IB and IGCSE Tutors and Online Private Tuition in Jorhat

Looking for home tuition in Jorhat for an international curriculum? Our tutors teach online, live and one to one, and do not visit houses in Assam. Jorhat is a tea and research town with a famous tea research institute, an agricultural university and a medical college, yet we cannot confirm an IB or Cambridge school here, so the tutor often becomes the teacher.

  • Live one-to-one video lessons from tutors based in India, in IST
  • Not a home-visit city: visits run only in Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR
  • A tutor matched to the exact board, subject and level
  • Free trial lesson and a written summary after each session

IB & IGCSE in Jorhat

Jorhat: tea, research and a long way from an IB campus

For a family in Jorhat typing private tuition or home tuition for the IB or IGCSE into a search bar, the first thing to know is that we cannot confirm a school in the city that teaches either programme. Jorhat is better known as the last capital of the Ahom kingdom, the seat of the Tocklai Tea Research Institute, the home of Assam Agricultural University and a centre of the Assam tea trade. Its classrooms follow the Assam board, CBSE and ICSE.

The children who ask for an international syllabus are a particular group. Tea-estate managers and company families posted to Upper Assam often come from places where the IB or IGCSE was normal. Air force and government families move through Jorhat regularly. Doctors and lecturers from the medical college and the university sometimes plan for a child to study abroad. For each of these, the syllabus has to be taught somewhere, and increasingly it is taught online.

We send nobody to Jorhat homes. In-person tutoring exists only in Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR, so your child works at a laptop at home while a tutor teaches live from elsewhere in India. Many Jorhat families already use video for other reasons and adapt quickly.

IB Gram is an independent service, unconnected with the IB, Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel or any school. Tutors coach and explain but never write Internal Assessments, Extended Essays, TOK essays or coursework.

At a glance

  • No confirmed IB or IGCSE school inside Jorhat
  • Tea-estate, air force, medical and university families form much of the demand
  • Online lessons only; tutors do not visit homes in Assam
  • Free trial lesson and a written note after every class
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to Jorhat school years

Jorhat students meet these programmes in patchy ways: a child who studied the IB in another city before a parent's posting, a student boarding far away, or a family preparing for a move. Below is how each stage tends to appear.

PYPClass 1-5, ages 6-11

IB Primary Years Programme

Learning through units of inquiry and a student-led Exhibition at the end. Tutors usually concentrate on reading, number sense and the research habit the Exhibition needs.

A typical Jorhat PYP case is a child of a company family who joined a PYP school in another city and needs continuity while the parents are posted to the estate.

MYPClass 6-10, ages 11-16

IB Middle Years Programme

Criteria-based assessment across subjects, with the Personal Project in the final year. Students often know the content but struggle to structure it the way a criterion requires.

In Jorhat, MYP work usually happens in term breaks, when a boarding student returns to Assam and needs the gaps closed before going back.

DPClass 11-12, ages 16-19

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects at HL and SL, the Extended Essay, TOK and CAS. Exams are sat in May, with a November session for some candidates.

Jorhat DP students are mostly in boarding schools in Kolkata, Bengaluru or further, or studying with a tutor as the main teacher. Either way, weekly online lessons link home and school.

CPClass 11-12, ages 16-19

IB Career-related Programme

Two or more DP courses alongside a career-related study, a reflective project and skills for work.

CP enquiries from Upper Assam are rare, and we treat the DP courses inside the pathway like any others.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around Jorhat school timetables

Jorhat has a single delivery format, live video, yet families use it in three quite different ways depending on where the student's school is.

Main-teacher course

Two or three lessons each week when the tutor teaches the syllabus because no school nearby does.

  • Term-by-term plan shared with parents
  • Past papers from the second term
  • Extra slots before the May and November sessions

Boarding-student link

A weekly lesson for a student boarding in another city, aligned to the school's scheme and used for the topic that is hardest that week.

  • Follows the school's own notes
  • Flexible around boarding timetables
  • Holiday blocks when the student is home

Transfer preparation

For a student about to move to an IB or IGCSE school and needing to close gaps before the first day.

  • Diagnostic paper first
  • Short plan for vocabulary and writing style
  • Weekly progress note

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in Jorhat

Tutors teach from India in IST, so lessons in Jorhat need no time-zone arithmetic. Sunset arrives early in Upper Assam, so we usually offer late-afternoon and early-evening slots.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Jorhat

01

What international school options do Jorhat families actually have?

  • Assam board, CBSE and ICSE dominate local schooling
  • Tea, defence, medical and university households form the audience
  • Boarding in Kolkata or Guwahati is the usual school route
  • Online tutors teach the syllabus at home or link home to school

Jorhat's schools follow the Assam board, CBSE and ICSE, and we cannot confirm a school here that teaches the IB or Cambridge or Edexcel IGCSE. That can surprise visitors who know Jorhat as an old, educated town with a literary heritage and the headquarters of the Asam Sahitya Sabha.

The demand that exists comes from certain households. Tea companies post managers and their families to Upper Assam, and those families often arrive from cities where the IB is common. The Indian Air Force station brings transferred families. The medical college, the agricultural university and research institutes bring academics who may have studied abroad themselves.

With no local school, a tutor becomes more than a helper. The student may be in a Kolkata hostel for term and at home in Jorhat for long breaks, or may be studying the whole syllabus at home.

We keep our school list honest. If a Jorhat school begins offering the IB or IGCSE, we will verify it before naming it here.

02

How do Assam board, CBSE, ICSE, IGCSE and IB compare for a Jorhat student?

The Assam board syllabus, through HSLC and AHSEC, rewards recall of textbook content. CBSE uses NCERT books with competitive entrance in mind, and ICSE places more weight on English and detailed content. All three prepare students well for Indian entrance exams.

IGCSE and the IB ask for something else. They reward applying a principle to an unfamiliar case and explaining the reasoning in writing. A student who can recite a definition may still lose marks because the question asked for evaluation.

Language adds a layer. Many Jorhat students speak Assamese at home with Bengali or Hindi around, and English is the school language. That can be a strength in language courses and a source of slow reading in long exam papers.

The table compares the routes for a Jorhat family.

03

How much does IB and IGCSE tuition cost in Jorhat, and what sets the rate?

  • Subject and level
  • Sessions per week
  • Tutor experience
  • Teaching from scratch or exam revision

We do not list prices because the rate depends on the subject, the level, the number of sessions and the tutor's experience. An experienced Higher Level Physics tutor quotes differently from a tutor coaching IGCSE English.

In Jorhat, the biggest factor is whether the tutor is teaching or revising. A student learning a course from the first chapter needs more tutor hours than one who only needs exam practice, and a boarding student home for three weeks needs a short, concentrated plan.

Every Jorhat family receives a rate in writing before booking. The first lesson is free, there is no long contract, and you can change or stop at any time.

A sensible start is one subject for four to six weeks. After that, review progress and decide whether to add a second.

04

Is an online tutor better than a Jorhat coaching class, a local tutor or self-study?

Jorhat has a healthy tuition culture, with coaching for board exams, JEE and NEET, and with many private teachers. That works well for those goals. It is less useful for IB Paper 3 Physics or IGCSE Extended Maths, where too few students ask to sustain a specialist.

Self-study suits disciplined learners with good materials, though without feedback a misunderstanding can last for months.

Online one-to-one lessons connect a student with a subject specialist from anywhere in India. The tutor watches working live on a shared screen, corrects it on the spot and sends a note afterwards.

Online also avoids the disruption of monsoon floods and waterlogged roads. The tradeoff is reliable internet, and we are clear that no tutor visits Jorhat homes.

05

How do the Brahmaputra floods, Bihu and early sunsets shape study in Jorhat?

Upper Assam has a rhythm of its own. Monsoon rains between June and September can swell the Brahmaputra and its tributaries, and roads to Majuli and low-lying areas are sometimes disrupted. Online lessons carry on as long as power and data hold.

Bihu sets the festival year: Bohag Bihu in April, Kati Bihu in October and Magh Bihu in January, each bringing family gatherings and travel. Durga Puja and Diwali sit in the autumn, and we plan around them.

Sunsets in Upper Assam arrive early, often before five in winter, which shapes the school day and the tea-garden working day. Lessons are best placed in the late afternoon or early evening, when students are home and before exhaustion sets in.

International exams overlay this: IB papers in May, with a November session for some, and IGCSE series in May-June and October-November.

06

Where can a Jorhat student study after the IB or IGCSE?

  • AIU equivalence and CUET-UG for Indian routes
  • Jorhat institutions and IIT Guwahati within reach
  • Kolkata, Delhi and Bengaluru for wider choice
  • UK, Canada, Australia and US for study abroad

Students from Jorhat look to India, abroad or both. For India, the Association of Indian Universities provides IB Diploma equivalence, and CUET-UG is open to IB students where course rules match. Medicine and engineering rules change, so check each exam's latest notice.

Closer to home, Jorhat has Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat Engineering College, Jorhat Medical College and the Jorhat Institute of Science and Technology, while Guwahati offers IIT Guwahati, Gauhati University and Cotton University. Kolkata, Delhi and Bengaluru attract students who want a wider choice.

Abroad, students typically think of the UK, Canada, Australia and the US, where predicted IB points or IGCSE plus A Level results feed applications.

We tutor the subjects behind those applications and do not write personal statements or promise offers.

07

How are IB Maths and the sciences taught online for a Jorhat student?

IB Maths has two paths. Analysis and Approaches suits engineers and mathematicians, while Applications and Interpretation uses statistics and technology for students heading to economics, psychology or business. The right choice depends on university entry requirements.

During a session the tutor and student share a digital whiteboard and take turns writing, so every line of working is visible. Calculator and spreadsheet screens are shared for statistics and graphing.

Science lessons alternate explanation with exam-style questions, followed by a mark-scheme review. Practical skills use data sets and video, because the student must plan, carry out and write the Internal Assessment alone.

Every course begins with a diagnostic paper so early lessons address real gaps.

08

IGCSE Core or Extended: what should a Jorhat student choose?

IGCSE Mathematics and several sciences have Core and Extended tiers. Core limits the top grade, and Extended offers the full range. A student planning IB Maths HL or A Level Maths should sit Extended.

Subjects follow direction. Medicine and engineering usually call for Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Agriculture and environmental interests might add Geography or Environmental Management. Commerce leans on Economics and Business Studies.

Cambridge and Edexcel differ in paper layout and emphasis, so we confirm the board and code with the family first. Private candidates need an exam centre, and the nearest are in Guwahati or Kolkata.

Tutors explain the timeline, and the family handles registration directly with the centre.

09

What changes when a Jorhat student boards elsewhere but studies with us at home?

Many Jorhat families send a child away for school and then face a familiar problem: the school timetable is fixed, and a student who falls behind in one topic cannot slow the class. A weekly online lesson gives them somewhere to catch up.

The tutor works from the school's own notes and past papers, so the extra hour reinforces class. The lesson can happen on a Sunday from the hostel or in the holidays at home, because it needs only a laptop and a steady connection.

Holiday blocks are especially useful. A student home for Durga Puja or the winter break can do daily lessons for a week or two on the weakest topics and return to school with a short list of things to keep practising.

Parents receive a short written note after each session, so a family in Jorhat can follow progress even when the child is hundreds of kilometres away.

Where we tutor

Jorhat's localities and the towns around it

Jorhat stretches from the old town centre to tea-estate outskirts and river ghats. These notes describe where families write to us from and what matters for lesson timing.

Gar Ali

A central commercial and residential stretch near the town's main market, convenient for families who want an evening slot after shop hours.

Chowkidinghee

An established residential neighbourhood with many professional households; broadband is generally dependable here.

Cinnamara and the Tocklai area

Home to researchers and staff linked to the tea research institute; these households often know the IB or IGCSE from earlier postings.

Borbheta

A locality near the medical college, with doctors' and faculty families who plan for long-term study routes.

Rajabari

Named after a tea estate, this area has company families whose working day starts early, so lessons sit in the late afternoon.

Kaliapani

A residential zone with a mix of government and private-sector families, and steady evening availability.

Teok and Titabar

Towns to the east and south, from where students travel into Jorhat for school; lessons after the return journey work best.

Neamati and the Majuli ferry side

The river-facing side of town, where floods can affect roads in the monsoon, and online lessons remain possible.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Jorhat

Jorhat and Upper Assam

We cannot confirm an IB or Cambridge/Edexcel school in Jorhat, so local families rely on Assam board, CBSE or ICSE schools plus a tutor for the international syllabus.

    Nearby: Guwahati

Guwahati is the closest large city with a Cambridge-linked school we have checked, a long road or short flight away.

    • International School Guwahati

    Nearby: Kolkata (boarding or relocation)

Kolkata is where many Assam families look when they want a full IB Diploma school. That choice belongs to the family and is not an IB Gram service.

    • The Heritage School
    • Calcutta International School

The schools above show where confirmed international options exist in the wider region. IB Gram is independent and has no partnership with them, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and naming a school is not a recommendation.

    Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Jorhat: your questions answered

Is there an IB or IGCSE school in Jorhat?+

We cannot confirm one. Jorhat schools follow the Assam board, CBSE or ICSE. The nearest confirmed options we have checked are in Guwahati and Kolkata. Families therefore combine local schooling with an online tutor, board elsewhere, or plan a move before Class 11.

Do tutors visit homes in Jorhat?+

No. Tutors do not visit homes in Jorhat, because in-person home tuition runs only in Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR. In Jorhat lessons are live and one to one, but online, with your child at a laptop at home and the tutor teaching on video.

Can I get private home tuition for IB in Jorhat online?+

Yes. Each lesson is one student and one tutor at a fixed time, with a shared whiteboard and a written note afterwards. It gives the focus of private tuition at home without anyone travelling, which helps when specialist tutors are not in town.

How much does IB or IGCSE tuition cost in Jorhat?+

We do not publish prices. The rate depends on subject, level, tutor experience and sessions per week, and a student learning a whole course needs more hours than one revising. A written rate is sent before booking, and the first lesson is free.

Can tutors help a boarding student from Jorhat?+

Yes. We use the school's notes and past papers, and book lessons around the boarding timetable, often on Sundays. During holidays at home, students can do short daily blocks on weak topics and return to school with a clear list to practise.

    What happens during monsoon floods?+

Online lessons carry on as long as power and internet hold. If a flood disrupts connections, the tutor reschedules within the week. We suggest charging the laptop and keeping a phone hotspot ready, particularly near the river side of town.

Can my child sit IGCSE exams from Jorhat?+

Usually as a private candidate through an exam centre in a larger city, such as Guwahati or Kolkata. Centre places and deadlines vary, so confirm early. Tutors teach the course and past papers, and the family handles registration directly.

Do tutors write the IA or Extended Essay?+

No, and this is a firm line for us. A Jorhat tutor will ask probing questions, point out where an argument is thin and discuss how a rubric is applied, yet the Internal Assessment, Extended Essay, TOK essay and IGCSE coursework remain entirely the student's own writing.

Which IB Maths course suits a Jorhat student?+

Start from the degree, not the syllabus title. Analysis and Approaches fits a path into engineering or mathematics; Applications and Interpretation fits economics, business or psychology. Look up what your target university asks for, then let a tutor run a short diagnostic to test the fit.

When are the IB and IGCSE exams?+

The Diploma's main sitting is May, and some candidates use November. IGCSE papers come twice a year, May-June and October-November. Ask the school or exam centre which entry applies, then we count the weeks back from it and divide the syllabus into revision blocks.

How does the free trial work?+

You bring one real topic your child is working on. The tutor teaches it for a full session, sees how your child responds, and emails a brief note on what went well. Should the chemistry between them be off, another tutor is offered, and the trial costs nothing either way.

Can younger students in PYP or MYP get lessons?+

Yes. Primary-age pupils get help with reading, number work and planning the Exhibition, and middle-years students with criterion-style writing and the Personal Project. Sessions are shorter for little ones, and the child always does the thinking while the tutor steers.

What if the connection drops in our area?+

A phone hotspot is a cheap safeguard, and a five-minute test call before the trial tells you a lot. A dropped session is made up within the week. Out towards Teok or Titabar, two shorter lessons can suit better than one long hour.

Can Jorhat IB students apply to Indian universities?+

Often they can. Equivalence from the Association of Indian Universities opens most doors, and CUET-UG has a route for IB candidates on many courses. Medicine, engineering and law carry separate conditions, so read each institution's latest notice. Our tutors handle subject teaching only, not admissions advice.

    How do I get started?+

Write to support@ibgram.com or message +91 7439 368 115 on WhatsApp with the board, subject, level and whether your child boards. We reply with a tutor profile and a rate in writing, then arrange a free trial in the late afternoon or early evening.
