A weaker one talks about motivation and confidence. Both matter, but only one of them is what you are hiring for.

The first few sessions should identify which prior-year topics were never covered, then fill them in order of how much they block current work. This takes longer than parents expect and is worth the patience, because building new content on missing foundations is what produced the slump in the first place.

They work for some students and not others, and the difference is predictable. Motivated students in Year 10 and Year 11 who can sit through an hour do well online, especially in written subjects where annotated documents are shared live. Younger students, and any student who needs an adult present to stay on task, do measurably worse. Connection quality matters more than people admit. Raise it, and ask for a re-diagnosis rather than more hours. Adding a second weekly session before knowing which of these applies is the standard mistake and it rarely helps. A tutor who is honest will tell you which one they think it is, including when the answer means fewer sessions rather than more.

Usually, though you should ask about it before you need it. If continuity with a particular tutor matters, ask whether the slot can be held and on what terms.
