IGCSE Physical Education Tutoring, Aimed at the Written Paper
Almost every family who contacts IB Gram about IGCSE Physical Education arrives with the same discovery: the subject their child chose because they love sport turns out to be half a written examination, and the written half is science. A mock comes back with four-mark questions answered in six words. A student who can play a full ninety minutes cannot name the antagonist in a knee extension. IGCSE Physical Education tutors here work on the theory paper and the written analysis around it — the terminology, the application, the command words — and they do not touch the practical component, because nobody outside the school is allowed to. Sessions run online worldwide in your own time zone; home tutoring exists only in India and only where a tutor has in-person slots free.
How an IGCSE Physical Education Tutor Match Gets Made
Matching begins with four things, and "we need a PE tutor" is not one of them. IB Gram asks which code the school teaches, 0413 or 0995, which grade the student is in, which part of the theory content is causing trouble, and what prompted the enquiry — a mock, a report comment, a subject-change conversation, or a looming examination series. Those answers change which tutor is suggested. Someone who is excellent at rebuilding anatomical vocabulary with a Grade 9 student is not automatically right for a Grade 11 candidate who knows the content and writes two-mark answers to six-mark questions. Two or three tutors then come back with their real background: which boards they have taught PE theory for, whether they have marked extended written answers, how comfortable they are with the psychology and socio-cultural sections, which many tutors treat as an afterthought. The first session is diagnostic. The tutor takes a recent script or a set of past-paper questions, has the student answer a few under something like timed conditions, and works out whether the loss is vocabulary, application, structure or simple not-knowing. That reading is written up and sent after the session, so a parent sees the reasoning rather than a verdict. Fees depend on the tutor's experience, the grade and the frequency of sessions, and are quoted in writing before any booking. If the fit is wrong, the tutor is changed.

Grade 9, Grade 10 and Grade 11 Need Different PE Theory Help
In Grade 9 the useful work is vocabulary and systems, done slowly. Bones, joint classifications, muscle pairs, the path of blood through the heart, the mechanics of inspiration and expiration. None of it is conceptually difficult, and all of it is cumulative: a student who never firmly learned which muscle is the antagonist during elbow flexion will still be guessing two years later when a movement-analysis question is worth six marks. Short, frequent recall work at this stage costs an hour a week and saves a term later. Grade 10 is where the subject broadens and where most families first realise there is a problem. Training principles and training methods arrive, energy systems and recovery arrive, the psychology section arrives with its own vocabulary, and the socio-cultural section asks for argument rather than recall. The productive tutoring here is application drill — take one principle, one performer, one sport, and write the paragraph properly, then do it again with a different sport until the shape is automatic. Grade 11 is examination craft. The theory is mostly known; the marks go to structure, command words, mark allocation and time. Sessions shift towards marked past-paper answers, comparing a student's attempt with the mark scheme line by line, and deciding which topics to secure and which to accept as capped. Students moving in from CBSE, ICSE or another national system usually need a term on written conventions before anything else.
Grade 9: anatomical vocabulary, joint and muscle pairs, cardiovascular and respiratory basics
Grade 10: training principles and methods, energy systems, psychology, socio-cultural argument
Grade 11: timed answers, mark-scheme comparison, command words, deciding what to secure
Students arriving from CBSE, ICSE or a national curriculum start with written conventions
Recall work is short and frequent rather than long and occasional
What Is Actually On the IGCSE Physical Education Theory Paper?
The written paper covers four broad areas of content, and every one of them is examinable in a way that rewards precise language. Anatomy and physiology comes first: the skeletal system and joint types, the major muscle groups and how they work in pairs, the structure and function of the heart and blood vessels, the mechanics of breathing, and the short-term and long-term effects of exercise on all of them. Health, fitness and training follows — components of fitness, fitness testing, the principles of training, methods of training and how a programme is planned across a season. Skill acquisition and psychology brings in skill classification, information processing, guidance and feedback, motivation, arousal and goal setting. The fourth area is social, cultural and ethical: participation barriers, the role of media and sponsorship, sportsmanship and gamesmanship, and performance-enhancing drugs. Two Cambridge codes carry this content. 0413 is the long-standing Physical Education syllabus, and 0995 is the 9-1 graded version of the same subject; schools choose between them mainly on which grading scale they report in. On both routes the written paper accounts for half the qualification and practical performance for the other half, with candidates assessed in four activities drawn from at least two of seven activity categories. Paper length and mark totals have changed between syllabus cycles, so confirm the current version with your school.
0413 — Cambridge IGCSE Physical Education, A*-G grading
0995 — Cambridge IGCSE (9-1) Physical Education, same subject on the 9-1 scale
Theory: anatomy and physiology; health, fitness and training; skill acquisition and psychology; social, cultural and ethical influences
Practical: four activities from at least two of seven categories, assessed in school
Written paper and practical performance each carry half the qualification
Pearson's PE qualification is a UK GCSE rather than an International GCSE, so overseas schools usually run the Cambridge route
Where IGCSE PE Tutoring Happens, in India and Overseas
Online tutoring is available worldwide and runs in your own time zone, which matters more in this subject than in most, because PE theory specialists are thinly spread. A family in Doha or Kuala Lumpur looking for someone who can genuinely teach the socio-cultural section is not realistically going to find that person within driving distance. Tutors are based in India and are commonly scheduled across the offset for families in the Gulf, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Nairobi, Lagos, Accra, the UK and Europe, where Physical Education is a well-established IGCSE option in international and British-curriculum schools. Inside India, home tutoring depends entirely on current tutor availability near you. The international-school clusters where requests concentrate are Gurugram along Golf Course Road and through DLF Phases 1 to 5, Sushant Lok and Sectors 43, 50 and 56; South and South-West Delhi around Vasant Vihar, Vasant Kunj and Saket; Noida Sectors 44, 50 and 62 and the Expressway; Mumbai across Bandra, Juhu, BKC and South Mumbai; Bangalore around Indiranagar, Koramangala, HSR and the Sarjapur and Whitefield corridors; and the established school belts of Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai. Said plainly: home tutoring does not exist everywhere in India, there is no centre or branch anywhere to visit, and outside India tutoring is online only. If nothing is free near you, you will be told, not kept waiting.

Working Alongside the PE Department, Not Around It
The school owns this subject more completely than it owns most others. The department chooses the activity categories offered, runs the practical assessment, records the marks and submits them for moderation. It also sets the order in which theory topics are taught, and that order varies far more between schools in PE than it does in, say, a mathematics scheme. A tutor who begins teaching periodisation in October when the class is still on joint types creates confusion for no gain. So sessions start from what the department is actually doing: the current unit, the last marked assessment, the teacher's written comments, and the school's own booklets, which in PE are often the real syllabus in practice. Where the department's way of structuring an extended answer works, the tutor reinforces that structure rather than introducing a competing one. Where a student has clearly been taught a definition loosely, the tutor says so in writing so the parent knows a deliberate correction is being made. On assessed work the line is absolute. Tutors coach. They do not write, complete, draft or co-author any coursework, written assignment, analysis task or assessed piece, and they will refuse plainly if asked. In a subject where practical marks are teacher-assessed and externally moderated, there is also nothing a private tutor can legitimately do to influence them, and any tutor implying otherwise is describing something that does not exist.
Follow the department's teaching order, not a generic topic sequence
School booklets and marked work are the starting point for each session
Reinforce the department's answer structure where it is working
Coaching only — tutors never write or co-author coursework or assessed work
Nothing a private tutor does can influence teacher-assessed, moderated practical marks
Can a Tutor Help With the Practical Component?
No, and it is worth saying that at the top rather than at the bottom. The practical half of IGCSE Physical Education is performed in the student's own activities, assessed by their own teachers against published criteria, and moderated by the board. An outside tutor cannot observe it, cannot assess it, cannot mark it and cannot influence it. If a student needs to improve at badminton or athletics, that is a coach's job at a club or in school, and IB Gram will say so rather than sell a session it cannot deliver. What a tutor works on is the written paper and written analysis. For that, online is the strong default. Screen sharing suits this subject unusually well: a diagram of the cardiovascular system annotated live, a student's own answer pulled up next to the mark scheme, a shared document where a paragraph is rebuilt sentence by sentence while the student watches which words earn marks. Past-paper answers can be typed, marked and rewritten inside one session. Home tutoring is offered in India only, and only where a tutor currently has in-person slots near you. It helps most with younger students who drift on a screen, and with students whose real difficulty is that they will not write anything unless someone is sitting there. Many Grade 11 families settle on a hybrid pattern: weekly online, occasional in person near mocks.
The practical component is school-assessed and board-moderated — no tutor can touch it
Improving at a sport is a coach's job, not a subject tutor's
Online suits theory well: diagrams annotated live, answers rebuilt beside the mark scheme
Home tutoring is India-only and depends on a tutor having slots near you
Hybrid is common in Grade 11: regular online plus in-person sessions around mocks
A free trial lesson before you commit, and the mode can change later
One-to-One PE Theory Tutoring Compared With the Alternatives
Families weighing up support for IGCSE Physical Education are usually choosing between a private theory tutor, whatever the school department can spare, a group batch at a local coaching centre, and free revision videos. These are categories, not named providers, and the honest differences sit in who reads the student's written answers and who is allowed anywhere near the practical marks.
| What matters | One-to-one theory tutor (IB Gram) | School PE department | Coaching-centre group batch | Recorded revision videos |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Practical component | Not covered at all, and said so upfront — it is school-assessed and moderated | Owns it entirely: teaches, assesses and submits the marks | Cannot assess it either, though some imply otherwise | Not applicable |
| Extended written answers marked | Marked against the scheme and rewritten with the student in session | Marked, but turnaround depends on the department's teaching load | Rarely individual; usually whole-class model answers | None — a video cannot read what the student wrote |
| Anatomical and technical vocabulary | Drilled in short recall sets and tested in written context | Taught in class, revision left to the student | Covered at batch pace, regardless of who already knows it | Presented clearly, but nothing checks retention |
| Applying training theory to a named performer | Practised repeatedly with sports the student actually plays | Covered in class examples, often the same two or three | Generic examples that suit the batch | Worked examples only, not the student's own attempts |
| Psychology and socio-cultural sections | Covered deliberately, because they are where weak answers cluster | Depends heavily on the individual teacher's confidence | Often compressed in favour of anatomy | Usually the thinnest part of the playlist |
| Written record for parents | A note after every session naming the weakness worked on | Reports and parent meetings on the school calendar | Typically a periodic test score | Watch-time dashboards, not diagnosis |
| Cost basis | Quoted in writing for that specific match; no published rate | Included in school fees | A fixed batch fee per term | Free or low-cost subscription |
What Gets Checked Before a PE Theory Tutor Is Matched
A sports background alone does not qualify anyone to teach this paper, and IB Gram treats that as the central risk in the subject. Plenty of capable coaches know training methods inside out from practice and have never written an examination answer about periodisation in their lives. So before a tutor is put in front of an IGCSE candidate, their actual teaching history with PE theory is confirmed — which board, which code, which grades, over how long. The practical check is a written one. A prospective tutor is given past-paper questions across the four content areas, including at least one extended question from the psychology or socio-cultural section, and asked both to answer them and to mark a sample student response against the scheme. Tutors who can only teach anatomy and go quiet on arousal, feedback or commercialisation are not matched for full-course support, because those sections carry marks too and are commonly where a student's weakest answers sit. Identity and qualifications are verified. Explanation quality is weighed separately from subject depth, because a tutor who knows the content but cannot get a reluctant writer to produce four sentences is no use here. After matching, continued work depends on what families report and on the quality of the written session notes. None of that is a promise about a grade. It is a filter, and it is why the list you receive is short.
PE theory teaching history verified by board, code and grade level — not sports credentials alone
A live task: answer past-paper questions and mark a sample script against the scheme
Coverage checked across all four content areas, psychology and socio-cultural included
Identity, qualifications and teaching record confirmed
Ongoing matching depends on family feedback and the usefulness of written notes
The Surprise That Brings Most Families to This Page
Students pick Physical Education because they are already good at sport and expect the subject to reward that. Then Grade 10 arrives, a textbook turns up with labelled diagrams of the heart and the shoulder joint in it, and the family finds out that half the qualification is an examination sat in a hall with a pen. The distance between what was expected and what is actually assessed is where nearly all PE distress begins, and it has very little to do with fitness or ability on a pitch. The written side of Cambridge IGCSE Physical Education behaves like a junior sports-science course. It asks candidates to name skeletal and muscular structures precisely, to reason about how the circulatory and respiratory systems respond when a performer starts running, to classify levers and describe movement at a joint, to apply training principles to one specific athlete, to discuss arousal and motivation in psychological language, and to argue about sponsorship, media coverage and the barriers that keep certain groups out of sport. Strong athletes who are reluctant writers find that combination genuinely hard, and they usually find out late. This page is about tutoring for that written half. It is honest about what a tutor can reach and what sits entirely inside the school.
Chosen as a practical subject, assessed substantially as a written one
The theory content is anatomical, physiological, psychological and sociological
Athletic ability does not transfer automatically into examination marks
Tutors work on theory and written technique only
Most families notice the problem after a Grade 10 mock, not before
Terminology, Levers and the Way PE Marks Really Disappear
Look at a marked PE script and the losses fall into three recognisable piles. The first is vocabulary. A candidate writes "the muscle at the back of the lower leg" where the mark scheme wants gastrocnemius, or "the shoulder bends" where it wants flexion at a ball and socket joint. Everyday description is not wrong, exactly, but it does not earn the point. The subject runs on a fixed technical register — agonist and antagonist, flexion and extension, abduction and adduction, isotonic and isometric contraction, first, second and third class levers, tidal volume, stroke volume, oxygen debt — and marks attach to the register rather than to the idea behind it. The second pile is application. Questions rarely ask what a principle is; they ask what it looks like for a named performer. A question about progressive overload for a sprinter wants a sprinter's training in the answer, not a definition with the word sprinter bolted on the end. Candidates who revise definitions and never rehearse applying them lose marks on exactly the questions they thought they had prepared for. The third is command words and mark allocation. "Describe" wants features, "explain" wants a consequence linked back to performance, "evaluate" wants both sides and a judgement. A four-mark question answered in one line is a self-inflicted wound, and it is the most repeatable thing a tutor can fix.
Technical register beats everyday description: gastrocnemius, not calf muscle
Movement analysis: joint type, articulating bones, agonist and antagonist, plane of movement
Levers: identify the class, then say what it means for force or range of movement
Every principle must be applied to a named performer or a named activity
Read the mark allocation: four marks means four creditable statements, not one long sentence
Describe, explain, analyse, evaluate and justify are instructions with different answer shapes
What a Parent Should Be Able to See by Week Four
After a month there should be paperwork, not impressions. A written note from each session naming the topic and the specific weakness worked on. A diagnosis from the first session that the later notes keep referring back to. And, crucially for this subject, at least one extended written answer the student produced, with the tutor's marking on it and the mark scheme's wording beside the student's wording. If none of that exists, the tutoring is not being run properly, whatever the student says about enjoying the sessions. What cannot be offered is a grade. No honest platform promises a 7, an A or a 9, and a tutor who does is managing the parent rather than the student. What is reasonable to expect by week four is narrower and more checkable: the student uses technical terms without prompting, applies a training principle to a named performer without being reminded to, and writes four separate points when a question is worth four marks. Expect the length of answers to rise before the marks do. Students who have been writing one-line responses often go through a phase of writing too much, and it reads like a step backwards for a fortnight before the structure tightens. A tutor who mentions that in advance in a session note is doing the job correctly.
A written note after each session, from the very first one
One named diagnosis that the later notes visibly follow up
At least one extended answer marked against the real scheme
Technical vocabulary used unprompted; principles applied to named performers
No grade promises from IB Gram or from any tutor working through it
Starting IGCSE Physical Education Support This Term
A useful first message is short and factual. "Grade 10, Cambridge 0995, mock came back at a low grade, lost most marks on movement analysis and the psychology section, sitting the May series" is enough to match properly. "Needs a PE tutor" costs two more exchanges to reach the same place, and those exchanges cost days when a mock is three weeks out. If you have a marked script, photograph it and send it. In this subject a marked script tells a tutor more in two minutes than a phone call does in twenty, because the pattern of losses is visible immediately: blank extended questions, one-line answers to four-mark items, everyday vocabulary where the scheme wanted anatomical terms. It also prevents the first paid session being spent finding out what is already written down. Tutor backgrounds and the rate for that specific match are shared in writing before anything is booked. There is no published price list, because the fee depends on the tutor's experience and tier, the grade and how often sessions run. The first lesson is a free trial. IGCSE tutoring FAQs
Is IGCSE Physical Education an easy option?+
It is not, and the belief that it is causes most of the trouble in the subject. Half of Cambridge IGCSE Physical Education is a written examination covering anatomy and physiology, health and training, skill acquisition and psychology, and social and ethical influences on sport. That content has its own technical vocabulary and its own answer conventions. A student who plays sport at a high level but writes short, vague, non-technical answers will score poorly on the paper regardless of how good they are on a pitch or in a pool.
How much of IGCSE PE is a written exam rather than sport?+
On the Cambridge routes, 0413 and 0995, the written theory paper carries half the qualification and practical performance carries the other half. Candidates are assessed in four physical activities drawn from at least two of seven activity categories, assessed in school and moderated by the board. Paper duration and mark totals have changed across syllabus cycles, so check the version your school is teaching. The practical point for parents is simple: strong practical marks cannot rescue a weak theory paper, because neither half is large enough to carry the other.
Can an IB Gram tutor help with the practical component?+
No. The practical component is performed in the student's own activities, assessed by their own teachers against published criteria and then moderated by the awarding body. A private tutor cannot observe it, assess it, mark it or influence it in any way, and anyone claiming otherwise is describing something that does not exist. If the practical marks are the weak side, the answer is a coach, a club or more time with the PE department. IB Gram tutors work on the theory paper and the written work around it.
Which code does my child take, 0413 or 0995?+
Check the school's course outline or the header of a recent assessment, where the four-digit code is usually printed. Cambridge IGCSE Physical Education 0413 reports on the A*-G scale and Cambridge IGCSE (9-1) Physical Education 0995 reports on the 9-1 scale; the subject content is the same, so the choice is mainly about the grading scale a school reports in. If you are unsure, photograph a worksheet header or the front of the textbook and send it, and IB Gram will identify the route before matching anyone.
My child plays three sports but is failing PE theory. Why?+
Because the examination tests a written register rather than sporting competence, and those two things are almost unrelated. A player knows intuitively that a sprint start feels different from a long run, but the paper wants anaerobic and aerobic energy systems named, oxygen debt explained and the effect on performance stated. Playing sport builds no habit of writing four distinct creditable points for a four-mark question. That habit is teachable in weeks, which is why a diagnostic look at a marked script is usually more useful than more content revision.
How much anatomy terminology does the theory paper really need?+
Enough that everyday description consistently loses marks. Students are expected to name major bones and muscles, classify joints and the movement that occurs at them, identify agonist and antagonist pairs, distinguish types of muscle contraction, and describe the structures of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems accurately. Writing "the muscle at the back of the thigh" where the scheme wants the hamstring group does not earn the point. Tutoring for this looks like short, frequent recall practice rather than long sessions, and it works best begun in Grade 9 or early Grade 10.
Is the anatomy in IGCSE PE the same as the anatomy in IGCSE Biology?+
There is overlap in the structures named, but the questions are asked for a different purpose and rewarded differently. PE approaches the body as a performing system: what happens to stroke volume during exercise, which muscle acts as antagonist in a named sporting movement, what class of lever operates at a joint during a throw, how the body recovers after anaerobic work. Answers are expected to end in a consequence for performance. A student who revises PE with biology notes tends to produce accurate descriptions that never connect to sport, and those score badly.
What does applying the principles of training to a named performer mean?+
It means the answer has to contain that performer's actual training, not a definition with their name attached. If a question gives you a middle-distance runner and asks about progressive overload, the credit sits in describing how their weekly distance or interval intensity increases across a block, and why that produces adaptation. Specificity, overload, reversibility, recovery and periodisation are all examined this way. Candidates who revise these as definitions and never write them out for a real sport lose marks on the questions they believed they had prepared for.
Can a tutor write or help complete written coursework or a training programme?+
No. Tutors coach and never write, complete, draft or co-author any assessed piece, whether that is a written analysis, a personal training programme, a portfolio task or an assignment the school submits. What a tutor will do is teach the underlying theory, discuss the structure a good response has, explain where the student's own draft is thin, and mark practice work that is not being submitted. If a tutor is asked to produce assessed work, they will decline plainly and say why.
How much does an IGCSE Physical Education tutor cost?+
There is no published price list. The fee depends on the tutor's experience and tier, the student's grade, and how frequently sessions run, because a Grade 11 candidate being prepared for an examination series is a different job from Grade 9 vocabulary building. The rate for a specific suggested tutor is confirmed in writing before you book anything, so you are comparing a real number rather than a bracket. Ask for it in the first exchange; any tutor unwilling to state a figure before the trial lesson is worth a second look.
Can we get a home tutor for PE theory, or is it online only?+
Online is available worldwide and is the common arrangement. Home tutoring is offered in India only, and only where a tutor currently has in-person slots near you — requests concentrate around Gurugram, South and South-West Delhi, Noida, Mumbai, Bandra and BKC, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai. Availability moves as tutors' schedules change, and you will be told directly if nothing is free rather than left waiting. For PE theory, online is not a compromise: annotating a diagram and rebuilding a written answer beside the mark scheme works well on a shared screen.
We live in Dubai, Singapore or Hong Kong. How do the timings work?+
Tutors are based in India, and sessions are scheduled in your own local time rather than Indian time. Families across the Gulf, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, East and West Africa, the UK and Europe are scheduled by working across the time offset, so a slot that is early morning or late evening in India often lands in ordinary after-school hours where you are. Send your city and time zone in the first message and a specific weekly slot is proposed in your hours. Outside India, tutoring is online only.
How many sessions a week does IGCSE PE theory need?+
One focused session a week is a sensible baseline through Grade 9 and Grade 10, assuming the student does short recall practice in between. Two a week is common in Grade 11, usually split into one teaching session and one where a past-paper answer is written, marked and rebuilt. Beyond two, the limiting factor is usually the student's own written practice rather than contact hours, and a tutor should say that rather than fill more slots. Frequency is reviewed once the first diagnosis is written up.
Does IGCSE Physical Education lead anywhere after Grade 11?+
It does, and more directly than families often assume. The theory content is a genuine grounding for A Level Physical Education, for BTEC Sport routes, and for IB Diploma Sports, Exercise and Health Science, all of which extend the same anatomy, training and psychology material at greater depth. Beyond school it feeds sports science, coaching, sports management and physiotherapy pathways. Universities and sixth forms set their own entry requirements, so confirm what your target school or course expects rather than assuming the subject alone is sufficient.
How do you show progress if you will not promise a grade?+
Through marked written work and session notes rather than predictions. After each session a note records what was covered and what the student got wrong; across a month those notes should show the same named weaknesses closing. For this subject the key artefact is a set of extended answers marked against the real scheme, where you can see length, vocabulary and structure changing. Nobody can honestly guarantee a 7, an A or a 9 in any subject, and any tutor offering one is telling you what you want to hear.
Is IB Gram affiliated with Cambridge International or any awarding body?+
No. IB Gram is an independent tutoring platform and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or partnered with Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel, Oxford AQA or the IB Organization. Codes such as 0413 and 0995 are named only to describe accurately which syllabus a tutor works on. The awarding body remains the sole authority on syllabus content, assessment structure, activity categories and moderation rules, and details change between syllabus cycles, so confirm anything that matters with your school or directly with the board.
Ready to plan IGCSE support?
If a Grade 10 mock came back badly, or your child chose Physical Education as a sport subject and has just met the theory paper, send the code, the grade, the topic area that is going wrong and the examination series you are working towards. A photograph of a marked script helps more than a long description. Tutor backgrounds and the rate for that match are shared in writing first, the trial lesson is free, and the tutor can be changed if the fit is not right. Write to ibgram24@gmail.com, or send a WhatsApp message to +91 7439 368 115, adding your city and time zone if you are outside India.
