IB & IGCSE in Kalimpong

An old Himalayan trading ridge with a missionary school tradition and no IB campus

Kalimpong sits on a ridge at about 1,247 metres, between Deolo Hill and Durpin Hill, with the Teesta far below on the Sikkim side. For generations it was the gateway through which wool, furs and grain from Tibet reached Indian markets by way of the Jelep La and Nathu La passes. Today its trade is flowers, cacti, cheese and visitors, and since 2017 it has been the headquarters of a district of its own.

Its schools carry a missionary lineage. The Scottish Universities Mission Institution opened in 1886, and Dr Graham's Homes followed in 1900. School directories list Dr Graham's Homes, St Augustine's School, St Joseph's Convent and Rockvale Academy, all as ICSE schools, and we found no IB World School or Cambridge or Edexcel exam centre within Kalimpong. Families who want either credential tend to add it around an ICSE, CBSE or West Bengal board education, or to plan a move elsewhere.

Online tutoring fills that gap. Lessons are live, private and fixed to a weekly slot, which is what most parents mean when they search for home tuition in Kalimpong, but nobody travels: our tutors teach from elsewhere in India, and in-person visits run only in Gurugram and some areas of Delhi NCR. On a hillside where one landslide can close a road for a day, a lesson that depends on a connection, not a journey, is often the dependable choice.

What tutors do is coach. They will explain a criterion, pick apart a mark scheme and mark practice answers, but they never draft an IA, an Extended Essay, a TOK essay or any coursework. IB Gram is an independent service, tied to no school, board or exam body named here, and the school names on this page are context only.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to Kalimpong school years

Kalimpong students meet the IB from several directions: a boarder finishing ICSE, a day scholar curious about a wider syllabus, or a family planning a move. Each stage is described below through the help a hill student usually needs.

PYPNursery to Class 5, about ages 3 to 11

IB Primary Years Programme

Young learners work through themed units of inquiry that cross subject lines, and the final year brings the Exhibition, a shared investigation presented to the school community.

A Kalimpong child may speak Nepali, Hindi, Bengali, Lepcha or Tibetan at home and meet English mainly at school, so PYP tutoring stresses spoken English, reading aloud and the confidence to ask why.

MYPClasses 6 to 10, about ages 11 to 16

IB Middle Years Programme

Teachers assess against published criteria in eight subject groups, and students finish with a Personal Project, a long piece of independent work supported by a process journal.

Students from ICSE classrooms write fluently but are sometimes new to criterion-referenced marking, so a tutor walks through sample responses at each achievement level.

DPClasses 11 and 12, about ages 16 to 19

IB Diploma Programme

Six courses are chosen across the subject groups, three or four of them taken at Higher Level, while a core of essay, reflection and service work runs alongside. Examinations take place in May or November.

A student who finishes ICSE and wants the Diploma meets a real jump in independent writing and investigation, so bridging from Class 10 makes the first term calmer.

CPClasses 11 and 12, about ages 16 to 19

IB Career-related Programme

CP blends two or three Diploma courses with a vocational pathway chosen by the school, plus a reflective project and language development.

Tourism, horticulture and dairy are real local careers, but CP is rare in India and we know of no school offering it near Kalimpong, so we include it for families who meet it elsewhere and want help with the academic courses.

Subject coverage

IB subjects we tutor

Below are the IB courses that Kalimpong families ask about. Each tutor is selected for command of the subject and for having taught students who study without a specialist classroom nearby.

IB Maths Analysis & Approaches

HL / SL

Algebra, calculus, vectors and proof, with attention to the written working that earns method marks and a hunt for an Exploration topic in the student's own surroundings.

IB Maths Applications & Interpretation

HL / SL

Statistics, probability, modelling and finance with technology, a practical route for future hospitality, geography or economics students.

IB Physics

HL / SL

Mechanics, thermal physics, waves, electricity and fields, plus the data-booklet and write-up habits that matter when no laboratory is nearby.

IB Chemistry

HL / SL

Quantitative chemistry, bonding, kinetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms, with practical method explained step by step on video.

IB Biology

HL / SL

Cell biology, genetics, physiology and ecology, using orchid houses, cactus nurseries and forest edges around Kalimpong as sources of investigation ideas.

IB Environmental Systems & Societies

SL

Slope stability, water supply, biodiversity and land use examined through Himalayan examples a student can see from the window.

IB Geography

HL / SL

Hazards and disaster risk, with monsoon landslides and river erosion as grounded case studies and fieldwork-style question practice.

IB Economics

HL / SL

Market diagrams, trade and sustainability, with tourism, dairy and the flower trade supplying examples for internal commentaries.

IB Business Management

HL / SL

Reading a business case with confidence, and a research project on a real hotel, nursery or cheese maker that the student can observe at first hand.

IB English A Language & Literature

HL / SL

Commentary on unseen passages, comparison of literary works and rehearsal of the oral, for students who move between several languages in a single day.

IB Nepali A Literature

SL

Reading set works closely and writing literary analysis in Nepali, for a student whose home language deserves an examined place in the Diploma.

IB Hindi B

SL / HL

Reading, writing, listening and speaking in Hindi at the pace the language acquisition course expects.

IB History

HL / SL

Source evaluation and essay structure, with practice on building an argument instead of memorising a narrative.

IB Psychology

HL / SL

How brains, thinking and cultures shape behaviour, and how to cite a study accurately inside a tightly timed essay.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

DP Core

Making sense of the prescribed titles, picking objects to display in the exhibition and mapping out an essay that only the student may write.

Extended Essay (EE)

DP Core

Shaping a question narrow enough to answer, with feedback on planning and structure; the essay itself stays the student's own.

IGCSE coverage

IGCSE subjects we tutor

IGCSE is normally studied beside an ICSE or West Bengal board course in the hills, so the plan must respect an already full week. Tutors are matched on board, syllabus code and tier, and we ask each one about experience with students who prepare without a Cambridge or Edexcel school.

IGCSE Mathematics 0580

Core / Extended

Algebra, geometry and number work with non-calculator accuracy, and Extended-tier stretch for those heading towards the IB.

IGCSE Additional Mathematics 0606

Classes 9-10

Functions, differentiation, logarithms and trigonometry, a demanding preparation for IB Maths at Higher Level.

Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A 4MA1

Foundation / Higher

Questions and mark schemes in the Pearson style, practised separately so the two boards stay distinct in the student's mind.

IGCSE Physics 0625

Core / Extended

Energy, motion, circuits and waves, with paper-six style practical questions rehearsed using household objects.

IGCSE Chemistry 0620

Core / Extended

Atoms and bonding, speed of reaction, acids and salts and organic chemistry, with salt and gas tests shown on video.

IGCSE Biology 0610

Core / Extended

Cells, inheritance, nutrition and ecosystems, with graph work and structured writing built up over time.

IGCSE Combined Science 0653

Classes 9-10

All three sciences inside a single course, for a student who needs to balance the timetable.

IGCSE Environmental Management 0680

Classes 9-10

Water, soils, energy and hazards, a natural fit for students who live with monsoon slopes and forest edges.

IGCSE Geography 0460

Classes 9-10

Rivers, weather, settlement and development, with hill-town case material and plenty of practice on the paper's enquiry-style questions.

IGCSE Economics 0455

Classes 9-10

Basic economic problems, markets and government policy, with tourism and horticulture as familiar cases.

IGCSE First Language English 0500

Classes 9-10

Directed writing, narrative and argument for students who read widely and want the higher ceiling of the first-language paper.

IGCSE Hindi as a Second Language 0549

Classes 9-10

Comprehension and composition tasks in Hindi, useful for students who speak Nepali at home and are adding a third language.

IGCSE Computer Science 0478

Classes 9-10

Computational thinking, algorithms and Python, with trace tables rehearsed for the written papers.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around Kalimpong school timetables

Every format is online, because tutors do not visit homes in Kalimpong and home visits exist only in Gurugram and some areas of Delhi NCR. The three patterns below follow how hill families really study: a day scholar at home, a boarder with a fixed prep hour, or a student preparing for a switch.

Weekly lessons for day scholars

One tutor and one weekly slot after the walk home from school, worked questions on a shared whiteboard, and a brief written summary for parents.

  • Fixed weekly time that survives wet weather
  • A spare slot kept free for lost connections
  • An extra session before mocks
  • Notes in plain language for the family

Fitting around boarding-house routines

A boarder can add subject support during a fixed prep hour or at weekends, on a device the school permits and in a quiet corner.

  • Planned around the house's own timetable
  • Useful for IGCSE Maths or sciences on top of ICSE
  • Long winter holidays suit intensive blocks
  • Parents abroad or far away kept informed in writing

Preparing for a switch or for papers taken privately

For students aiming at an IB school elsewhere, or at Cambridge or Edexcel papers as private candidates, sessions are planned backwards from the admission or exam date.

  • A diagnostic lesson before any syllabus plan
  • Paper-by-paper timetable with mark schemes
  • Advice on reachable exam centres
  • Frank guidance on timing and deadlines

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Kalimpong

01

Do any Kalimpong schools teach the IB or IGCSE?

Not that we could find. The four Kalimpong schools that directories list, Dr Graham's Homes, St Augustine's School, St Joseph's Convent and Rockvale Academy, all appear as ICSE schools, and no IB World School or Cambridge or Edexcel exam centre turned up for the town. The IB and IGCSE are therefore usually studied beside an ICSE, CBSE or West Bengal board course, or after a move.

The town's school tradition is older than its tourist trade. The Scottish Universities Mission Institution opened in 1886, and in 1900 the Church of Scotland missionary John Anderson Graham started Dr Graham's Homes below Deolo Hill with six children, growing to hundreds within two decades. Two former Prime Ministers of Bhutan are among its alumni, a sign of how far the town's boarding reputation has travelled.

A tradition like that gives parents confidence in the boarding houses, but it does not change the credential. ICSE and ISC lead smoothly to Indian universities and are accepted by many abroad. A student who specifically wants IB Diploma points or IGCSE grades has to arrange them separately, through a tutor, a private-candidate entry or a school elsewhere.

Siliguri, 66 kilometres away, is the natural gateway, and the closest large city with working IB and IGCSE classrooms is Kolkata. Families already travel to both for shopping, hospitals and weddings, and some weigh them for schooling too. Before acting on a rumour of a local IB school, check the IB's own list of authorised World Schools.

02

Who in Kalimpong looks for IB and IGCSE tuition?

Mostly families whose work faces outwards: nursery owners who sell orchids, bulbs and cacti to buyers across India, cheese and dairy makers, homestay and hotel hosts at Lava, Rishop and Pedong, and boarders' parents living in Sikkim, Bhutan, Nepal or the plains. They want a child comfortable in English, able to study elsewhere and not tied to a single exam board.

Horticulture deserves a moment of its own. The town is known for its flower market of orchids and gladioli and for nurseries that raise bulbs and cacti, so many students grow up around plants, growing conditions and small businesses that ship across the country. They often lean towards Biology, Business Management or Environmental Systems, and a tutor can build on that curiosity.

A second circle is made up of teachers, clergy, health workers and mission-school staff, many of whom have moved between hills, plains and abroad and compare exam boards closely. A third is boarders' families: a child who lives in a hostel for most of the year has little time at home, so parents ask for structured plans and clear written updates.

The last group is returning professionals who worked in Bengaluru, Delhi or overseas before coming back to the hills. They want a child who began an international syllabus elsewhere to carry on without a break, and an online tutor is the only way to do that from a ridge-top home.

03

ICSE, West Bengal Board, CBSE, IGCSE and the IB side by side

Most Kalimpong students work towards ICSE and ISC, set by the CISCE board, or towards the West Bengal board's Madhyamik at Class 10 and Higher Secondary at Class 12, with CBSE present in a smaller number of schools. ICSE is broad and weighted towards English, so its students often write more fluently than peers from other boards, a real head start in IGCSE English and IB Language A.

The adjustment lies in what earns marks. ICSE and ISC papers prize complete, organised answers to familiar question types. IGCSE and IB papers often ask a student to apply an idea to new data, argue a position or justify a method, and the mark schemes pay for reasoning rather than for a list of facts. A tutor shifts that habit deliberately, one question type at a time.

Sequence matters as much as board. Some students finish ICSE and then join an IB or A Level school, while others replace two or three ICSE subjects with IGCSE ones in Classes 9 and 10. Maths and the sciences tend to move first, because their IGCSE versions map most directly onto the Diploma and A Level.

ICSE and ISC (CISCE)The ICSE day-cum-boarding schools that directories list, among othersFluent, organised English and a broad syllabusFewer evaluate-and-justify questions and little extended data analysis

04

What will IB or IGCSE tutoring cost a Kalimpong family, and why do quotes differ?

  • Level and subject shape the starting rate
  • Weekly sessions and lesson length set the monthly total
  • A start close to exams means more hours, not fewer
  • No travel element and no weather surcharge

There is no price list, because two Kalimpong students can need very different plans. You describe the board, subject, level and timeline, and the rate comes back in writing before the free trial, so you can weigh it calmly against any other option.

Four factors do most of the work. Subject and level come first, since Higher Level Physics or IGCSE Additional Mathematics asks for a rarer specialist than a general English lesson. The number of weekly sessions is second. Third is the balance of teaching to revision, because a student meeting a topic for the first time needs more hours than one polishing exam technique. Fourth is the lead time before an exam series.

Geography adds nothing. A family in Deolo pays no more than a family in Pedong, and nobody charges for climbing the ridge because nobody climbs it. The one hill-specific point is resilience: we build spare capacity into the plan, since landslides, cloud and power cuts occasionally interrupt a session, and a lesson lost to weather is simply rescheduled.

05

Online tutor, hill coaching, boarding prep or a move to Siliguri: how do they compare?

They solve different problems. Hill coaching suits ICSE, CBSE and West Bengal board subjects, boarding-house prep suits supervised homework, and a move suits a family ready for a full IB classroom. An online tutor is the option built for a specific IB or IGCSE syllabus while the student stays where they are.

Local coaching exists for school-board subjects, but teachers who have handled IGCSE Extended papers or IB Higher Level Chemistry are few. An online tutor can be chosen from anywhere in India for that very code, and the trial lesson tests the fit before money changes hands.

Boarding-house prep is valuable for routine and supervision, but the hour is shared, it was never designed around a specialist teaching another syllabus, and house rules on devices vary. A move to Siliguri or Kolkata brings a proper IB classroom at the price of uprooting the student and often the family. Many families therefore try one term of online lessons in the hardest subject before committing to anything bigger.

Study routes open to a Kalimpong student
ChoiceWhat a Kalimpong family gainsWhat to weigh
Online one-to-one tutorA specialist for the exact syllabus, with no travel and a weekly rhythmNeeds a steady connection and practice between lessons
Hill coaching or a school-subject tutorConvenience and familiarity for ICSE, CBSE or Madhyamik subjectsFew teachers have IB or Cambridge paper experience

Moving to Siliguri or KolkataA full IB or IGCSE classroom and peersFamily separation and the highest overall cost
06

How do monsoon landslides, winter cold and the festival round shape the Kalimpong study year?

Weather comes first and festivals second. Kalimpong gets about 2,140 millimetres of rain a year, with a heavy monsoon from June to September that brings landslides and closed roads, while winter nights fall to around 8 degrees. Online lessons survive both, and the plan adds spare slots in the wet months and warm early-evening hours in winter.

The festival calendar is mixed because the town is mixed: Dashain and Tihar in October and November, Diwali and Holi for many families, Sakela for Kirat communities, Losar for Tibetan Buddhist households, and Christmas and Easter for the mission-school community. Durga Puja matters to Bengali families. We write the dates into the plan and keep those weeks light.

School calendars matter too. Some hill boarding schools run a long winter break, which leaves students at home as the IB November session or a Cambridge or Edexcel autumn series approaches. Check your own school's dates, because a student who is home for several winter weeks has found the ideal time for an intensive block.

Tourist seasons shape working families' evenings. In spring and autumn the homestays and hotels are full and a teenager may be helping at the front desk, so lessons are fixed for when the student is free and notes go to parents in writing.

A study year in Kalimpong
MonthsHill conditions and eventsWhat the plan does
December to FebruaryCold nights near 8 degrees, winter break for many schools, Losar and ChristmasWarm early-evening lessons, mock papers and intensive blocks for students at home
March to MaySpring flower season, ICSE and IB exam period, Holi and SakelaTimed papers, steady weekly slots and rest in exam weeks
June to SeptemberHeavy monsoon, landslide risk, Independence Shield football in AugustSpare online slots and quick rescheduling
October to NovemberDashain, Tihar, Diwali and Durga Puja, then the November IB sessionLight weeks, revision blocks and resit preparation
07

After IB or IGCSE, where do Kalimpong students go?

  • Indian admissions treat the IB Diploma as a Class 12 equivalent
  • IGCSE results alone do not open degree admissions and need a next stage
  • JEE, NEET and West Bengal counselling rules change, so recheck yearly
  • Let the intended degree decide which subjects go to Higher Level

Across India and abroad. The Association of Indian Universities recognises the IB Diploma as equal to Class 12, and Diploma students can register for CUET-UG, whereas IGCSE alone marks the end of Class 10 and needs the Diploma, A Level or another Class 11 course after it.

Close to home, Kalimpong College offers undergraduate courses in arts, science and commerce, Siliguri has the University of North Bengal and North Bengal Medical College, and Gangtok has Sikkim University and the Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences. Kolkata, Delhi and Bengaluru draw students for engineering, law, design and management.

For engineering and medicine, read each year's JEE Main, JEE Advanced, NEET-UG and West Bengal counselling notes on international boards, because subject combinations and document requirements get revised. Do this before choosing Class 11 subjects, not after.

Hospitality, environmental science, horticulture, tourism management and Economics are natural interests for hill students, and overseas universities read IB and A Level results without difficulty. Work out the degree first and let it dictate the Higher Level choices.

08

IB Maths, the sciences and IGCSE tiers: what does a tutor actually do on a hill campus?

A tutor sorts out the route first and then trains habits. For IB Maths that means choosing Analysis and Approaches for engineering, physical science and economics, or Applications and Interpretation for business, geography, psychology and hospitality, and then drilling the written working each course rewards.

In the sciences the gaps usually lie in data questions, command terms and extended answers, not in knowledge. Strong ICSE Physics marks do not guarantee practice at judging a method or explaining a graph, so the tutor rehearses those tasks explicitly. Practical work uses whatever a student has: a simulation, a public dataset, or an observation from a nursery, a forest edge or a stream.

For IGCSE, the tier decision is the big one. Core and Foundation papers cap the grade, so a student who may move into IB Higher Level or A Level sciences should normally sit Extended or Higher. A short diagnostic of Extended-style questions shows whether marks leak through method, arithmetic or reading, and the tier follows the evidence.

Subject choice is the other half. A would-be doctor should take the three sciences separately instead of a combined paper, a student drawn to hospitality or tourism may pair Mathematics with Economics, Business Studies and Geography, and Environmental Management suits a hill student who wants to study slopes, water and forests.

Where we tutor

Kalimpong localities and hill villages we support online

Because lessons are online, the useful map is about daylight, cloud and commuting: how steep the school walk is, where mist settles and which villages lose power first. Families write to us from these parts of the district.

Kalimpong Bazaar

The trading centre of town, where shop, nursery and homestay families live around the market, with lively evenings and plenty of school-age children.

9th Mile and the Mela Ground

An open ground used for fairs and sport, so weekends near it can be busier than weekdays and families plan study around events.

Deolo Hill

The highest point in town at 1,704 metres, with a science centre on top and the Dr Graham's Homes campus below, cooler and cloudier than the bazaar.

Durpin Dara

A ridge at about 1,372 metres, home to the Zang Dhok Palri Phodang monastery, where cold mornings and mist shape the study day.

Kalimpong Khasmahal

A residential locality where two of the town's ICSE day-cum-boarding schools are listed, convenient for after-school slots.

Teesta Bazaar

The river-level market far below the ridge, warmer and closer to the main road towards Siliguri and Sikkim.

Lava

A forest-edge village of homestays in the hills above Kalimpong, where families connected to tourism plan evenings around guests.

Rishop

A hill village popular with visitors, where cloud can close in quickly and the working day follows the light.

Pedong

The seat of one of the district's four blocks, on the hill road that once led traders towards the Tibet passes.

Algarah

A ridge hamlet on the forest road beyond Kalimpong, where winter evenings are cold and misty.

Gorubathan

A block town on the lower, warmer side of the district towards the plains, with a school rhythm of its own.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Kalimpong

Kalimpong's hill schools

The four schools that directories list for the town, including historic Dr Graham's Homes and St Augustine's School, are all ICSE. We could not confirm any IB World School or Cambridge or Edexcel centre here, so none is named.

    Nearby: Siliguri

Around 66 kilometres down the valley by road, Siliguri is the plains city where hill families shop, bank and sometimes weigh a change of school. No IB or Cambridge campus there could be confirmed either.

      Nearby: Kolkata (boarding or relocation)

The nearest large city with established IB and IGCSE campuses, reached by a flight from Bagdogra or a long rail journey. A move is a family decision, and IB Gram does not arrange admissions.

      • The Heritage School, Kolkata
      • Calcutta International School
      • The Cambridge School, Kolkata

IB Gram operates independently and has no affiliation to the IB, Cambridge, Pearson or any school named here. School directories show Kalimpong's listed schools as ICSE, so none is presented as an IB or IGCSE school. Schools elsewhere are named only to show where these curricula are taught in the wider region.

      How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

      1. 01

        Send the details

Board, subject, level, current school and any exam or move you already know about; a short message is enough.

      2. 02

        Receive a shortlist

We match tutors to the syllabus and explain in a sentence why each one suits your child.

      3. 03

        Sit a free lesson

One real topic, taught live, with no fee and no pressure to continue.

      4. 04

        Agree the plan in writing

Weekly slots, weather backup slots, topics and the rate are written down and approved before lessons begin.

      5. 05

        Keep it under review

Every few weeks we check progress, adjust the plan or change the tutor.

      Why families choose us

What Kalimpong parents tell us matters most

      Honest about the hill schools

We say that the listed Kalimpong schools are ICSE, not IB, and let you decide from there.

Planned for wet and cold weeks

Spare slots, warm early-evening hours and painless rescheduling are part of every plan.

A tutor for the exact paper

Matching is done on board, code and tier, not on a general subject label.

      Judge before you pay

The free lesson comes first, so the decision rests on real teaching.

      Coaching, not ghost-writing

Essays, IAs and coursework remain the student's own work from first word to last.

      Free to change

No long commitment, and a different tutor on request if the fit is poor.

“Physics HL felt scary before mocks. The tutor mapped my weak topics and gave a realistic command-term plan. Mocks went up by two grade boundaries.”

      Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Kalimpong: your questions answered

Can a tutor come to our house in Kalimpong?+

No. Tutors teach over live video from elsewhere in India, and in-person home visits run only in the Gurugram area and some parts of Delhi NCR. You still get home tuition in the sense that matters: one teacher, a weekly slot and a private lesson at your own desk, with nobody travelling along hill roads in rain or cloud.

Does any Kalimpong school offer the IB or Cambridge IGCSE?+

We could not confirm one. School directories list four Kalimpong schools, Dr Graham's Homes, St Augustine's School, St Joseph's Convent and Rockvale Academy, and show each as ICSE. If a school tells you it offers the IB, ask for its IB World School listing before you plan around it.

Can a boarder have lessons alongside hostel routines?+

Often yes, provided the boarding house allows a device and a quiet room. Houses differ on devices, prep hours and weekends, so ask first. Winter breaks and long holidays suit intensive blocks, and we fit the schedule to whatever the house permits.

What will IB or IGCSE tutoring cost in Kalimpong?+

The rate reflects subject, level, weekly hours and how much teaching, rather than revision, is needed. Nothing is added for travel or distance, and a lesson lost to weather is rescheduled. A written quote arrives before the free trial, so you compare from facts.

Is the internet good enough for video lessons here?+

In most of the town a normal broadband or mobile data connection is workable, though monsoon storms and power cuts can interrupt it and outlying villages are patchier. The free trial tests the connection, we agree a hotspot fallback, and spare slots cover the occasional lost session.

My child is in ICSE. Can they add IGCSE Maths or sciences?+

Yes, and many ICSE students find the Maths approachable. The adjustment is in style: clear method, evaluative wording and tiers. A diagnostic lesson shows where to begin, and you should check with the school about private entries alongside its own exams.

Can my child study Nepali as an IB language?+

Yes, where a school arranges the course. Nepali A literature tutoring covers close reading, analytic essays and the individual oral, working from the texts the school has chosen. If your school does not offer it, tell us, and we will advise on realistic alternatives.

Which IB and IGCSE subjects are requested most?+

Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English come up constantly, with Geography, Environmental Systems, Economics and Business Management close behind in a district built on tourism and horticulture. Nepali and Hindi requests are steady. Tell us if your subject is unusual and we will search for a specialist.

Should we choose Cambridge or Edexcel for IGCSE?+

Choose the board your school or exam centre offers, since switching midway is rarely possible. Cambridge usually sets Core or Extended papers and Edexcel sets Foundation or Higher ones, each on its own exam calendar. Content overlaps a great deal, yet wording and mark schemes differ, so the tutor must know the board.

Where does coaching stop and cheating start?+

At writing. A tutor may explain a rubric, test an idea for a research question and mark a draft, but the words, calculations and data that get handed in have to be the student's own work. Anything else risks a malpractice finding and the loss of results, and we will not take part in it.

Do you teach younger students on PYP and MYP?+

Yes. PYP sessions are short and lively, built around reading aloud, number sense and questions. MYP tutoring supports Maths, sciences and languages and helps keep the Personal Project on schedule. Younger children get frequent short sessions, and parents receive notes suited to their age.

      When should tutoring start?+

Ideally at the start of a course: Class 9 for IGCSE, Class 11 for the Diploma, and a bridging term in Class 10 for an ICSE student aiming at the IB. A later start still helps, but the plan then leans on past papers and exam technique instead of teaching whole topics.

How do Dashain, Losar and the winter break affect lessons?+

Dashain and Tihar, Losar, Christmas and Durga Puja each get a light week in the plan, and a long winter holiday, where the school gives one, becomes a window for intensive work. These dates are listed in the written plan from day one, so a festival never becomes a missed deadline.

Is an IB Diploma accepted by Indian universities?+

Yes, through equivalence with Class 12 and through CUET-UG registration, although each course can add conditions. For engineering and medicine, check the current JEE, NEET and West Bengal counselling notes on international boards every year. IGCSE by itself is a Class 10 qualification and needs a next stage.

Is it worth moving to Siliguri or Kolkata for a full IB school?+

Only if the child and the family want it. A move brings an IB classroom and classmates, but it also means leaving the hills, often splitting a household, and a far higher cost. Testing online lessons for a term first shows whether the IB style suits the student.

What will the first lesson be like?+

It is an ordinary lesson on a real topic from your child's course, taught over video by a shortlisted tutor, free and with no strings. A short note follows, covering what went well, what needs work and how a plan might look, and you then decide whether to continue, switch tutor or stop.
