IB and IGCSE Tutors and Online Home Tuition in Madikeri

A parent in Madikeri looking for IB or IGCSE home tuition hits the same wall every time: no school anywhere in Kodagu could be confirmed as teaching either syllabus, and the tuition centres along Kohinoor Road are built around SSLC and II PUC batches. We answer that with private one-to-one tuition taken from home over live video, with a tutor who has already taught the exact course your child sits, whether that child studies here or boards away and comes back for the holidays.

  • A written note follows every lesson, so you know exactly what was covered that evening
  • Tutors coach the thinking behind an IA, Extended Essay or TOK essay and never write any of it
  • If the match is wrong, you change tutor at no cost and keep the same slot
  • Rates are confirmed to you in writing before the first paid lesson, never afterwards
  • Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE both covered, alongside IB PYP, MYP, DP and CP

IB & IGCSE in Madikeri

What a Madikeri parent is really solving for

Madikeri is a town of roughly thirty-three thousand people sitting at about 1,170 metres in the Western Ghats, and it runs its education the way it runs everything else: locally, thoroughly, and within the Karnataka state system. Literacy here is around 85 per cent, well above the national figure, and the schools in town do a genuinely solid job of SSLC and II PUC. What they do not do is teach an international syllabus. That single gap is why nearly every enquiry we get from Kodagu looks the same, and why IB and IGCSE tutors in Madikeri are almost always found somewhere other than Madikeri.

The families who write to us fall into a few recognisable groups. There are serving and retired defence officers, a very large constituency in Kodagu, whose children moved between schools in three states before Class 9 and have landed on a Cambridge syllabus somewhere. There are planter households whose children board in Mysuru, Mangaluru or Bengaluru and reach home for Dasara and Puthari carrying a term's worth of unfinished Diploma work. There are families returning from the Gulf, Australia or the United Kingdom, where a child was already mid-IGCSE. And there are students enrolled with an online international school, studying from a house on an estate road, with no classroom at all.

None of those situations is solved by a local batch. A Madikeri tuition centre that teaches excellent state-syllabus Physics has never seen a Paper 2 data-analysis question or marked work against IB criteria. So the practical answer is a tutor matched to the specification rather than to the postcode, teaching over live video, on a fixed evening slot in IST. That is what this page is about: what that looks like week to week, what it costs and what drives the cost, which schools near Kodagu actually teach these programmes, and how the Madikeri calendar of heavy monsoon, Dasara and harvest fits around two Diploma exam sessions.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to Madikeri school years

All four IB programmes come up in Kodagu enquiries, though rarely for the reason you would expect. Primary and middle-years work usually arrives from families on an online school roll or mid-relocation; Diploma work almost always arrives from a student boarding outside the district. We teach whichever stage your child is actually on, from whatever point the school has reached.

PYPClass 1-5, ages 6-11

Primary Years Programme

Inquiry-led primary learning where units are built around transdisciplinary themes rather than textbook chapters, and a child is asked to wonder aloud before being told the answer.

In Kodagu, PYP support is almost entirely for children enrolled with an online international primary school or newly arrived from a PYP campus abroad. We work on reading stamina, number fluency and the habit of writing up what they found out, so the switch into MYP later is not a shock.

MYPClass 6-10, ages 11-16

Middle Years Programme

Five years of broad study across eight subject groups, assessed on four published criteria per subject, finishing with a personal project that the student plans and carries out largely alone.

MYP enquiries from Madikeri cluster in Years 4 and 5, when criterion-based marking starts to matter and a student who scored well on recall suddenly finds marks sitting in investigation and reflection. Personal project supervision over video works well here, since the fieldwork often happens on the family's own land.

DPClass 11-12, ages 16-19

Diploma Programme

Six subjects across three higher levels and three standard levels, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service, examined in May or November.

This is the bulk of our Kodagu work. Most of these students are in boarding schools in Mysuru, Mangaluru or Bengaluru and keep their weekly lesson running from home through every holiday, which means progress does not stall for six weeks at a stretch.

CPClass 11-12, ages 16-19

Career-related Programme

A career-focused study combining IB courses with an approved career-related qualification, a reflective project and a personal and professional skills course.

CP is rare in Karnataka and rarer still in Kodagu, but it does appear in enquiries from families whose child wants hospitality or business training alongside academic subjects, which is not a strange ambition in a district built on homestays and plantations. We teach the IB course components and the reflective project.

Subject coverage

IB subjects we tutor

These are the IB courses we are asked for most often from Kodagu. Tell us the subject, the level and the session your child is sitting, and we shortlist tutors who have taught that precise combination rather than something adjacent to it.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

SL and HL

Proof, calculus and algebraic fluency, with the HL course going considerably further into series, complex numbers and the optional topics. The course most Kodagu students ask for help with first.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

SL and HL

Modelling, statistics and the graphic display calculator used properly. A good fit for students heading towards business, design or the life sciences rather than engineering.

Physics

SL and HL

Mechanics through to fields, induction and the nuclear topics, with real attention to uncertainty treatment, which is where marks quietly disappear in the internal assessment.

Chemistry

SL and HL

Structure and reactivity taught together rather than as separate memory lists, plus organic mechanisms and the energetics calculations that reward careful layout.

Biology

SL and HL

Unity and diversity through to continuity and change, with command-term discipline drilled hard, since biology answers lose marks on wording more often than on content.

Environmental Systems and Societies

SL and HL

Systems thinking, ecological footprints and environmental value systems. Students on Western Ghats land often have the most grounded case studies in their own cohort.

Economics

SL and HL

Microeconomics, macroeconomics and the global economy, with diagram technique and commentary structure practised against published mark schemes.

Business Management

SL and HL

Organisational structure, marketing, finance and operations, with the tools applied to a real business rather than recited. Plantation and homestay ventures make useful source material.

Computer Science

SL and HL

Algorithmic thinking, data structures and the HL abstract data types, plus steady work on the solution and its documentation.

English A: Language and Literature

SL and HL

Guided analysis of literary and non-literary texts, the individual oral and the comparative essay, with a lot of attention paid to reading a text closely rather than summarising it.

English B

SL and HL

For students whose stronger language is Kannada, Kodava Takk, Malayalam or Hindi, working on writing in register, listening comprehension and the individual oral.

Hindi B

SL and HL

Reading, writing and speaking Hindi for second-language candidates, which frequently suits students whose earlier schooling happened outside Karnataka on a defence posting.

Kannada A: Literature

SL, often school-supported self-taught

Where a school allows it, Kannada literature taken as a self-taught standard level course, planned carefully because the reading list and the oral both have to be organised without a classroom teacher.

Geography

SL and HL

Freshwater systems, hazards, urban environments and the global interactions option, with fieldwork design discussed properly before the student collects a single reading.

Psychology

SL and HL

Biological, cognitive and sociocultural approaches, research methods and the experimental study write-up, taught around a clear essay structure.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Core, all DP students

Narrowing a research question until it is answerable, building an exhibition that actually engages with its objects, and planning an essay in stages. We coach; the student writes every word.

IGCSE coverage

IGCSE subjects we tutor

On the IGCSE side we cover both Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel. One honest note for Kodagu families: there is no Kannada IGCSE, so a child who wants to keep Kannada going usually does it through school, through a state-board paper or at home, while Hindi is available to Cambridge candidates as a second language.

Mathematics

Core and Extended

The whole Extended syllabus including the functions, trigonometry and vector work, with past-paper timing drilled so a student is not finishing Paper 4 in a rush.

Additional Mathematics

Cambridge

A sensible bridge for anyone aiming at Maths AA HL or A Level later, covering calculus and further algebra ahead of time.

Physics

Core and Extended

Motion, thermal physics, waves, electricity and atomic physics, with the alternative-to-practical paper taught as its own skill rather than an afterthought.

Chemistry

Core and Extended

Bonding, moles, rates, organic families and the full qualitative analysis table, which is pure marks for a student who has actually learned it.

Biology

Core and Extended

Cells, transport, coordination, reproduction and ecology, with diagram labelling and data questions practised every session.

Co-ordinated and Combined Sciences

Double and single award

For students taking the sciences together rather than separately, mapped carefully so nothing from the three strands is quietly skipped.

English, First Language

Cambridge and Edexcel

Directed writing, composition and reading response, with the inserted-text questions worked through until the student reads for the question and not for the gist.

English as a Second Language

Core and Extended

Listening, reading and writing in register, plus the speaking test, built for students who came through Kannada or Malayalam medium primary schooling.

Economics

Cambridge and Edexcel

Price mechanism, market failure, government policy and development, with data-response technique and structured essay planning.

Business Studies

Cambridge and Edexcel

Business objectives, marketing, people and finance, taught with worked case material so the analysis marks are reachable.

Computer Science

Cambridge and Edexcel

Data representation, hardware, networks and algorithms, with pseudocode and programming practice both taken seriously.

Information and Communication Technology

Cambridge

The theory paper plus the practical documents and spreadsheet and database tasks, which need method and neatness as much as knowledge.

Hindi as a Second Language

Cambridge

Reading, writing and the oral component, useful for students whose Hindi came from a few years of schooling elsewhere in India.

Geography

Cambridge and Edexcel

Population, settlement, rivers, coasts and economic development, with skills questions and the geographical investigation both covered.

Global Perspectives

Cambridge

Research, collaboration and the individual report, taught as a thinking course rather than a content one, and a genuinely useful rehearsal for Diploma core work.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around Madikeri school timetables

There is one thing we have to say plainly before anything else: no tutor travels to a house in Madikeri or anywhere in Kodagu. Our tutors visit homes only in Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR. Everywhere else, including this district, teaching happens live on screen, and what actually differs between families is the rhythm rather than the technology.

A standing weekly lesson

One fixed evening each week for a single subject, sometimes two evenings when a student is carrying both a higher level science and a maths course. The same tutor returns each week and keeps a running picture of where the student is.

  • The tutor is chosen for the syllabus your child sits, not for living nearby
  • Works equally for PYP, MYP, DP and IGCSE subjects
  • A shared whiteboard and the actual past papers, open on screen
  • Continuity through the term, which is the whole point of a standing slot

Holiday blocks for boarders

For the many Kodagu students who study in Mysuru, Mangaluru or Bengaluru and come home for Dasara, Puthari and the long summer, we run compressed blocks of three or four lessons a week during those weeks only.

  • Fits the real pattern of a Kodagu boarding household
  • Good for clearing a topic the school rushed before the break
  • Internal assessment drafts get proper attention when school is closed
  • Pauses cleanly when term restarts, with no fee running on

A short push before a session

Four to eight weeks of focused work ahead of the May or November Diploma papers, or the IGCSE June and October to November series, built entirely around past papers, mark schemes and the student's own weak spots.

  • Starts from a diagnostic paper, not from the top of the syllabus
  • Technique and timing worked on as hard as the content
  • Marked against published criteria, with the student watching it being marked
  • Suits a student who has the knowledge but keeps losing marks on execution

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in Madikeri

Every tutor who teaches a Kodagu student is based in India and works to IST, which matters more here than it sounds: we are matching a slot to a household where the school bus, the evening power supply and the monsoon all have a say. We shortlist on the specification your child is entered for, the level and the session, then you meet the person before committing anything.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Madikeri

01

How tuition actually works in Madikeri, and where it runs out

  • Local batches are strong on state-board content and weak on criterion-based assessment
  • No Kodagu centre could be confirmed as teaching an IB or Cambridge specification
  • Boarding students lose continuity for weeks at a time during every holiday
  • Students on online international school rolls have no local teacher at all

Kodagu has a real and functioning tuition culture. Walk along Kohinoor Road or past Convent Junction in the evening and you will find batches running for SSLC Mathematics and Science, II PUC Physics and Chemistry, and shorter courses pointed at NEET and the Karnataka CET. The teachers are often serving or retired school staff, the groups are small, and the results in the state system speak for themselves. For a family inside that system, this is a sensible and affordable way to get a child through a public examination.

The limitation is not quality, it is coverage. A centre that has taught the Karnataka state Physics syllabus for fifteen years has never had to mark a laboratory report against four published criteria, has never set an internal assessment research question, and has never seen a Paper 3 data-based question of the kind the Diploma uses. The same goes for the heavier board-exam coaching that Kodagu students travel to Mysuru or Mangaluru for: it is built for a different examination, with different command terms and a different relationship between teaching and assessment.

What follows from that is uncomfortable but simple. A student on an international syllabus in Madikeri is usually being taught the subject by their school and nothing else, with no second adult who knows the course. If the school is five hours away and the student is at home for a month, there is nobody at all. That absence, not any shortage of effort, is what sends Kodagu parents searching online in the first place.

We do not try to replace a local centre for a state-board child. Where we are genuinely useful is the narrow case the centres cannot serve: a named specification, a named level, a named session. A tutor who has taught Chemistry HL for the November session knows what November candidates typically get wrong, and that knowledge does not exist anywhere within a hundred kilometres of this town.

02

Which schools near Madikeri actually teach IB or IGCSE?

None in Kodagu, as far as we could confirm. No school in Madikeri, Virajpet, Somwarpet, Kushalnagar or Gonikoppal could be verified as offering the IB Diploma, MYP or PYP, or Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel IGCSE. The nearest confirmed options are in Mysuru, around a hundred and twenty kilometres east, and Mangaluru, a hundred and thirty-eight kilometres through the ghat, with the real concentration of IB campuses only in Bengaluru.

That geography is worth sitting with before any decision. Kodagu is one of the Indian districts with no railway line of its own, so every one of those journeys is by road or bus, and the nearest railheads are at Mysuru and across the border in Kerala. Kannur International Airport is about ninety kilometres away and Mangaluru International about a hundred and forty, which means a child boarding in Bengaluru is a longer trip from home than a child boarding in Kerala.

In practice Kodagu families resolve this in one of three ways. Some board a child in Mysuru or Bengaluru from Class 9 and accept the separation. Some stay with CBSE or ICSE locally, which is a perfectly respectable decision, and look at international options only at undergraduate level. And some enrol with an online international school, keeping the child at home on the estate while a registered school somewhere else holds the roll and the examination entry.

All three of those families end up needing the same thing at some point: an adult who knows the specification, available on a weekday evening, without a drive. One caution before you shortlist anything: if a school anywhere in the district advertises itself as an international or Cambridge school, ask for its centre number. Cambridge and the IB both publish their recognised schools, and a school that genuinely holds authorisation will give you that number without hesitation.

State board, CBSE, ICSE, IGCSE and IB: what changes for a Kodagu student

Most Madikeri parents are comparing systems they have not studied themselves, often on the advice of relatives in three different cities. It helps to strip the question down. The Karnataka state board and CBSE both run a single terminal examination with a defined syllabus and a strong link to Indian entrance tests. ICSE sits alongside them with broader language and English demands. IGCSE and the IB Diploma shift a meaningful portion of the final mark into work done during the course and graded against published criteria.

That shift is the real difference, and it cuts both ways. A student who is organised, writes well and can plan a piece of work over several weeks usually thrives on IGCSE and the Diploma. A student who performs best under one concentrated examination, with a syllabus that can be revised exhaustively, may genuinely do better on CBSE or the state board. Neither is a superior system; they reward different habits, and a parent in Madikeri knows their own child's habits better than any page does.

There is also a practical dimension particular to Kodagu. A state-board or CBSE child here has a full local support structure: classmates, tuition centres, teachers who have taught the syllabus for years. An IGCSE or IB child here has almost none of that locally and depends on the school plus whatever the family arranges. That is a real cost of the international route from this district, and it should go into the decision honestly rather than being discovered in Class 11.

Where families do choose IGCSE or the Diploma, the common reasons we hear in Kodagu are specific rather than aspirational. A defence posting means the next school may be in another state or another country. An uncle in Melbourne has advised it. A child already spent four years in a British curriculum school in the Gulf and would lose ground switching back. Those are sound reasons. Prestige alone is not, and we say so.

04

What does IB or IGCSE tuition cost a family in Madikeri?

  • Level, from IGCSE Core up to Diploma higher level, is the single biggest factor
  • Scarce subject and session combinations cost more, especially close to an exam series
  • Frequency, number of subjects and internal assessment supervision all shift the quote
  • A free trial lesson comes first, and the written rate comes before any payment
  • No travel, no fuel and no weekend drive to Mysuru enter the arithmetic at all

We do not publish a price, and the honest reason is that a single figure would mislead you. What we do instead is quote in writing before the first paid lesson, after we know the subject, the level, the session and how often you want to meet. Nothing starts until you have that quote in front of you, and the trial lesson happens before it is relevant at all.

The things that genuinely move the number are worth knowing, because two of them are under your control. Level is the biggest: a higher level Diploma science or Mathematics AA HL needs a tutor with narrower experience than an IGCSE Core subject does, and that scarcity shows up in the rate. Proximity to a session is the second: eight weeks before a May sitting, specialists in the heavy subjects are largely booked, so the same request costs more in February than it does in July.

Frequency and scope matter too. A single weekly hour in one subject sits at one end; three subjects plus internal assessment supervision across two terms sits at the other. Internal assessment and Extended Essay supervision tends to need more tutor time outside the lesson, since reading a draft properly and writing useful feedback takes longer than the conversation about it. Where a student needs a short block rather than a year, we would rather set up the short block.

Against that, set what a Kodagu family currently spends to get the same thing. There is no local alternative to compare with, so the realistic comparison is travel: the fuel and hours to Mysuru and back for a weekend session, or the cost of a child boarding closer to a tutor. Measured that way, an online lesson taken from the house in Madikeri is usually the cheaper arrangement as well as the only workable one.

05

Online tuition, a town batch, a private tutor or self-study: what fits Kodagu?

Put the four options side by side and the Kodagu answer becomes fairly obvious, but it is worth doing properly rather than taking our word for it. A local coaching batch gives you a teacher in the room, low cost and classmates, and no knowledge of your child's specification. A private tutor found locally gives you individual attention and, again, almost no chance of finding anyone who has taught Diploma Chemistry. Self-study with past papers costs nothing and works for a small number of exceptionally self-directed students.

Online one-to-one tuition gives you the one thing the district cannot supply, which is a person who has already taught the exact course, and asks you to accept a screen between tutor and student. In our experience that trade is worth making, and the screen is less of a barrier than parents expect once the student has got used to annotating a shared document while talking. For heavily diagrammatic subjects a cheap graphics tablet makes a noticeable difference.

Two Kodagu-specific caveats belong here. First, connectivity: fibre in Madikeri town and Kushalnagar is generally fine, but on estate roads at Galibeedu or around Bhagamandala the monsoon takes out both power and mobile data, sometimes for hours. We ask those families to keep a mobile hotspot as a fallback and to agree an alternative slot in advance rather than losing the week entirely.

Second, discipline. An online lesson in a bedroom with the door shut works. An online lesson at the dining table while guests arrive for Puthari does not, and Kodagu households have a great many guests. Parents who sort out a fixed corner, a charged laptop and a closed door in the first fortnight get far more out of the arrangement than those who leave it to chance.

06

How do the monsoon, Madikeri Dasara and Puthari fit around exam dates?

Badly, if nobody plans for it, which is why we map the year before setting a timetable. Madikeri takes around 3,210 millimetres of rain in an average year, with the heaviest of it from June to August. That is the stretch when a Diploma Year 2 student should be building internal assessment drafts and when power cuts, fog and the occasional landslide warning make any fixed evening commitment fragile. We front-load work into April and May for exactly this reason.

Then the festival season arrives, and in Kodagu it is dense. Kailpodhu falls in early September. Kaveri Sankramana brings crowds to Bhagamandala and Talakaveri in the middle of October, the same weeks Madikeri Dasara builds towards its night of karagas and mantapas. Puthari, the harvest festival, lands around the full moon in late November or early December, and Kodava households take it seriously. Add the hockey festival in the hotter months and the picking season from November through February, and the calendar is genuinely full.

Line that up against examinations and the pinch points stand out. The IGCSE October to November series and the IB November session both run straight through Dasara and Sankramana. The IGCSE June series and the IB May session sit in the weeks just before the monsoon breaks, which is usually the most workable teaching window of the whole year. February and March are quiet, dry and badly underused by most families.

So our scheduling advice for Kodagu is specific rather than general. Protect February to May for serious content work. Treat June to August as a period when lessons will occasionally need to move, and agree the fallback slot in advance. Expect October and late November to lose sessions to festivals, and plan a lighter load through them rather than pretending a student will study through Puthari. Families who do this stop feeling behind every November.

07

Where do Madikeri students go after Class 12, and does IB or IGCSE help?

  • Equivalence certificates from the Association of Indian Universities take time; begin as soon as results arrive
  • CUET-UG, JEE and NEET accept IB and IGCSE candidates who meet the subject requirements
  • Subject choice in Class 11 quietly decides which Indian entrance tests remain open
  • Karnataka CET eligibility and domicile rules should be checked with the Karnataka Examinations Authority
  • Local options include Field Marshal Cariappa College, the Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences and the Ponnampet colleges

It depends entirely on the destination, and Kodagu students split across more destinations than most districts. Plenty stay close: Field Marshal Cariappa College in Madikeri for degree courses, the Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences for medicine, and the engineering and forestry colleges at Ponnampet in south Kodagu. Others go to Mysuru and Mangaluru for professional courses, Bengaluru for the larger private universities, and a steady number go abroad, often to Australia, the United Kingdom or Canada.

For Indian universities, the mechanism to understand is equivalence. An IB Diploma or a set of IGCSE and A Level results is assessed for equivalence with the Indian Class 12 qualification by the Association of Indian Universities, and institutions ask for that certificate at admission. It is an administrative step rather than an obstacle, but it takes time, and families who leave it until the admission window are the ones who panic. Start it when the results arrive, not when the form is due.

On entrance examinations, IB and IGCSE students are eligible for CUET-UG, JEE and NEET on the same basis as other candidates, provided the subject requirements are met, and that proviso is where attention is needed. NEET needs Physics, Chemistry and Biology; JEE needs Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. A Diploma student who took Biology SL and Environmental Systems rather than Physics has closed a door without noticing. For Karnataka seats through the state CET there are additional eligibility and domicile conditions, and families should check these with the Karnataka Examinations Authority directly rather than relying on hearsay, because Kodagu students are frequently affected by study-location rules after a few years outside the state.

For study abroad the Diploma is straightforwardly useful, since universities in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and Europe read it without conversion, and the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge give an applicant something concrete to write about. The honest summary for a Kodagu family is this: if the plan is Karnataka professional courses through CET, the state board or CBSE is the simpler road. If the plan is abroad, or undecided, the Diploma travels better.

08

IB Mathematics AA and AI and the sciences, taught from a desk in Kodagu

  • Course choice between AA and AI settled before Class 11, not regretted in Class 12
  • Algebraic fluency treated as the foundation of every higher level maths grade
  • The mathematical exploration narrowed to something genuinely answerable
  • Science investigations built from land, water and weather the student can actually access
  • Uncertainties, significant figures and command terms practised until they are automatic

Mathematics is where most of our Kodagu enquiries begin, and the first question is usually whether a student is on the right course. Analysis and Approaches is the proof-heavy, calculus-heavy route; Applications and Interpretation is the modelling and statistics route with the calculator used as a working tool. Neither is easier in practice, but they reward different students, and a child moved into AA HL because it sounds stronger on an application is a child who will struggle for two years.

In AA, the work we do most often is on algebraic fluency, because that is what quietly caps a higher level grade. A student who hesitates over index laws or partial fractions cannot get through a calculus question cleanly, however well they understand calculus. In AI, the attention goes to interpreting output rather than producing it: the calculator will give a regression line, and the marks are in saying what it means and where it fails. The exploration in both courses needs a question narrow enough to answer in two thousand words, and narrowing it is half the job.

For the sciences, the internal assessment is where Kodagu students have an advantage they rarely notice. A scientific investigation needs a controllable variable and a defensible method, and a student living on cultivated land in the Western Ghats has access to soil, water, rainfall and plant material that a student in a city flat does not. We spend the early sessions turning that access into a question with a measurable dependent variable, which is a far better start than borrowing a standard experiment.

Beyond that, science teaching from here is mostly about uncertainty, command terms and paper technique. Uncertainty treatment in Physics loses marks constantly, and it is learnable in a few sessions. Chemistry calculations reward layout as much as method. Biology answers turn on the difference between describe, explain, outline and evaluate, and a student who has been drilled on those four words finds several marks a paper that were previously invisible.

IGCSE Core or Extended, and choosing subjects from a district with no IGCSE school

  • Prepare for Extended and move down if needed, rather than the other way round
  • Core grades cap at C, which affects A Level and Diploma higher level options later
  • Check practical and alternative-to-practical arrangements with the centre before enrolling
  • No Kannada IGCSE exists; Hindi as a Second Language is available to Cambridge candidates
  • Where the series is a choice, June suits the Kodagu calendar better than October to November

The Core and Extended decision is the one Cambridge families get wrong most often, and it matters more than the entry form suggests. Core covers less content and is capped at grade C, which closes some A Level and Diploma higher level doors later. Extended goes further and reaches the top grades. A student entered for Core in Mathematics because Extended looked risky in Class 9 may find, two years on, that Mathematics AA HL is no longer realistic.

Our usual advice is to decide late and prepare as though Extended is the target, because a student prepared for Extended can be moved down safely while the reverse is a scramble. Where a student genuinely cannot carry Extended in a subject, Core is the right call and there is no shame in it; what is worth avoiding is a decision made early, for comfort, and never revisited. We do a diagnostic paper before offering an opinion.

Subject choice carries its own trap for a family in Kodagu, because a student on an online school roll can often pick almost anything, and the practical constraints are invisible. The sciences with practical components need either a school arrangement or the alternative-to-practical route, and that needs checking with the centre before enrolment rather than after. Languages are limited too: there is no Kannada IGCSE, so a child keeping Kannada does it through school or a state-board paper, while Hindi as a Second Language is available to Cambridge candidates.

The last piece is which series to enter. Cambridge runs June and October to November, and Edexcel has its own pattern. For Kodagu students the October to November series collides with Dasara, Sankramana and the start of the picking season, while June sits in the calmer pre-monsoon weeks. If the school allows a choice, that is a real consideration, and it is the kind of local detail nobody tells a parent here until it is too late to act on.

Where we tutor

Madikeri and the Kodagu towns we teach into

Kodagu is not a dense town grid, it is a hill district of ridges, estate roads and small towns an hour apart. Where a family lives changes the realistic lesson time far more than it changes the syllabus, so these notes are about getting a child reliably in front of a screen, awake and online.

Mahadevapet

One of the older residential pockets of Madikeri town, walkable to the market and the schools in the centre. Broadband here is generally dependable, and children are home soon enough after school for a 5.30 pm start.

Chowki and the bus stand area

The busiest part of town, where the KSRTC and private bus stands sit and where most of Kodagu's school and college commuting funnels through. Students arriving by bus from the taluks often reach home late, so we schedule these families later in the evening.

Kohinoor Road and Convent Junction

The stretch where most of Madikeri's coaching activity happens, almost all of it state-syllabus SSLC and II PUC batches. Families here are used to the tuition habit and simply want it pointed at a different syllabus.

Stuart Hill and the Fort side

Up near the old fort, the Omkareshwara temple and Raja's Seat. Quiet, steeply laid out, and prone to thick fog from late afternoon in the wet months, which is one more reason lessons on screen beat travelling anywhere.

Suntikoppa

About sixteen kilometres out on the Mysuru road, a plantation town with its own small schools. Students here often go on to board elsewhere, and the weekly online lesson is what keeps their syllabus continuous through the change.

Galibeedu, Makkandur and Mukkodlu

Estate roads west of town, among the areas worst affected by the landslides of 2018 and 2019. Power and mobile data can drop for hours in heavy rain, so we agree a fallback slot in advance rather than losing the week.

Napoklu and Kakkabe

Towards Tadiandamol, roughly twenty to thirty-five kilometres from Madikeri along narrow roads. A child from here who studies in a city boarding school is only really available for tuition during holidays, and we plan around that.

Bhagamandala and the Talakaveri road

Thirty-six kilometres north-west, where the Kaveri rises and where the Sankramana crowds arrive each October. Among the wettest inhabited parts of the district, which affects both connectivity and attendance in July and August.

Kushalnagar and Bylakuppe

Thirty kilometres east on the Mysuru highway, the district's commercial gateway and home to the large Tibetan settlement. Connectivity here is the most reliable in Kodagu, and families relocating from cities often choose it for exactly that reason.

Somwarpet and Shanivarasanthe

North Kodagu, closer to the Hassan district boundary and the Hassan road. Students here sometimes look north rather than south for schooling, so their syllabus history can be a patchwork we need to map before teaching.

Virajpet, Gonikoppal and Ponnampet

South Kodagu, around thirty to fifty kilometres from Madikeri, with the engineering and forestry colleges at Ponnampet. Several of our Kodagu students are from these towns and attend school in Mysuru or Kerala.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Madikeri

Kodagu district (Madikeri, Virajpet, Somwarpet)

We could not confirm a single school anywhere in Kodagu district offering the IB Diploma, MYP, PYP, Cambridge IGCSE or Pearson Edexcel IGCSE. The district's schools work within the Karnataka state board, CBSE and ICSE, and they do that well. Any parent told otherwise should ask for the school's IB or Cambridge centre number before enrolling, because that is a matter of public record.

    Nearby: Mysuru

One hundred and twenty kilometres east on NH-275, and the city most Kodagu families use for everything from railway connections to hospitals. A small confirmed Cambridge presence in the city, plus a residential school just outside it at Srirangapatna that runs Edexcel and has added Cambridge.

    • I Can International School
    • De Paul International Residential School

    Nearby: Mangaluru

One hundred and thirty-eight kilometres north-west through the Sampaje ghat, a road that is slow in the dry months and sometimes shut in the wet ones. The coastal city has a confirmed cluster of Cambridge IGCSE schools, though no IB campus.

    • The Bharath Academy
    • TLC Cambridge International School
    • The Cambridge International School, Adyar

    Nearby: Bengaluru

The furthest option and the one most Kodagu boarders end up at, because this is where Karnataka's IB World Schools are concentrated. Six hours by road, or a flight from Mangaluru. Families weighing a Diploma place almost always end up comparing campuses here.

    • Stonehill International School
    • Canadian International School, Bengaluru
    • Indus International School, Bengaluru

IB Gram is an independent tuition service. We are not connected to, endorsed by or acting for the International Baccalaureate Organization, Cambridge Assessment International Education, Pearson Edexcel, or any school named anywhere on this page. Schools are listed only so Kodagu parents can see where these programmes are genuinely taught, and every one of them should be contacted directly about admissions, fees and the subjects it actually runs in a given year.

    How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

    1. 01

Tell us the specification, not just the subject

Message us on WhatsApp at +91 7439 368 115 or write to support@ibgram.com with the programme, the subject, the level and the session: Chemistry HL for November, or Cambridge IGCSE Extended Mathematics for June. That one line saves a week of back and forth.

    2. 02

A short conversation about the student

Ten minutes, usually on WhatsApp, about where the student actually is: the school they attend or the online roll they are on, what the last report said, which topics they avoid, and when in a Madikeri evening they are genuinely awake and free.

    3. 03

      A free trial lesson

We shortlist a tutor who has taught that exact course and set up one lesson at no cost. Your child meets the person, works on something real, and you see how the session runs before any money or rate is discussed.

    4. 04

The rate in writing, then a fixed slot

If the trial went well, we confirm the rate in writing and lock a weekly slot in IST. For families on estate roads at Galibeedu or Bhagamandala we also agree a fallback time now, so a monsoon power cut costs you a reschedule rather than a lesson.

    5. 05

Lessons, notes and a change of tutor if needed

Teaching starts, and a written note reaches you after each session saying what was covered and what was set. If the fit is wrong at any point, say so and we move your child to a different tutor without argument and without a fee for the change.

    Why families choose us

What Madikeri parents tell us matters most

We match the tutor to the syllabus, not to the map

Nobody in Kodagu could be confirmed as teaching an IB or Cambridge course, so looking locally is not a strategy. We shortlist on the specification, the level and the session, which means the person your child meets has taught that course before.

Honest about how lessons reach you

Teaching for Madikeri families happens online. Tutors visit homes only in Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR, and we say that at the start rather than letting you find out after booking.

    Built around the Kodagu evening

Slots are set in IST and placed after the hill-route buses have finished, with a fallback time agreed in advance for the weeks when rain takes out the power or the data link on an estate road.

    Holidays treated as teaching time

Most international-syllabus students from this district board outside it. We run compressed blocks through Dasara, Puthari and the summer, so the weeks at home move the student forward instead of leaving a gap.

Coaching on coursework, never writing it

Tutors help a student narrow an internal assessment question, read a draft and explain what a criterion is asking for. They do not write any part of an IA, Extended Essay, TOK essay or coursework, and we will not be talked into it.

    Nothing hidden before you decide

A free trial lesson comes first, the rate is confirmed in writing before the first paid session, a written note follows every lesson, and you can change tutor at no cost if the match is wrong.

    Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Madikeri: your questions answered

Do you have IB and IGCSE tutors in Madikeri who come to the house?+

No. Our tutors do not visit homes in Madikeri or anywhere in Kodagu; home visits run only in Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR. What we offer here is private one-to-one tuition taken from home online, which is why people searching for IB and IGCSE tutors in Madikeri still find us useful. The student sits at their own desk with a laptop, the tutor shares a whiteboard and the past papers, and the lesson is individual rather than a recorded class.

Is there any IB or IGCSE school in Madikeri or Kodagu?+

We could not confirm one. No school in Madikeri, Virajpet, Somwarpet, Kushalnagar or Gonikoppal could be verified as running the IB Diploma, MYP, PYP or Cambridge or Edexcel IGCSE. The district's schools work within the Karnataka state board, CBSE and ICSE. The nearest confirmed Cambridge schools are in Mysuru and Mangaluru, and Karnataka's IB campuses are concentrated in Bengaluru. If a school here describes itself as international, ask for its Cambridge or IB centre number before you enrol.

My child boards in Bengaluru and is only home in the holidays. Can that work?+

Yes, and it is the most common arrangement we run for Kodagu. We set up compressed blocks of three or four lessons a week during the weeks the student is home for Dasara, Puthari or the summer, then pause cleanly when term restarts with no fee continuing. Those blocks are usually spent on whatever the school moved through quickly and on internal assessment drafts, which get far better attention when there is no timetable competing for the student's day.

What does IB tuition cost for a family in Madikeri?+

We do not publish a rate because a single figure would mislead you, but we confirm one in writing before any paid lesson. What moves it is the level, with a Diploma higher level science costing more than an IGCSE Core subject, how close you are to a May or November session, how many subjects you want, how often you meet, and whether internal assessment supervision is included. The trial lesson is free and happens before the rate matters at all.

How reliable are online lessons during the Kodagu monsoon?+

In Madikeri town and Kushalnagar, generally reliable. On estate roads at Galibeedu, Makkandur or around Bhagamandala, the July and August rain does take out power and mobile data, sometimes for hours. We handle it by agreeing a fallback slot when you book, asking families in those areas to keep a mobile hotspot charged, and front-loading serious content work into February to May while conditions are steady. A missed evening becomes a reschedule rather than a lost week.

Which IB subjects do you cover for students here?+

Mathematics Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Systems and Societies, Economics, Business Management, Computer Science, Geography, Psychology, English A Language and Literature, English B, Hindi B, and Kannada A where a school permits it as a self-taught standard level course. We also supervise Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay. Tell us the level and the session and we match a tutor who has taught that combination before.

Do you teach both Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE?+

Yes, both, and we ask which one your child is entered for before the first lesson because the specifications, paper structures and grade boundaries differ. Mysuru's nearest residential option runs Edexcel while Mangaluru's confirmed schools run Cambridge, so Kodagu families genuinely do arrive with either. Tutors work from the actual specification and the real past papers for that board, not from a generic IGCSE syllabus.

Will a tutor write my child's Internal Assessment or Extended Essay?+

No, and we decline that request every time it is made. Tutors coach the process: narrowing a research question until it can be answered, choosing a method that produces usable data, reading a draft and explaining what a criterion is actually asking for. Every word that goes to the examiner is the student's own. The IB treats authorship seriously, and so do we, because a student caught here loses far more than a grade.

Can you prepare a Kodagu student for the November IB session?+

Yes. Both sessions are covered, and the November one needs more planning from here because it runs through Madikeri Dasara, Kaveri Sankramana and the start of the picking season. We do the technique and timing work in September, keep October lighter around the festivals, and aim to have the student working on timed papers rather than new content by the time the examinations arrive. November candidates also have specific patterns of question that we prepare for directly.

My child has been in CBSE in Madikeri and is moving to IGCSE. How big is the jump?+

The content jump is usually modest; the assessment jump is real. A CBSE student is used to a defined syllabus and a terminal paper, while IGCSE asks for extended written responses, data interpretation and, in several subjects, coursework or an alternative-to-practical paper. We spend the first few sessions on command terms and what each paper actually rewards, which is where transferring students lose marks despite knowing the material perfectly well.

Are IB and IGCSE qualifications accepted by Indian universities?+

Yes, through the equivalence route. The Association of Indian Universities assesses an IB Diploma or an IGCSE and A Level combination for equivalence with the Indian Class 12 qualification, and universities ask for that certificate at admission. Begin the process as soon as results arrive rather than when the admission form is due. For Karnataka seats through the state CET there are further eligibility and study-location conditions, which you should confirm with the Karnataka Examinations Authority directly.

Can an IB student from Kodagu still sit NEET or JEE?+

Yes, provided the subject requirements are met, and that is the part to watch in Class 11. NEET needs Physics, Chemistry and Biology; JEE needs Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. A Diploma student who chose Biology and Environmental Systems instead of Physics has closed the JEE door without realising. Several Kodagu students aim at the medical college in Madikeri or at courses in Mysuru, so we check the subject combination against the intended entrance test early.

What happens in the free trial lesson?+

It is a real lesson, not a sales call. The tutor works with your child on something from the current topic, usually a past-paper question, and you can see how the explanation lands. Afterwards we ask for your honest reaction and your child's, and if either of you is unconvinced we shortlist someone else or leave it there. Nothing is charged for the trial and no rate is discussed until you have had it.

Which localities around Madikeri do you teach into?+

All of them, because the lesson arrives on screen. We teach students in Mahadevapet, around Chowki and the bus stand, along Kohinoor Road and Convent Junction, up at Stuart Hill and the fort side, and out at Suntikoppa, Galibeedu, Napoklu, Kakkabe, Bhagamandala, Kushalnagar, Somwarpet, Virajpet, Gonikoppal and Ponnampet. The only practical difference between those places is the slot we pick, which depends on bus timings, school hours and how steady the connection is.

Can you teach a child on an online international school roll?+

Yes, and a fair number of our Kodagu students are exactly that: enrolled with a registered school elsewhere that holds the examination entry while the child studies from the family's house here. Those students have no local teacher at all, so the weekly lesson carries more weight than it would for a child in a classroom. We work from the school's own scheme of work where they share it, and from the published specification otherwise.

How do we start, and what do you need from us?+

Send a WhatsApp message to +91 7439 368 115 or an email to support@ibgram.com naming the programme, the subject, the level and the session. If you can add the school or online provider, the last report and two or three evening times that work in your household, we can usually offer a trial slot quickly. After the trial you get the rate in writing, and the weekly slot is fixed from there.

Why should we choose online tuition over a coaching centre in town?+

Because the two are built for different examinations. Madikeri's centres are genuinely good at SSLC, II PUC, NEET and CET work, and if your child is in the state system you should use them. None of them could be confirmed as teaching an IB or Cambridge specification, so for a Diploma or IGCSE student the room is the wrong room. Online tuition gives you a tutor who has taught that precise course, which is not available within a hundred kilometres of here.

    Flag of Madikeri

Start with one free lesson from your own desk in Madikeri

Kodagu asks its students to do something slightly unfair: follow an international syllabus with no school in the district teaching it and no tuition centre that has seen the papers. The way around that is not to move or to settle, it is to put the right specialist on screen one evening a week. Send us the programme, the subject, the level and the session on WhatsApp at +91 7439 368 115 or by email to support@ibgram.com, and we will shortlist a tutor who has taught exactly that and set up one lesson free. You will see how it goes before the rate is even mentioned, and if the person is not right for your child, we find another.
