If the working is right and the final answer is right but marks are still missing, the problem is presentation: no unit, no formula shown, no substitution line. If he writes fluently but never answers the command term the question asked, that is technique. If the page is blank or the method starts wrongly, that is content. Most Grade 10 students are a mix. A tutor should be able to separate the three in the first session and tell you which is costing the most.

Fees are quoted per session and depend on the level, how scarce the subject is and whether the tutor travels. Higher-tier sciences and less commonly taught subjects sit above general support because the pool of qualified teachers is smaller. Online is usually quoted below a home visit with the same person. Starting with one subject is the sensible route and the one most families take. It lets you judge the arrangement on evidence before extending it, and adding a second subject later is straightforward if the first is going well.

Sometimes, and it is worth asking rather than assuming. Some tutors are genuinely strong across both, particularly at Core level. At Extended tier the two diverge, and a chemistry specialist asked to cover electricity and moments often teaches it competently rather than well. A reasonable test is to ask each candidate which of the two they would rather not teach. The honest ones answer. If the student is weak in both, two tutors usually produce better results than one, even though it costs more to run.

Tell the advisor before the shortlist is built, because it changes who gets suggested. Some tutors are patient with a quiet start and spend the first twenty minutes on low-pressure work; others move fast and suit a confident student. For a nervous child, a home session is often easier than a screen, since familiar surroundings help. Keep the first session short if that helps. And accept that one session is not enough evidence either way. Judge by week three, when a child who is going to open up usually has.

Usually not for the same subject. A batch and a one-to-one tutor covering the same chapter means paying twice for coverage while the individual weakness stays unaddressed, and it eats the evenings the student needs for independent practice. Group coaching does content delivery reasonably and diagnosis poorly. If you keep both, give them separate jobs, tell the tutor what the batch is covering each week, and watch the total hours. A Grade 10 student with school, a batch, a tutor and activities has no time left to actually practise.

Ask for the evidence first, then decide. Marked past-paper work, a topic list showing what has moved, and the tutor's own account of what is still blocking progress. Three explanations are common: the sessions are being used to re-teach class content rather than fix the underlying gap, the student is not attempting anything between sessions, or the fit is wrong. Each has a different remedy. Changing tutors solves only the third. If nothing has been written down in two months, that alone tells you the arrangement was not being run properly.
