IGCSE Italian Tutoring, From the First Verbs to the Speaking Test
Italian is unusually kind at the start and unusually strict later, and that is normally why a family ends up here. The alphabet behaves, the vowels never wander, and a student who has been reading Italian for three months can pronounce a page aloud with reasonable accuracy. Then the verbs arrive, and with them the choice between ho parlato and parlavo, the choice between essere and avere, the congiuntivo, and a set of small words - del, nel, sul, dalla - that carry no direct English equivalent and quietly drain marks from otherwise decent writing. IB Gram matches Grade 9 to Grade 11 students with a tutor who has taught the exact route the school enters, because IGCSE Italian is a small-cohort subject and a generic language tutor is not the same thing as an Italian specialist.
How an IGCSE Italian Tutor Match Is Actually Put Together
Four answers decide the match, and none of them is the word Italian on its own. Which code is the school entering - 0535 or 7164? What grade is the student in, and how many terms remain before the written papers? Is there Italian spoken at home, and if so, from which region, because a student raised on Neapolitan or Venetian speech at home brings different strengths and different spelling habits than one who learned entirely in a classroom. And finally, what actually triggered the search: a returned piece of writing covered in red, a listening mock that collapsed, a speaking test on the calendar, or a general sense that the verbs got away from everyone in Grade 10. Two or three tutors then come back with the routes they have taught, the kind of students they work best with, and their rate in writing. The first lesson is a free trial and is deliberately diagnostic. The tutor will ask for a short piece of the student's own Italian writing, read it aloud with them, and mark it live - because the difference between a student who cannot form the passato prossimo and one who forms it correctly but picks the wrong auxiliary is invisible from a grade alone, and the two need entirely different terms of work. A written note follows every session, naming what was covered and what went wrong, so a parent is looking at evidence rather than at reassurance. If the fit is wrong, say so and the tutor is changed.
Send the code the school enters: 0535, or 7164 if you are in the UK
Say whether Italian is spoken at home, and roughly where the speaker is from
First session is diagnostic: the student's own writing, read aloud and marked live
Rates quoted in writing before booking; fees vary with tutor experience, grade and frequency
Written note after every session; tutor changed if the match does not settle
Grade 9, Grade 10 and Grade 11 Need Different Italian Work
In Grade 9 the productive work is phonetic and structural, and it is duller than parents expect. Getting c and g right before e and i, so that ciao and chiesa are never confused; hearing and writing double consonants deliberately; learning which article each noun takes, including lo before s plus consonant, z, gn and ps, so that lo studente, lo zaino and gli gnocchi stop being guesses. A student who leaves Grade 9 with secure gender assignment and reliable present-tense conjugations has removed most of the ceiling from the two years that follow. Grade 10 is the verb year. The compound past, the imperfect, the future and conditional, reflexives, and the pronoun system all land within a few months of each other, and this is where students most often report that Italian stopped making sense. The useful tutoring here is narrow and repetitive: short narrative paragraphs written and rewritten until auxiliary choice and participle agreement stop being decisions and become reflexes. This is also where combined pronouns arrive - me lo, te la, ce ne, glielo, gliene - and where a student needs to be told plainly that gli plus lo is written as one word and covers him, her and them alike. Grade 11 is exam craft and speaking nerve. Timed writing to the required length, listening under a single unforgiving playback, and rehearsed spontaneity for the oral: opinions the student can hold in Italian, not opinions translated in the moment.
Grade 9: sound-to-spelling, double consonants, noun gender, article choice, present tense
Grade 10: compound past, imperfect, reflexives, pronouns, the start of the congiuntivo
Grade 11: timed writing, listening at speed, and rehearsed speaking with real opinions
Heritage speakers are streamed differently: accuracy and register, not comprehension
Students joining mid-course get a short bridging plan before any past-paper work
What Sits Inside IGCSE Italian: 0535, 7164 and What They Assess
Cambridge IGCSE Italian - Foreign Language carries the code 0535 and is the route almost every international school outside the UK uses. Cambridge also runs a 9-1 graded Italian at 7164, which is a UK-only qualification; if your school is in Dubai, Mumbai or Singapore you are nearly certainly on 0535, and if you are in an English independent school you may well be on 7164. Naming the code in your first message saves a term of misdirected work, because past papers, mark schemes and grading language differ between the two. Both routes assess the same four capabilities: understanding spoken Italian, understanding written Italian, producing written Italian, and speaking it. Cambridge sets the reading and listening assessment so that answers are given in Italian rather than English, which catches out students who understood the passage perfectly and then wrote an answer whose verb ending gave away that they had not. Dictionaries are not permitted. The spoken component is conducted at the school and moderated externally, and precisely how and when your school runs it varies - some run it months before the written papers, some in the same window. Ask the school for its date early, because a speaking test is the one part of this subject you cannot revise for in the last fortnight. The topic areas are the familiar everyday ones - self and family, school, town and travel, work, health, environment - but the Italian marks live in accuracy, not in topic coverage.
0535 - Cambridge IGCSE Italian - Foreign Language, the standard international route
7164 - Cambridge IGCSE Italian (9-1), a UK-only qualification with 9-1 grading
Written answers are given in Italian; dictionaries are not allowed in the exam
A spoken component conducted in school and externally moderated; confirm the date with the school
Ask your school which route it enters, and whether Italian is examined internally in earlier grades
Where IGCSE Italian Is Studied, in India and Abroad
Inside India, Italian at IGCSE is a niche choice, and pretending otherwise would waste your time. Most Indian international schools offer French, Spanish or German as the second language and Hindi as the first; Italian usually appears because a family has asked for it, because a student is preparing for study or relocation in Italy, or because there is Italian at home. Where families do come to us, they are concentrated in Gurugram around Golf Course Road and DLF Phases 1 to 5, in South Delhi around Vasant Vihar and Vasant Kunj, in Mumbai across Bandra, Juhu and BKC, and in Bangalore around Indiranagar and Sarjapur, with steady enquiries from Pune and Chennai. Home tutoring in any of those cities depends on who is currently free, and for Italian the honest answer is often that nobody is. Abroad the picture is different. Italian is a normal school subject in Italy itself and in Italian-speaking Switzerland around Lugano and Bellinzona. There are Italian schools and long-settled Italian communities across the Gulf, and international schools in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha where Italian runs as an option alongside the usual languages. Add the UK, where 7164 is entered, and families in Singapore, Hong Kong and Bangkok whose children take Italian because one parent is Italian. All of it is served online, in local hours. Sessions for European families typically sit in their late afternoon, which is late evening in India.
Online worldwide in your own time zone - how most IGCSE Italian tutoring here happens
India: Gurugram, South Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune and Chennai, with thin in-person cover
Italy and Italian-speaking Switzerland: Milan, Rome, Turin, Bologna, Lugano
Gulf international schools: Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha and Muscat
UK schools on the 7164 route, plus Singapore, Hong Kong and Bangkok
Working Alongside the School's Italian Scheme, Not Against It
A tutor's job is to fit the school's sequence, not to replace it. That matters more in a small-cohort language than in a big one, because Italian is frequently taught by a single teacher with one class per year group, and that teacher's ordering of the syllabus is the only ordering the student will encounter. If the school has spent the term on the imperfect and has not yet introduced the congiuntivo, a tutor who charges ahead into subjunctive triggers creates confusion in class rather than an advantage. So the practical asks are simple: the scheme of work or term plan if you have it, the last two pieces of marked Italian with the teacher's comments intact, and the school's date for the spoken assessment. That last one shapes everything. If the speaking test is in eleven weeks, the weekly session structure changes immediately - more unscripted talk, more question-handling, less silent grammar drilling. On assessed work the line is not negotiable. Tutors coach. They will plan an answer with a student, mark a draft, explain why an auxiliary is wrong and make the student redo it, and rehearse an oral by asking harder questions than the examiner will. They do not write, rewrite, translate or co-author anything that goes to the school or to Cambridge as the student's own work, and they will decline if asked. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel or the IB.
Send the scheme of work and two recent marked pieces with the teacher's comments
Ask the school for the spoken assessment date and share it early
Tutoring follows the school's sequence rather than running a parallel course
Tutors coach and rehearse; they never write or co-author work that is submitted
Independent platform - no affiliation with Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel or the IB
Online, at Home or a Mix - Which Works Better for Italian?
For Italian, online is genuinely the main option, and not as a consolation. This is a small-cohort subject: the number of tutors anywhere in India who have actually taught Cambridge 0535 to exam is not large, and insisting on someone who can physically reach your house usually means accepting a general Italian teacher rather than an IGCSE Italian specialist. Online sessions run worldwide in your own family's time zone. The subject also happens to suit a screen unusually well. Speaking practice is the core activity, and a video call is a video call. Listening practice needs shared audio with the ability to stop, replay a two-second fragment and ask whether the student heard a single or a double consonant - easier with a screen and headphones than with a laptop turned sideways on a dining table. Written work is marked live on a shared document, with the tutor colour-coding agreement errors separately from tense errors, so the student can see which of their two problems is the bigger one. Home tutoring is offered only in India, and only in cities where a tutor is currently taking in-person students. For Italian specifically, that availability is thin and changes term to term. There is no centre or branch anywhere. A hybrid pattern works for some families: occasional in-person sessions where a tutor happens to be available, with the regular weekly work online.
Online worldwide, in your own time zone, and the only mode available outside India
Home tutoring is India-only, city-dependent, and genuinely scarce for Italian
Shared audio and replay control make consonant-length listening drills practical online
Speaking preparation loses nothing on video; the oral itself is run by your school
Hybrid is possible in a few Indian cities but should not be assumed when you enquire
One-to-One Italian Tutoring Compared With the Alternatives
Italian is a small-cohort IGCSE, which changes the comparison. The question is rarely which option is cheapest; it is which option can put a student in front of somebody who has actually taught Cambridge 0535 or 7164 to examination, and who will hear a missing double consonant when the student reads aloud.
| What matters | IB Gram one-to-one | Coaching-centre batch | Recorded or app course | School Italian lessons |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Finding an Italian specialist | Matched from a pool by route taught, not by postcode | Rare outside a handful of cities; usually French or Spanish only | Plentiful, but built for general learners rather than a Cambridge route | Often one teacher for the whole year group, with no alternative |
| Speaking rehearsal | Unscripted, with unprepared follow-up questions each week | Split across a group, so minutes per student are short | Speech-recognition drills; no examiner-style follow-up | Depends on class size and timetable pressure |
| Double consonants and listening | Fragment replay and dictation until sete and sette separate | Whole-class audio at one pace | Playback exists; nobody checks what was actually heard | Covered in class, rarely drilled to automaticity |
| Written accuracy marking | Agreement, tense and preposition errors marked as separate classes | Batch marking with a common answer key | Automated marking that misses participle agreement entirely | Thorough, but turnaround is set by the teacher's whole workload |
| Congiuntivo and tense choice | Diagnosed from the student's own writing, then drilled to that gap | Taught to the group's average level | Explained in a lesson; not diagnosed in your child | Taught in the school's sequence, which a tutor should follow |
| Heritage speakers | Streamed to accuracy and register rather than comprehension | Usually placed by grade, so the student is bored | Beginner-weighted content that fluent speakers abandon | Handled well by some teachers, unevenly by others |
| Fees and scheduling | Quoted in writing before booking; scheduled in your time zone | Fixed term fee, fixed batch timing | Low monthly cost, no accountability | Included in school fees |
What Is Checked Before an Italian Tutor Is Matched to a Student
Fluency in Italian is the entry requirement, not the qualification. Plenty of people speak excellent Italian and cannot explain why il film e finito takes essere while ho finito il film takes avere, which is exactly the explanation a Grade 10 student needs at the moment they ask. So the checks go past the language itself. We look at which Italian routes the tutor has actually taught to examination, and whether that includes 0535 or 7164 rather than only adult conversation courses or the CILS and PLIDA proficiency certificates, which are separate things entirely. We check that they can mark against a Cambridge mark scheme - meaning they can say which error class cost which mark, not simply circle it. We check they can run a speaking rehearsal that is harder than the real thing, including follow-up questions the student has not prepared for. And we check their teaching of the two areas students most often meet badly explained: articulated prepositions and combined pronouns. For heritage speakers we look for something extra: a tutor who can correct written Italian without making a bilingual teenager feel their family's Italian is wrong. Regional and colloquial forms are not errors in life; they are simply not what the mark scheme rewards, and a good tutor can hold both of those ideas at once. Trial lessons then decide it, because a match that looks right on paper sometimes is not.
Routes actually taught to exam - 0535 or 7164, not adult conversation courses alone
Ability to mark to a Cambridge scheme and name the error class behind each lost mark
Can explain auxiliary choice, participle agreement and preposition fusion in plain terms
Runs unscripted speaking rehearsals with unprepared follow-up questions
Handles heritage speakers without dismissing the Italian spoken at home
Free trial lesson is part of the check, not a formality
Why Families Come Looking for IGCSE Italian Tutors
The reasons cluster into four groups, and they need different tutors. The first is relocation: a parent has taken a post in Milan, Turin, Bologna or Italian-speaking Ticino, the school has put the child into Italian as a foreign language, and the family wants the gap closed before the first assessment lands. The second is heritage. One parent speaks Italian at home, the student understands everything at the dinner table and can chat happily, and then writes an essay in which every article, adjective and past participle disagrees with the noun it belongs to. Fluent ears and untrained spelling are a real combination in this subject, not a contradiction. The third group is pathway-driven. A student is aiming at design, architecture, art history, conservation, opera or fashion, and has worked out that the interesting institutions for those fields sit in Italy and teach a good deal of their content in Italian. The fourth is simply availability: the school offered Italian, the student picked it, and there is nobody in the house who can check whether the homework is right. Worth saying plainly at the top: Italian is a smaller IGCSE cohort than French, Spanish or German. Fewer schools teach it, fewer tutors specialise in it, and the honest consequence is that a specialist is usually reached online rather than found down the road.
Relocation to Italy or Italian-speaking Switzerland, mid-course
Heritage speakers who talk fluently and write with broken agreement
Students targeting design, architecture, art history, conservation or music routes
Families whose school offers Italian but who cannot check the work at home
Students switching in from a different second language and needing a fast foundation
Where Are the Marks Actually Lost in IGCSE Italian?
Mostly in four places, and none of them is vocabulary. The first is the articulated preposition. Italian fuses a preposition with the definite article that follows it: di plus il becomes del, in plus la becomes nella, su plus i becomes sui, da plus lo becomes dallo, a plus le becomes alle. There are five common prepositions and seven article forms, and English offers the student no equivalent instinct to fall back on. Students who write in il centro instead of nel centro, or di la citta instead of della citta, lose a mark at a time across an entire piece of writing, and almost never see it happening. The second is the double consonant. Italian spelling is phonetic in the sense that the letters tell you the sounds, and that includes consonant length. Nonno is a grandfather and nono is ninth; cappello is a hat and capello is a single hair; copia is a copy and coppia is a couple; sete is thirst and sette is seven; sono means I am and sonno means sleep. This costs marks twice over - once in writing, where the wrong word appears, and once in listening, where a student who has never been drilled on consonant length simply does not hear the difference at exam speed. The third is agreement across the whole noun phrase: article, noun, adjective and, in the compound past, the participle. The fourth is knowing when the congiuntivo is required.
Articulated prepositions: del, nel, sul, alla, dalla - five prepositions, seven article forms
Double consonants that change meaning: nonno and nono, cappello and capello, copia and coppia
Agreement chains: le mie amiche italiane sono arrivate, every word carrying the same feminine plural
Tense choice and mood choice, which cost far more than unknown vocabulary
False friends: libreria is a bookshop, parenti are relatives, morbido means soft
The Verb System Is Where Italian Stops Being Easy
Everything that makes Italian encouraging for beginners is still true in Grade 11. The problem is that a different set of demands has arrived on top of it. The compound past is built from an auxiliary plus a participle, and the first decision is which auxiliary: ho mangiato but sono andato, ho dormito but sono uscito. Verbs of movement and of change of state take essere, all reflexives take essere, and with essere the participle agrees with the subject - Maria e andata, le ragazze sono partite, mi sono lavata. Several verbs switch auxiliary depending on whether they carry an object: ho finito il libro, but il film e finito. With avere the participle normally sits unchanged, which is what students learn first. Then a preceding direct-object pronoun turns up and the participle has to agree with it: l'ho vista, le ho comprate, li ho letti. That rule is quietly worth several marks a paper and is the one heritage speakers get wrong most often, because in conversation nobody is listening for it. Then there is the choice between passato prossimo and imperfetto - what happened, against what was going on, what things were like, and what used to happen repeatedly. Mentre leggevo, e suonato il telefono is a single sentence carrying both. Students who translate tense-by-tense from English produce narratives in which everything happened once and nothing had any background.
Auxiliary choice: essere for movement, change of state and all reflexives; avere for most others
Participle agreement with the subject under essere: siamo arrivati, siamo arrivate
Participle agreement with a preceding object pronoun under avere: l'ho vista, le ho viste
Passato prossimo for events, imperfetto for background, description and habit
Congiuntivo triggers: penso che, spero che, benche, prima che, e importante che
The hypothetical pattern se avessi tempo, verrei - imperfect subjunctive with a conditional
What a Parent Should Be Able to See by Week Four
Not a grade. Four weeks is roughly sixteen to twenty hours of contact at most, and in a language that is nowhere near enough to move a band. What it is enough for is a visible change in the shape of the mistakes, and that is what you should be checking. By week four you should have four written notes that name specific things rather than general ones - not that the student needs more practice, but that the student is now choosing essere correctly for movement verbs and still defaulting to avere on reflexives. You should have at least one piece of the student's Italian marked twice, before and after, so you can see the same paragraph with fewer agreement errors in it. You should be able to ask your child what an articulated preposition is and get an answer with an example, because if they cannot name it they are not yet fixing it. And you should hear them speak. Ask them to describe their weekend in Italian for ninety seconds. Early on it will be short, present tense and hesitant. By week four it should contain at least one compound past and one imperfect, and the hesitation should be them choosing a word rather than assembling the sentence from scratch. No tutor can honestly promise a grade, a band or an outcome in a spoken assessment, and anyone offering that is selling comfort.
Four written notes that name error classes, not effort levels
One paragraph marked twice, before and after, showing fewer agreement slips
The student can explain nel and della with an example of their own
Ninety seconds of spoken Italian that now mixes past tenses
No promises about grades, bands or the outcome of the speaking test
Starting IGCSE Italian Tutoring This Week
The quickest start is a first message that answers the questions we would otherwise have to ask. Give the code the school enters, 0535 or 7164, and if you genuinely do not know, photograph the front of a worksheet or the course outline and send that instead - the code is usually printed on it. Give the grade, the school and its country, and your time zone, because Italian tutoring outside India is online and the slot has to work in your local evening rather than ours. Tell us what went wrong. A returned essay, a listening mock, a report comment, a speaking test five weeks away: each of those points at a different tutor and a different first session. If Italian is spoken at home, say so and say roughly where the speaker is from, because a heritage student needs accuracy work rather than comprehension work and being put through beginner material is the fastest way to lose their cooperation. Attach one recent piece of the student's own Italian writing if you can. Three hundred unedited words tell a tutor more than a school report does. Two or three tutor options come back with their route experience and their rate in writing, the first lesson is free, and if the fit is wrong we change the tutor rather than asking you to wait it out.
Send the code (0535 or 7164), the grade, the school's country and your time zone
Say what triggered the search and any date already in the diary
Mention Italian spoken at home, and the region it comes from

IGCSE tutoring FAQs
Which Italian syllabus code is my child taking?+
Almost certainly Cambridge 0535, Italian - Foreign Language, unless the school is in the United Kingdom, in which case it may be the 9-1 graded Cambridge IGCSE Italian 7164. The code is normally printed on the course outline, the textbook cover or the header of a school assessment. If you cannot find it, photograph a recent worksheet and send it over and we will identify the route. It matters because past papers, mark schemes and grade descriptors are not interchangeable between the two.
Is IGCSE Italian easier than French, Spanish or German?+
It is easier to begin and not easier to finish. Italian spelling maps onto pronunciation far more predictably than French does, so reading aloud and basic listening come quickly, and students get early encouragement that keeps them going. The difficulty arrives with the verb system, the congiuntivo and the articulated prepositions, which have no English equivalent to lean on. German grammar is harder up front; Italian back-loads its difficulty. Students who coast on the easy start and then meet Grade 10 unprepared are the most common casualties.
What are articulated prepositions and why do they cost so many marks?+
They are prepositions fused with the definite article: di plus il gives del, in plus la gives nella, su plus i gives sui, a plus le gives alle, da plus lo gives dallo. Italian requires the fused form, so writing in il centro rather than nel centro is simply wrong. English has nothing comparable, so students have no instinct to fall back on and no internal alarm when they get it wrong. The errors are small and frequent, which is exactly the kind that accumulates unnoticed across a whole piece of writing.
How does a tutor fix the double-consonant problem?+
With dictation and minimal pairs, repeated until the difference is automatic. The student hears nonno against nono, cappello against capello, copia against coppia, sete against sette, and has to write what they heard rather than what they expected. This is a listening problem before it is a spelling problem: a student who cannot hear consonant length at exam speed will keep mis-spelling regardless of how many rules they are taught. Fifteen minutes a week for a term usually settles it, which is a small investment for a recurring source of lost marks.
When do students actually need the congiuntivo?+
After a set of triggers rather than by feel. Verbs of opinion, hope, doubt and emotion followed by che take it - penso che sia, spero che venga, ho paura che sia troppo tardi - along with conjunctions such as benche, sebbene, prima che and affinche, and impersonal expressions like e importante che. It also appears in hypotheticals: se avessi tempo, verrei. Italians often drop it in casual speech, which misleads students who learn by ear, but written IGCSE Italian rewards using it correctly.
How do I explain essere versus avere in the past tense?+
Verbs of movement and change of state take essere, all reflexives take essere, and most other verbs take avere. So sono andato but ho mangiato, mi sono svegliato but ho dormito. Under essere the participle agrees with the subject: Maria e uscita, i ragazzi sono partiti. Some verbs switch depending on whether an object follows - ho cambiato idea, but la situazione e cambiata. Under avere the participle usually stays fixed, except when a direct-object pronoun comes first: le ho viste, not le ho visto.
My child speaks Italian at home but writes badly. What should tutoring look like?+
Accuracy and register, not comprehension. Heritage speakers usually have excellent listening and fluent speech, and then write with missing double consonants, participles that do not agree, and colloquial forms the mark scheme does not reward. The work is spelling from dictation, agreement chains across article, noun, adjective and participle, and learning the formal written register a Cambridge writing task expects. A tutor should do this without implying the family's Italian is wrong; it is not wrong, it is simply not the register being assessed.
Can we get a home tutor for Italian in Gurugram or Mumbai?+
Sometimes, and you should not assume it. Home tutoring is offered only in India and only where a tutor is currently taking in-person students in your city, and for Italian specifically that pool is thin - most Indian schools offer French, Spanish or German instead, so there are fewer local Italian teachers with IGCSE experience. We will tell you directly if nobody is free near you rather than leaving you waiting. Online is the main route for this subject and it is not a downgrade.
We live in Italy or Switzerland. How do the timings work?+
Sessions are scheduled in your local hours, not Indian ones. Tutors are based in India, and a late-afternoon or early-evening slot in Milan, Rome or Lugano lands in the Indian late evening, which is a slot tutors routinely keep for European families. Tell us your city and time zone in your first message and a specific weekly slot is proposed in your own clock time. Outside India, tutoring is online only - there is no centre or branch to visit anywhere.
How much does an IGCSE Italian tutor cost?+
There is no published rate. The fee depends on the tutor's experience, the grade, how close the exam session is and how often sessions run, and it is quoted in writing for a named tutor before anything is booked. Specialists in smaller-cohort languages are not always priced identically to mainstream subject tutors, which is another reason we quote per match rather than publishing a list. Ask for the number before the trial lesson so you are comparing something real.
How many sessions a week does IGCSE Italian need?+
One a week is the normal baseline in Grade 9 and Grade 10, on the assumption the student does short daily contact with the language between sessions - ten minutes of verb drilling beats an hour once a week. Two a week is common in Grade 11, or when a speaking assessment is approaching, usually split into one accuracy session and one speaking session. Beyond two, the limiting factor is the student's own practice rather than contact hours, and a tutor should say so.
How is the spoken component assessed?+
It is conducted at the school and moderated externally rather than sat as a written paper, and the exact format and timing are set out in the syllabus for your year. Because arrangements and dates vary by school and by series, ask your school directly when it will run and what form it takes, then tell your tutor. That date drives the planning: a speaking test in six weeks means unscripted talk and follow-up questions every session, not more grammar worksheets.
Will a tutor help with coursework or written assignments?+
A tutor will plan with the student, mark a draft, explain each correction and make the student rewrite it themselves. A tutor will not write, translate, rewrite or co-author anything submitted as the student's own work, and will decline if asked. For a language this matters more than usual, because a teacher who has heard a student speak knows immediately when a written piece is not theirs, and the damage from that is far worse than a weak grade honestly earned.
What can Italian lead to after IGCSE?+
It maps onto design, architecture, art history, conservation and restoration, classical music and opera, fashion, automotive engineering and food science - fields where a significant share of the serious institutions are Italian and teach a good deal of their content in Italian. Students often continue to A Level or IB Diploma Italian, and some sit separate proficiency certificates such as CILS or PLIDA, which are independent of the IGCSE. Italian universities generally set their own language requirements, so check them directly rather than assuming an IGCSE covers it.
Our school does not offer Italian. Can my child still take it?+
Possibly, but it depends entirely on the school and on finding an exam centre, and it is the first thing to settle. Some schools will enter a candidate for a language they do not teach; others will not, and private candidacy rules for Cambridge vary by country and by centre. There is also the spoken component to arrange, which needs a school or centre willing to conduct it. Confirm all of this with your school before committing to two years of tutoring.
Is IB Gram affiliated with Cambridge International?+
No. IB Gram is an independent tutoring platform with no affiliation to, endorsement from or partnership with Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel, Oxford AQA or the IB Organization. Codes such as 0535 and 7164 are named only so that families and tutors can describe accurately which route is being taught. The awarding body remains the only authority on syllabus content, entry rules, assessment arrangements and grading, and anything time-sensitive should be confirmed with your school or with the board directly.
What happens if the tutor is not the right fit?+
Tell us and we arrange a different one, without any expectation that you persist out of politeness. The first lesson is a free trial precisely so both sides can test the match before any money changes hands, and most mismatches that surface later are about pace or personality rather than competence - a tutor who moves faster than a nervous speaker can follow, for instance. Raising it in week two costs you nothing. Raising it in month three costs a term of Italian.
Ready to plan IGCSE support?
If a marked piece of writing, a listening mock or a speaking date on the school calendar is what brought you here, send the code your school enters - 0535 or 7164 - along with the grade, the school's country, your time zone, and whether Italian is spoken at home. Two or three tutors come back with the routes they have taught and their rate in writing before anything is booked. The first lesson is a free trial, every session ends with a written note, and the tutor is changed if the fit is wrong. Email ibgram24@gmail.com or message +91 7439 368 115 on WhatsApp.
