IGCSE Tutor Service in India: What Happens After You Book

Most tutoring goes wrong in the operations rather than in the teaching: a reply that never comes, a tutor who cannot be replaced, a month with no report. This page sets out what should happen after you book, what parents should be told, and how to escalate when something is not working.

Service Levels for IGCSE Families in India

An IGCSE tutor service in India is judged after the booking, not before it, and the part families most often run home tuition into trouble over is administrative rather than academic. How quickly is a query answered. What happens when the fit is wrong in week three. Who reschedules the Thursday session when mocks move. What are you told each month, and by whom. Where do you go when a polite request has been ignored twice. This page answers each of those in the order they arise, describes a monthly report worth reading, gives a numbered escalation path, and lists the promises any honest service will decline to make.

Matching

How does a booking run from first query to first session in India?

Five things, and a well-run IGCSE tutor service in India makes all five visible rather than hiding them behind a wall of silence. You send a query or book a free consultation. Somebody asks about the grade, the syllabus codes, the tier, the school's exam series, your locality and the evenings that work. A shortlist of verified tutors follows. A demo or trial session is arranged. You confirm, or you ask to see somebody else. How long that takes depends on what you have asked for, and an honest answer says so rather than quoting a fixed number. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 in a well-supplied locality moves quickly. Cambridge IGCSE Economics 0455 at a specific weeknight time in a smaller city may take considerably longer, and for some combinations the honest answer is that a home visit cannot be arranged at all and an online tutor is the realistic route. A service that promises the same turnaround for every request has not looked at the request. What you should expect in the meantime is contact rather than a result. Silence during a search is the commonest complaint families have, and it is entirely avoidable: an update saying the search is continuing and why is worth more than an unexplained pause. Ask at the start how you will be kept informed and through which channel, because a message thread with one named person works far better than a general number. Before the first session, three details should be confirmed in writing: the slot and its length, the address or the meeting link, and what the tutor will bring or expect. Small things, and the first session goes badly surprisingly often because nobody confirmed that the student needed his own past papers printed.

1. Send the query with grade, syllabus codes, tier and the school's exam series.

2. Answer the scheduling questions honestly, including the evenings that do not work.

3. Receive a shortlist of verified tutors, with availability stated conditionally.

4. Run a demo or trial session before committing to a weekly arrangement.

5. Confirm slot, venue or link, and materials in writing before session one.

Boards and tiers

Series dates, tiers and the operational calendar they create

Operations follow the examination calendar, so a service that does not know which series your school uses cannot schedule sensibly. IGCSE in India means Cambridge IGCSE, from Cambridge International Education, or Pearson Edexcel International GCSE, and it is usually a two-year course across Grades 9 and 10, often followed by the IB Diploma Programme, Cambridge International AS and A Levels, or a move into CBSE or ISC in Class 11. Cambridge series run in February/March, May/June and October/November. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE series run in January and May/June. The February/March series exists specifically for India, so that Grade 10 results arrive in time for Indian school admissions to Class 11 and for IB Diploma or A Level entry in the same academic year. Schools decide which series they enter students for, and a student cannot choose a series independently of the school. That single fact decides when demand peaks, when tutors are hardest to replace, and when a reschedule request will be difficult to honour. Tiers change the operational picture too. Many Cambridge subjects have Core and Extended tiers, and the ceiling differs: Core tops out at grade C while Extended reaches A*. A tier change agreed with the school mid-year is an operational event, not just an academic one, because the tutor's material, the practice papers and sometimes the tutor himself have to change. Tell the service the day the school confirms it. Grading conventions vary as well. Cambridge grades most syllabuses A* to G, some syllabuses have 9 to 1 versions under different codes, and Edexcel International GCSE grades 9 to 1. Reports that quote a grade should say which scale they mean. And for anyone planning ahead, the Association of Indian Universities issues equivalence for international qualifications, with current requirements to be checked with the university or board concerned rather than assumed.

Cambridge series: February/March, May/June and October/November

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE series: January and May/June

February/March is an India-only series and creates the year's busiest replacement period

Core tops out at grade C while Extended reaches A*, so a tier change is an operational event

Reports quoting a grade should say whether the scale is A*-G or 9-1

Who covers 0580 or 0500 when your tutor is unavailable?

Somebody should, and the answer must exist before you need it rather than being improvised on a Tuesday afternoon. Illness, travel and family emergencies happen to tutors as much as to anyone, and the difference between a well-run arrangement and a poor one is whether the week is recovered or simply lost. There are three workable answers and you should know which one applies to you. The session moves to another evening in the same week, which is the best outcome and depends entirely on your own schedule having slack in it. The session converts to online with the same tutor, which works for Cambridge IGCSE First Language English 0500 and Cambridge IGCSE Economics 0455 with almost nothing lost, and works less well for Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 or Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625 where paper working and diagrams matter. Or the session is credited and skipped, which is honest and occasionally the right call in a light week. What should not happen is an unannounced substitute. A different tutor arriving with no briefing wastes the hour and unsettles the student, and for Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 or Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610, where the thread of a topic runs across several weeks, it can cost more than the missed session would have. If a substitute is genuinely needed for a longer absence, ask for the handover note first and treat it as a temporary arrangement with a review date. So ask, in the first conversation, three operational questions. What happens if the tutor cannot attend. What happens if we cannot attend. And how many sessions can be carried forward before they lapse. Sensible services answer all three without hesitating, because they have been asked before.

Agree the missed-session rule for both sides before the first week, not after the first miss

0500 and 0455 convert to online with little lost; 0580 and 0625 lose method and diagrams

Refuse unannounced substitutes, and ask for a handover note for any longer absence

Ask how many sessions can be carried forward before they lapse

A credited, skipped week in a light term is an honest outcome, not a failure

Local coverage

IGCSE tutor service in India: response times differ by city

Operational promises mean different things in different places, and a service that quotes one turnaround for the whole country is quoting a marketing figure. Supply is the variable, and supply is geographic. In the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, an IGCSE tutor service in Mumbai covering Bandra, Juhu, Andheri, Worli, Lower Parel and Malabar Hill has depth, and replacing a tutor mid-term is usually possible without dropping to online. Powai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Vashi and Kharghar are thinner for home visits, so a replacement there frequently arrives as an online tutor and the family should be told that plainly rather than discovering it at the trial. Chennai behaves similarly: an IGCSE tutor service in Chennai around Adyar, Besant Nagar, Alwarpet and Nungambakkam replaces quickly, while Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), Perungudi, Velachery and Anna Nagar take longer and monsoon weeks make weekday evenings unreliable. Pune sits in the middle. Koregaon Park, Kalyani Nagar, Viman Nagar, Kharadi, Aundh, Baner, Balewadi and Wakad all have some local supply, though an IGCSE tutor service in Pune arranging anything across Hinjewadi on a weekday evening should be asked how the tutor plans to get there before the slot is agreed. Central and western India and the south beyond the two big metros are where expectations need resetting. In Indore, Bhopal, Nagpur, Raipur, Jabalpur, Goa, Nashik and Aurangabad, and in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Coimbatore, Mysuru, Mangaluru, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Madurai, a named syllabus at a specific tier may have no local tutor at all. A parent searching for an IGCSE tutor service near me in those cities is usually better served by asking for online from the outset than by waiting weeks for a home visit that will not materialise. An IGCSE tutor service in Delhi across South Delhi and Gurugram, an IGCSE tutor service in Bangalore, an IGCSE tutor service in Hyderabad, an IGCSE tutor service in Kolkata and an IGCSE tutor service in Ahmedabad all fall between the two extremes, with depth in some subjects and none in others.

Mumbai and Chennai central localities replace a tutor fastest; outer suburbs go online

Pune: ask how a tutor will cross Hinjewadi before agreeing a weekday evening slot

Indore, Bhopal, Nagpur and Goa: expect online rather than a home visit for named syllabuses

Kochi, Coimbatore, Visakhapatnam and Madurai: online supply is the realistic first answer

Any service quoting one turnaround for the whole country is quoting a marketing figure

Ask for the honest local answer before you wait three weeks for a home tutor

School ecosystem

Rescheduling around school mocks and the exam series in India

School calendars are the main source of disruption in any tutoring arrangement, and they are predictable, which means the disruption is manageable if somebody bothers. Families at schools such as Dhirubhai Ambani International School, Jamnabai Narsee School, Aditya Birla World Academy, B. D. Somani International School, Greenwood High International School, Canadian International School Bangalore, Chirec International School, Sreenidhi International School, Mercedes-Benz International School and Singapore International School all hit the same pattern: internal assessments and mocks land together, and the weeks around them need a different timetable rather than the usual one. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any school named here, the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge International Education or Pearson Edexcel. Give the service the school calendar at the start, including mock dates as soon as they are published. That one act removes most rescheduling conflicts before they happen, because the tutor plans around them instead of reacting. During a mock week the useful arrangement is usually fewer, shorter sessions rather than the normal load, since the student's evenings are already spent. After mocks, the timetable should change again. Marked scripts arrive, and the next four to six weeks are worth more than any earlier period in the year because for the first time there is real evidence. A service that does not ask to see the mock scripts is not operating well, whatever the tutor's teaching is like. In the final weeks before the series, sessions often need to move at short notice around the school's own revision programme and the examination timetable itself. Agree the rule for that period specifically. Many families switch to shorter, more frequent sessions, accept that some will be online, and give the tutor permission to reschedule directly with the student's calendar rather than through two adults.

Hand over the school calendar and mock dates at the start, not when a clash appears

During mock weeks run fewer, shorter sessions rather than the usual weekly load

The four to six weeks after mock results are the highest-value period of the year

A service that never asks to see mock scripts is not operating well

Agree a separate short-notice rescheduling rule for the weeks before the series

Modes

Home visits, online sessions, or a hybrid fallback?

Treat this as an operational decision as much as a teaching one, because the mode determines how often a session survives contact with a Tuesday. Home tuition delivers the most information and carries the most operational risk. A tutor travelling across a metro in the evening will lose some sessions to traffic, weather and the ordinary chaos of Indian cities, and no arrangement can promise otherwise. What a well-run service can do is set the rule in advance: a tutor who cannot reach you converts the session to online from wherever he is, and a session cancelled with reasonable notice is rescheduled rather than lost. Home classes also need a settled study space and, for a Grade 9 or Grade 10 student, an adult somewhere in the flat. Online tuition is the operationally robust option. Nothing depends on travel, short-notice rescheduling is far easier, and a replacement tutor can start within days rather than weeks because the search is no longer limited to your locality. The cost is what the tutor cannot see: the working not written down, the diagram drawn too small, the phone under the desk. A hybrid week is the sensible default for most families and should be chosen rather than discovered. Set one home session for the subject where paper matters and one online session for the subject where it matters less, and write down that difficult evenings convert rather than cancel. Stated plainly: home visits give the best diagnosis and the least reliable calendar, online gives the most reliable calendar and the least diagnosis, and hybrid keeps the useful parts of each at the price of a schedule everyone has to actually read.

Set the conversion rule in advance: a blocked evening becomes an online session

Home tuition needs a settled study space and an adult somewhere in the flat

Online replacements can usually start sooner, because the search is not limited by locality

Hybrid should be chosen deliberately at the start rather than drifted into by March

No arrangement can promise that every home visit will happen on time

Who answers when something goes wrong: four tutoring routes in India

These four routes teach in much the same way and differ sharply in what happens on a bad week. Judge them on one question rather than on their descriptions: if the arrangement stops working in the middle of Grade 10, who picks up the phone, and what can they actually do about it? Convenience and cost matter, but recoverability is what families remember.

Who answers when something goes wrong: four tutoring routes in India
What mattersA verified tutor through IB GramAn independent freelance tutorA local tuition centreA school teacher's private tuition
Who you contact about a problemA named contact at the platform, separate from the tutor being discussedThe tutor himself, which makes an awkward conversation unavoidableThe centre's coordinator, who may or may not know your childThe teacher, and raising it risks affecting the classroom relationship
Speed of first matchDepends on syllabus, tier and locality, and should be answered honestly upfrontImmediate if the person is free, and a fresh search if he is notUsually the fastest, because a batch place exists or it does notImmediate where the school permits it, and impossible where it does not
Replacing a tutor mid-courseAsk for a different match and request a handover note with the changeYou run the whole search again, under time pressureThe centre reassigns from its own staff, often the same weekEffectively not available without changing the classroom relationship
Rescheduling around mocksPlanned from the school calendar if you supply mock dates earlyFlexible and personal, though dependent on one person's other commitmentsHardest, because a batch timetable cannot move for one studentEasiest in principle, since the teacher already knows the mock schedule
Monthly reporting to parentsCan be agreed as a standing commitment and reviewed if it lapsesDepends entirely on the individual and on what you asked forOften a standard progress card covering the batch rather than the childUsually verbal, and overlapping with the school's own reporting
Written record of each sessionOne line per session, visible to both sides, which makes a later handover possibleRare unless requested at the start and checked in month oneUsually recorded at batch level rather than per studentHeld informally, because the teacher already tracks the class
Cost structurePriced per session by level and format, with travel reflected in home visitsOften the lowest, with no organisation behind itLower per hour when shared, higher for an individual slotVaries, and may be constrained by the school's policy on private tuition

Verification

What is checked before a tutor reaches your home

Before a profile goes live on IB Gram, identity, qualifications and claimed teaching experience are checked, and the syllabuses and levels a tutor says he teaches are recorded against what he can show. For an IGCSE booking that means the named syllabus matters: teaching Mathematics is not the same claim as teaching Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 at Extended tier, and the profile should distinguish them. Say plainly what verification does not cover. Nobody has observed every lesson. Nobody can predict whether this tutor will suit this student, or whether he will still be reliable in month nine. Those are discovered, which is why a trial exists and why the replacement process matters more than the vetting process for most families. There are checks you should run yourself in the first week. Confirm the tutor's name and contact match what you were sent. Agree that scheduling and progress messages copy a parent rather than going only to the student. Keep sessions in a shared room with the door open, which is the norm for home tuition and should not need negotiating. And ask the tutor directly which syllabus code and which tier he is teaching towards, then check that against the school's own paperwork. One more check is worth making at the end of the first month, and almost nobody makes it. Ask the tutor what he would do if he thought the arrangement should stop. The answer separates somebody running a professional service from somebody protecting a weekly slot.

Identity, qualifications and claimed teaching experience are checked before a profile goes live

Profiles should name the syllabus code and tier, not just the subject

Confirm the tutor's identity in week one and copy a parent on all scheduling messages

Keep home tuition sessions in a shared room with the door open, as standard practice

Ask what the tutor would do if he thought the arrangement should end

Service levels: what a tutoring service should commit to

An IGCSE tutor service in India is a set of operational commitments wrapped around a teaching relationship, and the commitments are what you are paying the service for rather than the individual. There are six worth insisting on, and each one should be answerable in a sentence. First, a named point of contact. Not a general number, not a rotating inbox: one person who knows your case. This single item removes more frustration than everything else combined, because most complaints in this industry are really complaints about having to explain the situation again. Second, an honest matching answer. If no tutor for Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610 exists in your locality at the time you want, the useful response is that fact, offered quickly, with online as an alternative. A slow search dressed up as a careful one costs the family weeks. Third, a replacement route. If the fit is wrong, you should be able to ask for a different match without justifying yourself at length, and without the conversation becoming personal. Fit failures are ordinary. In Grade 10 they are also urgent, and a service should treat them that way. Fourth, records. What was covered each session, in one line, kept somewhere both sides can see. It costs the tutor two minutes and it is the only thing that makes a handover possible later. Fifth, a monthly report to parents, which the next section covers in detail. And sixth, an escalation path that does not run through the person you are complaining about. Every service needs one, and very few publish it. Ask for it before you need it, because the moment you need it is the moment nobody is answering.

A named point of contact who knows the case, not a general number

An honest matching answer quickly, including the answer that nobody is available locally

A replacement route you can use without a long justification

One line of written record per session, visible to both sides

A monthly report to parents, and an escalation path that bypasses the tutor

What should parents be told every month in India?

Four things, briefly, in writing, and without the family having to ask: what was covered, what the marked work showed, what the student is doing between sessions, and what changes next month. Half a page is plenty. A monthly report that runs to three pages of encouragement is a report nobody reads and nobody can act on. What was covered should be specific enough to check against the school's scheme of work. Topics and question types, not simply the subject name. What the marked work showed is the part that matters most, and it should include at least one honest negative, because a month in which nothing went wrong did not happen. Between-session work should say what was set and what was actually returned, since the gap between those two is often the real story. And the plan for next month should be short and falsifiable. Something a parent can check in four weeks without any expertise at all. When something goes wrong and the ordinary conversation has not fixed it, escalate in this order: 1. Raise it directly with the tutor, once, specifically, and in writing rather than in passing at the door. 2. If nothing changes within two sessions, raise it with your named contact at the service and ask for a dated response. 3. Ask for a different match, and ask for the handover note as part of that request. 4. If the issue is conduct rather than fit, say so explicitly and ask for it to be recorded, not resolved informally. And hold on to the limits. No tutor can guarantee a grade. A service that describes a specific outcome, or a particular improvement, is making a claim nobody can keep, and the honest version is a plan, a review date and the freedom to change your mind.

Monthly, in writing: coverage, what marked work showed, work between sessions, next month

Coverage should name topics and question types, not just the subject

Every honest monthly report contains at least one negative

Escalate in writing to the tutor first, then to your named contact with a dated response

Conduct issues should be recorded rather than resolved informally

The promises an honest service in India refuses to make

There are five, and hearing any of them should slow a family down rather than reassure it. A specific grade, or a promised improvement of any particular size. Nobody can promise the outcome of an examination sat by somebody else, and the promise tells you the service is selling to anxiety. A better answer is a plan, a review, and an honest description of what is realistic given how many weeks remain. Immediate availability for everything. Some combinations of syllabus, tier, locality and time slot simply have no local tutor, and the honest response is to say so and offer online. A service that says yes to every request will say yes to yours and then go quiet. That a tutor will never change. People move cities, take jobs and have families. What can be promised is a handover note and a replacement process, which is worth far more than an assurance that will be broken eventually. That coursework will be handled. It will not, and it should not be. A tutor may teach the skill, discuss a plan and explain how marks are awarded, and may not write, edit or contribute content to submitted work. Any service offering more than that is offering a risk to the student's entry, not a service. And that results will be attributed to them. Teaching contributes. Schools teach most of the course. Students do the work. To begin, send a query or book a free consultation with the grade, the syllabus codes, the tier and the school's series. IB Gram asks about level, location and schedule, then shortlists verified tutors, subject to availability. Arrange a trial before committing, and ask for your named contact and the escalation path in that first conversation rather than in a difficult month.

No specific grade, score or percentage improvement can honestly be promised

No service can promise instant availability for every syllabus, tier and slot

No tutor can be promised permanently; a handover process is worth more than the promise

Coursework support stops at teaching the skill and explaining the mark scheme

Ask for your named contact and the escalation path in the first conversation

IB Gram is an independent tutoring platform and is not officially affiliated with any school named on this page, the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge International Education or Pearson Edexcel.

FAQs

IGCSE tutoring FAQs

How quickly should a query be answered and a tutor found?+

The reply should be quick and the match should be honest rather than fast. For a common request such as Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 in a well-supplied locality, a shortlist usually follows soon. For a specific syllabus at a specific weeknight time in a smaller city, it can take considerably longer, and sometimes the honest answer is that no local home tutor exists and online is the route. What should never happen is silence: ask at the start who will update you and through which channel.

What do we do if the tutor is good but the fit is wrong?+

Say so early and without building a case. Fit failures are ordinary, and a tutor who is excellent with one student can be wrong for another for reasons neither party controls. Ask for a different match, request a handover note as part of the change, and expect the conversation to be handled by someone other than the tutor. In Grade 10 treat it as urgent rather than polite, because a term spent being patient is a term you will not get back.

What should a monthly report to parents actually contain?+

Four things on half a page: what was covered, what the marked work showed, what the student was set between sessions and what he returned, and what changes next month. Coverage should name topics and question types rather than just the subject. There should be at least one honest negative, because a month with nothing wrong in it did not happen. The plan for next month should be short enough for a parent to check in four weeks without any subject expertise.

Can home tuition sessions be rescheduled during mock week?+

Yes, and they usually should be. During mocks the student's evenings are already committed, so fewer and shorter sessions work better than the normal weekly load, and some families pause for the week entirely. Give the service the mock dates as soon as the school publishes them, because a reschedule planned a month ahead is easy and one requested on the day is not. After mocks, the marked scripts arrive and the following four to six weeks are the most valuable of the year.

Our home tuition tutor keeps arriving late in Thane. What is the escalation path?+

Raise it directly with the tutor once, in writing and specifically, naming the dates. If nothing changes within two sessions, raise it with your named contact at the service and ask for a dated response rather than sympathy. If it still continues, ask for a different match or for the arrangement to convert to online, which removes the cause entirely. Chronic lateness across Thane, Navi Mumbai and Kharghar usually means the travel distance was never realistic, so a hybrid week is often the real fix.

What happens when the tutor is ill or travelling?+

One of three things, agreed in advance: the session moves within the same week, it converts to online with the same tutor, or it is credited and skipped. Which one suits you depends on how much slack your week has. What should not happen is an unannounced substitute arriving with no briefing, because for subjects such as Chemistry 0620 or Biology 0610, where a topic runs across several weeks, that wastes the hour. For longer absences, ask for a handover note and a review date.

We are in Coimbatore and nobody teaches 0455 here. What can a service realistically offer?+

Online, quickly, rather than a home visit eventually. Supply for named syllabuses thins sharply across Coimbatore, Kochi, Mysuru, Mangaluru, Visakhapatnam and Madurai, and waiting for a local Economics tutor who may not exist costs a family weeks it could have spent teaching. A service worth using says this in the first conversation rather than the fourth. Economics transfers well online because the assessed work is written, so relatively little is lost by comparison with a subject where paper working matters.

Should the service speak to our school directly?+

No, and be wary of one that offers to. The relationship with the school belongs to the family, and an outside tutor contacting a coordinator or subject teacher unprompted creates awkwardness that lands on the student. What a service can do is help you prepare for the conversation: which question to ask about tier, what to bring to a parent meeting, and how to describe a difficulty precisely. Ask the school for its own written position on private tuition and coursework support.

How much notice do we need to give to stop?+

Whatever you agreed at the start, which is why agreeing it matters. A notice period of a couple of weeks is common and protects both sides: the tutor has planned his term around your slot, and you should not be locked in longer than that. Give notice at a review point rather than by message where you can, ask for a handover note whether or not a new tutor is coming, and settle anything outstanding. Ending well costs nothing and keeps the option open.

Is it reasonable to ask for session-by-session records?+

Entirely, and one line per session is enough. Date, topic, question types, and what was set. It costs the tutor two minutes, it lets you see coverage against the school's scheme of work, and it is the single thing that makes a later handover fast rather than painful. Ask for it in the first week rather than in month six, because records nobody kept cannot be reconstructed. If a service declines this, that answer is itself informative.

What promises should make us suspicious?+

Any specific grade or promised improvement, instant availability for every syllabus and slot, an assurance that the tutor will never change, and an offer to handle coursework. Each of those is either impossible or improper. The honest versions are a plan with a review date, a truthful answer about local supply, a handover process, and support that stops at teaching the skill and explaining how marks are awarded. A service that says no to something in the first conversation is usually the more reliable one.

Does a booking near the exam series work differently?+

Yes, and the operational rules should change with it. In the final weeks sessions need to move at short notice around the school's revision programme and the examination timetable, so agree a separate short-notice rule for that period. Many families shift to shorter, more frequent sessions, accept that some will be online, and let the tutor coordinate directly with the student's own calendar. Expect the content to narrow too, dropping topics deliberately rather than adding them.

Ready to plan IGCSE support?

Send a query or book a free consultation with the grade, the syllabus codes, the tier and the exam series your school uses. IB Gram asks about level, location and schedule, then shortlists verified tutors for an IGCSE tutor service in India that suits your week, subject to availability, and a trial can be arranged before you commit. Ask for your named contact, the monthly report and the escalation path in that first conversation.
