One-to-one, a small batch, a past-paper clinic, a revision course before the series: four different products that all get called classes. They suit different students and they return marked work at very different speeds. This page sorts out which is which, and how each one fits around a Grade 10 timetable.

IGCSE tuition classes in India come in four shapes: one-to-one home classes or online lessons, a small group batch, a past-paper clinic that marks timed work, and a short revision course run before a series. Each does a different job. A batch suits a student who understands the content and needs pace. A clinic suits one who knows the material and loses marks on the paper itself. One-to-one suits a problem that is specific to this student and this syllabus. The format matters far more than the provider's name, and two things decide it: how quickly written work comes back marked, and whether the timetable survives an ordinary Grade 10 school day with sport, prep and travel already in it.
Format is settled before anybody is named. You send a query or book a free consultation, and the questions that follow are about the board and syllabus, the tier the school has entered the student for, the subjects, the school calendar and the hours that are actually free once a Grade 10 day has taken its share. A student doing well in Chemistry theory and badly in the alternative to practical does not need the same class as one who has not understood moles. The second question is about evidence. Bring the last marked paper rather than a description of the problem. Marks lost on recall, marks lost on method and marks lost on reading the question look identical on a report card and need three different formats. This is the single most useful thing a parent can do before choosing anything. Then the shortlist. Verified tutor profiles are matched against board, syllabus, subject and tier, and a demo or trial session can be arranged before the family commits. Ask in that session what the tutor would set in week one and when it would come back marked. Marking turnaround is the quiet difference between a class that works and one that fills an evening. If the fit is wrong, ask for a different match. Be specific: too fast, too slow, no written work, or a group that turned out to mix tiers. Availability of any particular format at any particular hour depends on subject, tier and schedule, and a Saturday morning batch in a small city is a harder thing to find than a weekday one-to-one online.
1. Send a query or book a free consultation with board, syllabus and tier
2. Send the last marked paper, not a description of what went wrong
3. Choose the format from that evidence: one-to-one, batch, clinic or revision course
4. Take a trial session and ask when written work comes back marked
5. Fix the weekly hour against the school timetable before paying for a term

The tier decides the class, and the school decides the tier. In India, IGCSE means Cambridge IGCSE, from Cambridge International Education, or Pearson Edexcel International GCSE, normally taught across Grades 9 and 10 and followed by the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, Cambridge International AS and A Levels, or a move into CBSE or ISC in Class 11. Many Cambridge subjects are tiered: Core tops out at grade C, while Extended reaches A*. Cambridge grades most syllabuses A* to G, with some syllabuses having 9 to 1 versions under different codes, and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE grades 9 to 1 throughout. That single fact rules out a lot of group classes. A batch containing Core and Extended candidates in the same subject is teaching two different papers at once, and one half of the room is always being underserved. Ask the question directly before enrolling: which tier is this class taught to, and what happens to a student sitting the other one. The sciences make it concrete. For Cambridge sciences examined from 2023, Core candidates sit Paper 1 multiple choice and Paper 3 theory, Extended candidates sit Paper 2 multiple choice and Paper 4 theory, and practical work is assessed through Paper 5, the practical test, or Paper 6, the alternative to practical, with the school choosing which. Weighting runs 30 per cent multiple choice, 50 per cent theory and 20 per cent practical. Pearson Edexcel sciences are untiered, with Paper 1 and Paper 2 for each separate science and practical skills examined inside the written papers. So a class that never distinguishes Paper 5 from Paper 6 preparation is not really teaching your child's course. Ask which one the school has entered, and ask the class to say what it does differently for each.

Practical is Paper 5 or Paper 6, and the school chooses which
Edexcel sciences are untiered, with practical skills inside the written papers
Syllabus codes are the fastest way to tell whether a class is real. Ask for the code, then ask what the class does about the parts of it that lose marks. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 is the subject most often taught as a batch, and it works there for a student who is fluent and slow rather than confused. Where a student is confused, a group moves past the gap and the gap widens. Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625 and Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 both reward a class built around question types rather than chapters, because the theory paper rewards precision of wording that no amount of reading produces on its own. Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610 is the volume subject: the topic list is long, so a class here should be spending its time on planned revisiting rather than on first coverage. Cambridge IGCSE Economics 0455 works well in a small group, since discussion genuinely improves evaluation answers and students learn from hearing a weaker argument dismantled. Cambridge IGCSE First Language English 0500 is the opposite. Writing is personal, and a class of twelve cannot mark twelve pieces of extended writing every week with any useful detail, which is why English at IGCSE so often disappoints in a batch and improves quickly one-to-one. Home classes have an advantage the others do not for subjects with a lot of written working. A tutor beside the student sees the method abandoned halfway, the units left off, the diagram drawn too small to label. Online works well for multiple choice drilling, for data questions, and for any subject where the work is discussion and text. Split by subject rather than picking one format for everything.
Ask for the syllabus code before anything else: 0580, 0625, 0620, 0610, 0455, 0500
Mathematics 0580 suits a batch only when the student is fluent but slow
Physics 0625 and Chemistry 0620 classes should be built around question types
Biology 0610 needs planned revisiting, not first coverage, from a class
First Language English 0500 rarely works in a large batch; marking cannot keep up
IGCSE tuition classes in India are not evenly distributed, and the gap widens sharply outside the biggest cities. In Delhi NCR the full range exists: batches and revision courses run in South Delhi, Vasant Kunj, Dwarka, Gurugram (Gurgaon), Golf Course Road, Noida and Sector 128 Noida, while Greater Noida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad are thinner and mostly one-to-one. A parent looking for an IGCSE tuition class in Delhi should ask where the class physically sits before enrolling, because an advertised centre address and the actual teaching location are sometimes different. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region has depth and a travel problem. An IGCSE tuition class in Mumbai held in Bandra, Juhu, Andheri, Worli or Lower Parel means a school-night journey for a student in Thane, Navi Mumbai, Vashi, Kharghar or even Powai, and that journey is the reason batches lose students by December. Hyderabad concentrates hard: Gachibowli, HITEC City, Madhapur, Kondapur and the Financial District have the most options, with Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills close behind, while Secunderabad and Kokapet families travel or move online. Anyone searching for an IGCSE tuition class in Hyderabad should ask about the batch size before the address. Gujarat runs on a smaller scale. An IGCSE tuition class in Ahmedabad is usually found around Satellite, Bodakdev and SG Highway, with Gandhinagar reachable at fixed hours, and Surat, Vadodara and Rajkot supporting one-to-one far more reliably than any group. Central and western India is where IGCSE classes near me stops returning anything useful. Indore, Bhopal, Nagpur, Raipur, Jabalpur, Nashik, Aurangabad and Goa have small IGCSE cohorts spread across few schools, so an IGCSE batch class in a specific subject at a specific tier may simply not exist. Online groups solve this properly: a small online batch can gather eight students on the same syllabus from eight different cities. The same reasoning applies to an IGCSE tuition class in Bangalore, in Chennai, in Pune and in Kolkata once you get past the mainstream subjects and into a scarce one.
Delhi NCR has the full range; Faridabad and Ghaziabad are mostly one-to-one
Mumbai: a batch across town is a school-night journey that ends by December
Hyderabad: Gachibowli, HITEC City and Madhapur hold most of the group options
Gujarat beyond Ahmedabad supports one-to-one far better than any batch
Indore, Bhopal, Nagpur and Goa: online groups gather a cohort that no city has
Work out the free hours before choosing the class, not afterwards. A Grade 10 student in India typically leaves the house early, returns in the late afternoon, and then has school work, an activity or two and travel already spoken for. What is left is usually two weekday evening slots and a weekend morning, and a family that books three classes into that space has built a timetable nobody can keep. The series matters as much as the week. Cambridge exam series run in February/March, which is offered only in India, in May/June, and in October/November, while Pearson Edexcel International GCSE series run in January and May/June. The February/March series exists precisely so that Grade 10 results arrive in time for Indian school admissions to Class 11 and for entry to the IB Diploma Programme or A Levels in the same academic year. Schools decide which series they enter students for, and a student cannot choose a series independently of the school, so confirm the date with the school before booking anything described as a pre-series course. That single confirmation prevents the commonest mistake of the year. A revision course timed for May/June is useless to a student sitting February/March, and the two cohorts are often sitting in the same room in October. For equivalence questions, the Association of Indian Universities issues equivalence for international qualifications, and families should check current requirements with the university or board concerned rather than assume. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any school named on this page, the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge International Education or Pearson Edexcel.

Home classes are the most accountable, online classes are the most available, and a hybrid week is what most Grade 10 families end up with once February approaches. Nobody plans it that way in June. A home class cannot quietly become a shorter class. The tutor is in the room, the work is on the table, and a student cannot half-attend while a phone sits out of the camera's view. It costs travel, which shows up as a narrower choice of tutor and a rate that reflects an evening crossing a city. Online classes remove that entirely and open up small groups that no single locality could fill, which matters enormously for a scarce subject or a specific tier. What online costs is supervision: a Grade 10 student working alone in a bedroom is easier to lose than one at the dining table with a tutor beside them. Hybrid is the useful middle for this stage. Keep one home class a week for the subject where written method needs watching, and take the rest online, including the past-paper clinic, where the work is marking and feedback rather than teaching. During the last month before a series, add short online sessions rather than extra travel. There is one arrangement worth avoiding. Booking home classes for every subject in Grade 10 fills the week with travel that the tutor pays for and the student waits through, and by January two of those slots will have quietly moved online anyway. Whichever way you go, write the mode against each subject in advance. A family that decides mode on the evening will be entirely online by January, without anyone having chosen that.
Home classes: hardest to shorten, highest accountability, narrowest choice of tutor
Online classes: widest choice, and small groups that one locality could not fill
Hybrid: one home class for written method, the rest online including the clinic
In the last month before a series, add online time rather than extra travel
Decide the mode per subject in advance or the week drifts entirely online
Every column here is worth choosing for the right student, so read across rather than looking for a winner. The two rows that decide most cases are marking turnaround and whether the slot survives a school day. A family running two subjects will often want two different columns, and that is a sensible outcome rather than an inconsistency.
| What matters | One-to-one tuition at home | One-to-one tuition online | A small online group class | A large classroom batch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marking turnaround on timed work | Immediate; the script is marked in front of the student in the same hour | Same session, with the script shared on screen and annotated live | Within a few days, since three or four scripts are manageable | Often only selected scripts in detail, with a model answer for the rest |
| Handling Core and Extended in one room | Not an issue; the tier is set to this student | Not an issue, and the tutor can be matched to the tier exactly | Works only if the whole group sits the same tier | The common failure point; one tier is usually underserved |
| Preparing Paper 5 or Paper 6 in the sciences | Strong; apparatus and diagrams can be drawn and corrected on paper | Good for the alternative to practical, weaker for handling apparatus | Reasonable for Paper 6 technique, shared across the group | Usually generic, since schools differ on which paper they enter |
| Hearing how another student answers | Absent; the student only ever sees their own answer | Absent, unless the tutor brings anonymised scripts to the screen | The main reason to choose it: a good and a poor answer, side by side | Present but one-directional; the teacher answers, the room listens |
| Slots that survive a Grade 10 school day | Two weekday evenings, provided the tutor teaches nearby | The most flexible; early mornings and late slots are both possible | Fixed group hours that may clash with school activities | Fixed centre hours plus travel after a full day of school |
| Cost per hour, described rather than priced | The highest, with the tutor's evening travel built into it | Below a home visit for the same tutor, since nobody travels | Shared across the group, so meaningfully lower per family | The lowest of the four, which is a genuine advantage for several subjects |
| Use in the four weeks before a series | Best for correcting a student's own repeated errors | Good, and easy to run in short frequent sessions | Strong for timed practice with shared feedback afterwards | Useful for whole-syllabus consolidation at speed |
| Which student it genuinely suits | One with a specific gap, or who will not work unsupervised | One who is independent and needs a tutor no city nearby has | One who understands the subject and needs pace and comparison | One who has kept up and wants structured coverage at low cost |
Six questions, and all of them are answerable in one phone call. Which syllabus code and which tier is the class taught to? How many students are in the room, this term, not at capacity? Who marks the written work and how many days does it take to come back? Which past-paper series will be used and where do the markschemes come from? Does the same teacher take the class all year? And what happens if the student joins late or misses three weeks around a school trip? If the answers are confident and specific, the class is probably run by somebody who has done it before. If the answer to the marking question is that work is discussed in class, you are enrolling in a lecture. For a tutor who will teach at your house, the checks are slightly different. Identity, claimed qualifications and teaching experience are verified before a profile is shortlisted through IB Gram, and profiles are matched to board, syllabus, subject and tier. Beyond that, agree the arrival window, the rescheduling rule and gate entry at the start, and fix a single study space in the house. One warning about language. No tutor and no class can guarantee a grade, and anything that promises a specific result, a jump of two grades or a particular percentage deserves scepticism rather than a deposit. A class that instead tells you honestly which paper the student is losing marks on, and how it plans to fix that, is giving you something far more useful.
Ask for the syllabus code and the tier the class is actually taught to
Ask the current number of students in the room, not the advertised capacity
Ask who marks written work and how many days it takes to return
Ask whether the same teacher takes the class for the whole year
Ask what happens if the student joins late or misses three weeks
One-to-one, run as home classes or online, is diagnosis and repair. A tutor works from this student's marked papers, finds what is actually going wrong, and rebuilds it. It suits a student whose problem is specific: a topic never understood, a method half-learned, writing that never reaches the standard the markscheme rewards. It is the most expensive hour and often the fewest hours needed. A small batch of three or four is pace and comparison. It suits a student who broadly understands the subject and needs to move faster, to see harder questions, and to hear how somebody else answered the same thing. It fails when the group mixes tiers, when the students are at different points in the syllabus, or when the batch quietly grows to nine over a term. A past-paper clinic is the format Indian families use least and probably need most. It is not teaching. The student sits a timed section, the work is marked against the actual markscheme, and the session is spent on why marks were lost: a command word misread, a unit dropped, an evaluation that never evaluated. A good clinic produces three things every week, and you should ask for all three: a marked script, a list of the specific errors, and the next paper to sit. If a clinic produces only a score, it is a test centre. A pre-series revision course is compression. Two to four weeks, the whole syllabus at speed, usually in a group, timed just before a series. It suits a student who has kept up and needs consolidation. It does very little for one who has not, because there is no time to teach anything properly, and that is the honest limit nobody advertises.
One-to-one: diagnosis and repair for a specific, personal problem
Small batch of three or four: pace, harder questions and peer comparison
Past-paper clinic: timed section, marked against the markscheme, errors named
A clinic should produce a marked script, an error list and the next paper
Pre-series revision course: consolidation for a student who has kept up
A revision course cannot teach a syllabus that was never learned
Batch size is really a marking question. A teacher with four students can mark four extended answers properly between sessions and return them with comments the student can act on. The same teacher with sixteen students cannot, so the work either goes unmarked, gets marked by somebody else, or gets discussed in class as a model answer while nobody's own script is corrected. Ask how many, and ask who marks. A reasonable expectation for IGCSE tuition classes in India is written work returned within a week, with the errors named rather than a score written at the top. For a past-paper clinic it should be faster, because the marking is the product. For a large batch before a series, honest providers will tell you that only selected work is marked in detail, and that is fine as long as they say so. Now the limits worth stating plainly. A class cannot make up two years of missed foundation in eight weeks. A student sitting Core cannot reach A* in that subject, because Core tops out at grade C, so the useful conversation there is about whether the school will move them to Extended and by when. A student joining a batch in January for a February/March series is joining at the point where the group is consolidating, not teaching. And progress shows in a specific order. First the marks lost on reading the question disappear. Then method errors drop. Then content gaps close, which is slowest. If nothing has changed in the first category after six weeks, the format is wrong rather than the effort.
Four students is markable every week; sixteen is not, whatever is advertised
Expect written work back within a week, with errors named rather than scored
Core tops out at grade C, so the tier conversation belongs with the school
A revision course cannot replace two years of missed foundation work
Progress order: question-reading errors first, then method, then content gaps
The last stretch is where families buy the most and gain the least, and it is where IGCSE tuition classes in India get booked all at once instead of in sequence. Here is a plan that fits around school and does not need a crash course to work. It assumes roughly eight weeks and a student who has covered the syllabus. Run it at home wherever you can. Printed past papers, a markscheme in a separate folder, a timer, and one binder per subject beat any amount of new material bought in the final month. Home classes in this period should be short and frequent rather than long, because a tired Grade 10 student learns nothing after ninety minutes on a school night. What IB Gram does at this point is deliberately limited. You send a query or book a free consultation. You are asked about board, syllabus, level, school calendar, location and schedule. Verified tutor profiles that match are shortlisted. A demo or trial session can be arranged before you commit. Classes run at home, online or as a hybrid week, and if the fit is wrong you can ask for a different match. Availability in the weeks before a series depends on subject, tier and schedule, and the good slots go early. One last note for parents. In the final fortnight, reduce the tuition rather than adding to it. The marks are won by sitting papers and correcting them, and a student with three classes and no time to correct anything will walk into the hall having practised very little of what the examiner is going to ask.
1. Weeks eight to six: sit one full past paper per subject, untimed, and mark it honestly
2. Weeks six to four: list the topics that lost marks, and teach only those
3. Week four: switch to timed sections, one a day, rotating across subjects
4. Week three: work through the markscheme wording for the errors that keep repeating
5. Week two: sit two full timed papers per subject under real conditions
6. Final week: correction and sleep only, with tuition reduced rather than increased
IB Gram is an independent tutoring platform and is not officially affiliated with any school named on this page, the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge International Education or Pearson Edexcel.
Past four or five students, written work stops being marked properly, and that is the point at which a batch becomes a lecture. The teaching can still be good. What disappears is individual correction, which is where most IGCSE marks are actually recovered. Ask how many students are enrolled this term rather than the advertised maximum, ask who marks the scripts, and ask how long marking takes. A class of twelve that returns a marked extended-writing piece every week is doing something unusual, so ask how.
It is a marking session rather than a teaching session. The student sits a timed section under conditions, the work is marked against the published markscheme, and the hour goes on why each mark was lost. A clinic should produce three things every week: the marked script, a written list of the specific errors, and the next paper to attempt. If all you receive is a score out of the total, it is a test centre and it will not change anything. Clinics suit students who know the content and lose marks on the paper.
For a student with a specific gap, yes; for a student who simply needs pace and structure, often no. Home classes remove travel on a school night, make the session impossible to half-attend, and let the tutor see written method as it happens. A centre batch gives structure, a fixed routine and a much lower cost per hour, and some students work better with other students in the room. Decide by looking at a marked paper: a personal gap points home, a pacing problem points to a batch.
Not well, and it is worth asking before enrolling. The two systems differ in series dates, in grading, and in how practical work is assessed: Cambridge sciences use Paper 5 or Paper 6 for practical, while Edexcel assesses practical skills inside the written papers. Cambridge is tiered in many subjects while Edexcel International GCSE is graded 9 to 1 throughout. A teacher can handle both in one-to-one teaching without difficulty. A group has to pick one, and a group that says it covers both is usually teaching to neither.
A small online group is the format that solves this, and it is the reason online classes exist at all. Indore, Bhopal, Nagpur, Raipur, Jabalpur, Nashik and Goa each have small IGCSE cohorts spread thinly, so a subject at a specific tier may have three interested students in the whole city. Online, a group of six on the same syllabus and tier is entirely possible. Keep one home class a week for any subject where written method needs watching, and run the rest of the week online.
Confirm the series first, then count back about eight weeks. Cambridge series run in February/March, which is offered only in India, May/June and October/November, and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE series run in January and May/June. Schools decide which series a student is entered for, so ask the school rather than assuming. Eight weeks gives room for one full paper per subject, a list of the topics that lost marks, and then timed practice. Starting in the last fortnight buys stress rather than marks.
Rarely, and it is worth being blunt about why. A crash course compresses a syllabus for students who have already met it, so a student with two years of gaps spends the whole course watching material go past. What works better in that position is one-to-one teaching on the highest-weighted parts of the paper, plus a realistic conversation with the school about the tier. Core tops out at grade C in Cambridge subjects, and knowing which tier the student is entered for changes what the remaining weeks should target.
Map the free hours before booking anything. Most Grade 10 students in India have two usable weekday evening slots and one weekend morning after school, activities and travel are counted. A batch in Bandra or Lower Parel is a long school-night journey from Thane or Navi Mumbai, and a centre in Gachibowli or Madhapur is a real trip from Secunderabad. Where travel eats an hour each way, take that subject online and save the home class for the one that needs a tutor in the room.
A batch is enough when the student understands the topics and is simply slow or careless; one-to-one is needed when a specific topic was never learned. The test is the marked paper. If marks are being lost across many topics in small amounts, that is pace and practice, which a group handles well. If a whole question type returns zero every time, a group will move past it again. Many families run 0580 in a batch and add four one-to-one sessions on the two topics that keep failing.
Yes, and ask the question before you enrol. Continuity matters more at IGCSE than families expect, because the teacher who marked September's script is the one who knows which error has repeated four times. A class that rotates teachers loses that memory every time, and the student restarts the explanation. Where a change is unavoidable, ask for the written record of what has been covered and what keeps going wrong to be handed over. If no such record exists, that answer tells you something on its own.
Two is comfortable, three is a stretch, and four means nothing gets corrected. Every home class or online class sets work, and work between sessions is where the improvement actually happens, so four classes a week produce four sets of tasks that a Grade 10 student with school prep cannot complete. Choose the two subjects where the marks lost are largest and most fixable, run those properly, and revisit after six weeks. Families who spread thinly across every subject usually see less movement than those who fix two and leave the rest alone.
Send a query or book a free consultation, and bring the last marked paper, the syllabus codes, the tier and the series your school has entered. IB Gram asks about board, syllabus, level, school calendar, location and schedule, then shortlists verified tutors who match. A trial session can be arranged first, classes run at home, online or hybrid, and you can ask for a different match if the fit is wrong.
