, what went well and what to practise. You can also message us if something looks wrong, and we can change the tutor if the fit is poor. Parents are welcome to sit in at the start of a session or talk to the tutor briefly afterward.

Is IB Gram connected with the IB or any school?+

No. We are an independent tutoring service with no affiliation to the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge, Pearson or any school. We do not run admissions, and we cannot promise grades or places. What we offer is teaching, feedback and a plan.

    How do I get started?+
