IB & IGCSE in Lilong

IB and IGCSE help for Lilong families

Lilong sits in Thoubal district at the junction of the Imphal and Iril rivers, with the Waithou Ching hill to its south and National Highway 102, also Asian Highway 1, running through to Imphal and on towards Moreh. About 28,700 people lived there at the 2011 census. It is one of the long-established settlements of the Meitei Pangal community, and vegetable farming and rice cultivation, much of it around the Ngangou Loukon lake, shape the local economy. The Lilong Turel Ahanbi canal, dug in 1880, is a reminder of how old the valley's water management is.

Education here runs through the Manipur boards, BOSEM and COHSEM, and through CBSE and other English-medium schools in the Imphal valley. So a parent searching for IB and IGCSE tutors in Lilong is almost always planning something beyond the valley: a school in Guwahati, Kolkata or Delhi, an online international school, or relatives' plans to study abroad. The tutoring need is specific, and there is no IB teacher down the road.

We could not confirm any school in Lilong, Thoubal or Imphal offering the IB or a Cambridge or Edexcel IGCSE, and we name none. We provide online home tuition instead: a private specialist, live on video, to the child at home. Tutors never visit Lilong, because in-person lessons are limited to Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR.

IB Gram is independent. It has no link to the IB, Cambridge, Pearson or any school, and its tutors coach without ever writing a student's Internal Assessment, Extended Essay, TOK essay or coursework.

At a glance

  • IB at all four stages and both main IGCSE boards

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to Lilong school years

A Lilong child is likely to take the IB or IGCSE at a school several hundred kilometres away, so understanding each stage early matters. The notes below describe what each programme asks and what a student from a Manipur-board primary often finds new.

PYPNursery-Class 5, ages 3-12

IB Primary Years Programme

Children investigate big ideas through projects spread across several weeks and close the programme with an Exhibition. At home the tutor's role is modest: reading together, number games, and inviting a child to give reasons.

A child who speaks Meiteilon at home and meets English mainly at school gains from relaxed spoken English several times a week.

MYPClass 6-10, ages 11-16

IB Middle Years Programme

Four criteria apply in every subject and teachers connect learning to real contexts. The Personal Project, a long self-directed task, completes the programme.

Students from BOSEM or COHSEM schools are usually good at recall and need coaching to explain a point with evidence in their own words.

DPClass 11-12, ages 16-19

IB Diploma Programme

Three Higher Level and three Standard Level subjects join Theory of Knowledge, an Extended Essay and CAS. Internal assessments carried out across the two years add to the May or November papers.

Enquiries from the Imphal valley mostly cover Maths, Physics, Chemistry and English A, usually for a student who has moved to a school outside Manipur.

CPClass 11-12, ages 16-19

IB Career-related Programme

A mix of Diploma subjects, a career-related course and a reflective project. Few Indian schools offer it.

We seldom hear of CP from Manipur; where it arises, support goes to the Diploma subjects inside the student's combination.

Subject coverage

IB subjects we tutor

A Manipur-board exam normally rewards the student who recalls a whole chapter accurately. An IB or IGCSE examiner rewards the one who answers exactly what the command word asked. The subject notes below show where our tutors usually concentrate for Lilong students.

IB Maths Analysis & Approaches

HL / SL

Calculus, functions, vectors and written proof. Quick Board-style calculation is a good start; the extra step is explaining each move in clear lines of working.

IB Maths Applications & Interpretation

HL / SL

Statistics and modelling with a graphing calculator in constant use, fitting students bound for economics, commerce or design.

IB Physics

HL / SL

Mechanics, waves, electricity and fields, with careful units and a data booklet used quickly.

IB Chemistry

HL / SL

Moles and bonding are familiar territory; equilibrium and organic reactions bring reasoning-heavy questions.

IB Biology

HL / SL

Cells, genetics, ecology and physiology; rice-paddy and wetland ecology around Ngangou Loukon offer vivid local examples.

IB Economics

HL / SL

Diagrams and current-affairs commentary; border trade along the Asian Highway and valley vegetable markets give ready material.

IB Business Management

HL / SL

Case-study papers and a project on a real organisation, which for many Lilong students means a family trading or farming enterprise.

IB English A Language & Literature

HL / SL

Close reading and essays plus an oral; students who think in Meiteilon benefit from practice in organising English paragraphs.

IB Computer Science

HL / SL

Programming, algorithms and a documented internal solution.

IB Environmental Systems & Societies

SL / HL

River systems, wetlands and rice agriculture make this subject locally rooted; two rivers meet beside Lilong.

IB Geography

HL / SL

Hazards, rivers, population and a fieldwork-based internal assessment.

IB History

HL / SL

Source analysis and sustained essays; Manipur's regional history can inform case-study choices.

IB Hindi B and English B

HL / SL

Language courses where oral practice and text-type conventions decide the marks.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

DP Core

Conversation-led coaching on knowledge claims and the exhibition; the student writes every word.

IGCSE coverage

IGCSE subjects we tutor

IGCSE comes from two boards in India, Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel, and they differ in paper design and dates. Cambridge offers February-March, May-June and October-November sittings; Edexcel offers January, May-June and November. A student entering privately from Lilong needs a recognised centre, and the nearest may lie in Guwahati or Kolkata, so enquire early.

IGCSE Mathematics 0580

Core / Extended

Extended leads to the top grades, and the commonest loss is unwritten working.

IGCSE Additional Mathematics 0606

Grade 10

Brings calculus and trigonometric identities forward, easing the move to IB Maths AA.

Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics A 4MA1

Foundation / Higher

Edexcel questions are phrased in their own way, so its papers drive the practice.

IGCSE Physics 0625

Core / Extended

Formula rearrangement, graph reading and the paper that replaces the practical.

IGCSE Chemistry 0620

Core / Extended

Mole sums, reaction rates, organic basics and the ion-identification tables.

IGCSE Biology 0610

Core / Extended

Inheritance, transport in living things and human systems, with long answers needing order.

IGCSE Economics 0455

Grade 9-10

Markets, policy and development with data questions.

IGCSE Computer Science 0478

Grade 9-10

Pseudocode, logic and Python.

IGCSE Business Studies 0450

Grade 9-10

Applying theory to a named firm and doing short finance calculations.

IGCSE English as a Second Language 0510

Grade 9-10

Reading, writing, listening and speaking for students whose home language is Meiteilon.

IGCSE Hindi as a Second Language 0549

Grade 9-10

A compact language paper where technique pays quickly.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around Lilong school timetables

In Lilong everything takes place by video: one tutor, one student, a lesson held at home. No tutor travels to the town. What changes from one family to the next is how the weeks are shaped.

A standing weekly slot

The same tutor at the same evening hour each week, with work set between meetings. It suits a student already on an international course who needs one subject lifted.

  • A consistent tutor all term
  • Course and level fixed beforehand
  • Marked past papers every week
  • Timed before dark and before the evening power dips

Bridge before changing schools

A short run of lessons before a student leaves the Manipur boards for an IB or IGCSE school, covering English for study, command words and subject gaps.

  • English for academic writing
  • Command-word drills
  • Gap repair in the weakest subject
  • A written summary of next steps

Exam-season push

A denser timetable before mocks and the May or November sitting, built on timed papers and the published mark schemes.

  • Two to four lessons a week
  • Marked against official criteria
  • Targeted written feedback
  • Booked ahead of the monsoon and festival weeks

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Lilong

01

Schooling in the valley and the gap IB and IGCSE would fill

  • No confirmed IB or IGCSE school in Lilong, Thoubal or Imphal
  • Boarding outside the state or online enrolment are the usual routes
  • Families: overseas workers, traders and farmers, teachers and officials
  • Support is private tuition by video

Lilong families live in a densely schooled valley. Manipur has strong local traditions of education, with its own boards (BOSEM for Class 10 and COHSEM for Class 12), many CBSE-affiliated English-medium schools, and long-standing colleges in Imphal and Thoubal. Manipur University and the National Institute of Technology Manipur are in the Imphal area, and the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences draws medical aspirants. Students from Lilong therefore have excellent routes into Indian higher education.

What the valley does not appear to offer is a school running the IB or a Cambridge or Edexcel IGCSE. We looked for listings in Imphal and found none, and we will not guess. Parents who want the IB usually think of boarding in Guwahati, Kolkata or the Delhi region, or enrolling in an online international school and staying in Lilong.

The households who ask are mixed. Some have members working in the Gulf, the UK or elsewhere abroad. Some run vegetable or trading businesses along the Asian Highway. Others are teachers, doctors and civil servants who expect transfers. For each, the challenge is the same: a child must be ready for a style of study that a valley classroom does not teach.

That readiness is what our tutoring supplies. We match a tutor to the course and level, teach online at home and say clearly that tutors do not visit Lilong.

02

How do IB and IGCSE differ from BOSEM, COHSEM and CBSE?

The big difference is what earns marks. BOSEM, COHSEM and CBSE papers give most marks for correct content set out as the textbook sets it out. IB and IGCSE papers give marks for using content: comparing two data sets, judging a source, planning an experiment, defending a view.

The second difference is pacing. Internal assessments, coursework and practical papers mean effort is spread over two years, not concentrated before one March examination. Students used to a final push must build a steadier rhythm.

The third is writing. Many Lilong students are multilingual, comfortable in Meiteilon, Hindi and English, but long English essays are an unfamiliar form. Tutors teach the shape of a good paragraph and a bank of subject terms.

None of this makes the international route harder across the board. Many students find criteria-based marking more transparent once the criteria are clear, and families who hear the differences early adapt well.

03

What should a Lilong family expect to pay for IB or IGCSE tuition?

A published price would mislead, so we do not print one. Cost depends on programme, level, subject, tutor and the number of lessons per week, and a written quotation follows the free trial.

Level has the biggest effect: Diploma Higher Level sciences need much more preparation than Primary Years reading support. Tutor seniority comes next, then how many lessons you book, then the season, since diaries fill before May and November.

For Lilong there is a saving that does not show on a price list. Nobody pays for a trip to Imphal for a class, and no afternoon is lost on the highway. The fee covers teaching and nothing else.

Before you commit, ask how a tutor can be changed and what written feedback you receive. Those terms are worth as much as the hourly rate.

04

Online tuition, Imphal coaching, local tutors or self-study in Lilong?

A Lilong family can weigh four options. Coaching in Imphal is plentiful but aimed at Board exams, NEET and JEE. Local tutors know the child but generally not the international syllabus. Self-study with past papers works for an organised learner, though uncorrected errors can persist. Online one-to-one tuition puts a specialist in front of the child.

Connectivity needs honesty. Broadband and mobile data are workable in the valley but weaker on the hill side, and heavy rain can cut power. We ask families to keep a hotspot and charged devices ready, and a tutor can finish a lesson by audio if the video fails.

The missing piece at home is classmates on the same course. We suggest short group sessions or a study partner once the routine is settled.

The comparison below sets the four options side by side.

Rains, Eid, Ningol Chakouba and exams: the Lilong year

The Manipur valley receives heavy rain from May to September, which swells the Imphal and Iril rivers and brings power cuts. Online lessons cope better than travel, but a family should have a backup connection and plan lighter weeks during the heaviest spells.

The community calendar matters for scheduling. In a town with a large Meitei Pangal population, the Ramadan month shapes evenings, with lessons placed after iftar or paused at the family's request, and Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha are family days. Across the valley, Ningol Chakouba in November, Cheiraoba in April, Yaoshang in March and Christmas bring other holidays.

Winter in the north-east brings early sunsets, with dusk by about four-thirty in December, so evening slots are planned for warmth and light as well as for school timings. Harvest of rice in the late autumn and vegetable seasons keep farm families busy.

Exam sittings cross all of this: the IB and IGCSE both have windows around May and November. A November candidate should finish heavy revision by early October, before Ningol Chakouba and the colder months.

06

Where can IB and IGCSE take a student from Lilong?

At home, the Association of Indian Universities treats the IB Diploma as equal to the Class 12 qualification, so applications to most universities are possible, and CUET-UG is the entrance route for many central universities. IGCSE students typically go on to AS and A Level or the Diploma first.

In the north-east, Manipur University, NIT Manipur, RIMS in Imphal, Dhanamanjuri University and Central Agricultural University are close, and NEHU in Shillong and Gauhati University are within the region. Each treats foreign boards in its own way, so read the current admission notice before choosing HL subjects.

For engineering and medicine, JEE Main and NEET set special conditions for IB and IGCSE candidates. Check them in Class 10 to avoid surprises later.

Overseas, universities in Britain, Canada, Australia, the US and Singapore read IB and IGCSE results directly. Tutors help raise subject grades and do not write applications.

07

IB Maths and the sciences for Lilong students

IB Maths offers two courses. Analysis and Approaches is for students who love algebra and calculus and may head to engineering or pure science. Applications and Interpretation is for those who prefer data and modelling and may choose economics, commerce or design. One diagnostic lesson often shows the right fit.

The Maths exploration carries a fifth of the grade and works best on something the student knows. In Lilong, topics such as river-level readings at the Lilong Bridge, rice yields around Ngangou Loukon or the geometry of the old canal give honest mathematical material.

In the sciences, Board-trained students know the facts but not the answer style. Tutors drill short, exact responses that name a principle, apply it and conclude.

Environmental Systems and Biology offer rich local investigations on wetlands and rivers, but the work must be the student's. A tutor may ask questions and check the criteria; the writing and data are the student's alone.

08

Choosing IGCSE tiers, boards and subjects from Lilong

  • Aim for Extended if IB HL or A Level sciences are planned
  • Confirm the board before starting
  • Additional Mathematics is a strong bridge to IB Maths AA
  • Book an exam centre early as a private candidate

IGCSE is studied in Grades 9 and 10, usually with five to eight subjects built around English, Maths and sciences.

In tiered subjects, Core caps the top grade, so a student who wants IB Higher Level or A Level sciences should enter Extended.

Cambridge and Edexcel differ in layout and dates, so confirm the board with the school first and use its past papers throughout.

Private candidates must reserve an exam centre early, since the nearest may be in Guwahati or Kolkata.

Where we tutor

Lilong and the valley around it

Teaching is done on a screen, so geography does not change a lesson. It affects timing: which road a family takes to Imphal, when the rivers run high, and when a religious or community festival fills the evening.

Lilong town

The old settlement of about 28,700 people, built at the meeting of two rivers and famous as a major Meitei Pangal community centre.

Lilong Bridge over the Imphal River

A landmark crossing on the highway; traffic here affects the trip north to Imphal.

Lilong Turel Ahanbi canal

A canal dug in 1880 in Maharaja Chandrakirti Singh's reign, still part of the local landscape.

Ngangou Loukon lake fields

Rice and vegetable land around the lake; monsoon water levels matter to farm families.

Iril River bank

The north-eastern edge of the town; rains raise the river and can slow movement.

Waithou Ching hill side

The rising ground south of the town, with scattered settlements and weaker mobile coverage.

National Highway 102 north to Imphal

About 30 km to the capital, where hospitals, colleges and exam centres are concentrated.

Highway south to Thoubal, Pallel and Moreh

The Asian Highway 1 corridor, busy with trucks and cross-border trade.

Imphal valley markets

The weekly and daily markets on which vegetable growers depend for income.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Lilong

Lilong itself

Local options are limited. Schools in and around Lilong follow BOSEM, COHSEM or CBSE, and none is confirmed to offer IB or IGCSE.

    Nearby: Imphal

The state capital, about 30 km north. We could not confirm an IB or IGCSE school there, so none is listed.

      Nearby: Guwahati

The largest city in the region, reached by air or a long road journey, with a Cambridge-affiliated school.

      • International School Guwahati

      Nearby: Kolkata

A further step east-to-west by air, and a familiar boarding destination for north-eastern families.

      • Calcutta International School, Kolkata

We have no confirmed IB or IGCSE school in Lilong, Thoubal or Imphal, and none is named as local. The Guwahati and Kolkata schools below are mentioned because Manipur families sometimes research them for boarding; verify every detail directly. IB Gram is an independent tutoring service with no agreement with these schools, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson.

      Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Lilong: your questions answered

Can a student in Lilong study with an IB tutor at all?+

Yes, over a live video link. The tutor is picked for the subject and level and teaches one child at a time. Because in-person visits exist only in Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR, nobody comes to Lilong; the lesson reaches the house on a laptop screen. A quiet corner and a dependable connection are the only requirements.

Is any school in Lilong or Imphal teaching the IB or IGCSE?+

We found none to confirm. Schools in the valley follow BOSEM, COHSEM or CBSE. The IB and IGCSE options families research are mostly outside Manipur, in cities such as Guwahati, Kolkata and the Delhi region. Always check programmes and admissions with the school itself.

Do tutors visit the house in Lilong?+

No. House visits operate in Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR only. For Lilong, home tuition means a private lesson that the child attends from home on a laptop, which delivers the individual attention without anyone making the trip.

      How is the price decided?+

Programme, level, subject, tutor seniority and the number of lessons each shape it. No tariff is printed. After the trial you receive a written quote listing the hourly rate, the weekly plan and the first review date.

Our son will board in Guwahati or Kolkata next year. What can we do now?+

A short bridging course can strengthen English for study, explain command words and repair a weak subject, and can follow the school's entrance test if it sets one. Share the school and class and we plan backwards from the joining date.

      Which IB subjects are taught?+

Maths in either form at HL and SL, the sciences, Economics, Business Management, English A, Computer Science, Environmental Systems and Societies, Geography, History, Hindi and TOK coaching. For others, send the subject code and we will tell you plainly if we cannot help.

      Are both IGCSE boards covered?+

Yes, Cambridge and Edexcel, in Maths, Additional Maths, the sciences, Economics, Business Studies, Computer Science and English. Each board words and marks differently, so we practise on the papers of the board your child will sit.

What happens in the free trial lesson?+

A tutor teaches a short real topic from the current course while you watch. No fee is mentioned until afterwards, and if the style does not suit your child, we suggest another tutor without charge.

Will a tutor help write an Internal Assessment?+

No. A tutor can explain what the criteria reward, ask questions that sharpen a plan and respond to a draft the student wrote. The ideas, data and sentences must belong to the student, as IB and Cambridge rules require.

What about power cuts and heavy rain?+

The monsoon from May to September can cut electricity and slow the connection. We ask for a backup hotspot and charged devices, run lighter schedules in the worst weeks, and continue by audio with a shared document if video fails.

How do Ramadan and festival weeks affect lessons?+

We plan around them. During Ramadan, lessons can be set after iftar or paused if the family prefers, and Eid, Ningol Chakouba, Yaoshang and Christmas are treated as family days. Tell us your dates early and we set the calendar.

Can a student from a Manipur board school move to IB?+

Yes. A bridging course covers English for study, command words and subject gaps, so that the first term at the new school feels like a continuation.

Do you teach younger children too?+

Yes. In PYP the work is reading, number play and explaining ideas. In MYP it turns to criteria and the Personal Project. Starting early makes the Diploma years calmer.

Where can IB or IGCSE results lead from Lilong?+

Indian universities generally recognise the Diploma as equal to Class 12 through the Association of Indian Universities, and CUET-UG applies to central universities. JEE and NEET have separate conditions. Abroad, universities in Britain, Canada, Australia and the US accept both qualifications.

      How are tutors selected?+

By qualifications, by recent teaching in the exact programme and by a sample lesson. Tutors live in India and teach in Indian Standard Time. A poor fit is replaced.

Is IB Gram part of a school or board?+

No. It is an independent service with no agreement with the IB, Cambridge, Pearson or any school. Schools named on this page are simply places families may research.

      How do we get started?+

Email support@ibgram.com or message +91 7439 368 115 on WhatsApp with the school, board, subject, level and exam sitting. A tutor suggestion and trial times usually come back within a working day.
