IB and IGCSE Tutors and Online Home Tuition in Darjeeling

Home tuition in Darjeeling for IB and IGCSE students means a laptop at a window with a view of the ridge, not a tutor climbing steep lanes in the rain. Lessons are private, live and one to one, so a hill-town family gets a real specialist for Maths, the sciences, Economics or English whatever the weather does to the roads.

  • Lessons run live over video, so a landslide on the road never cancels one
  • Tutors are chosen for the exact board, code and level being studied
  • A free trial lesson comes first, with no commitment attached
  • IB Gram is independent of every school, board and exam body named here

IB & IGCSE in Darjeeling

Studying an international curriculum from a hill town at 2,000 metres

Darjeeling is famous for boarding schools, and that fame creates a confusing first impression. A visitor sees century-old campuses and assumes the town must offer every credential a parent could want. In practice the best-known hill schools, including St Paul's School and Mount Hermon School, prepare pupils for the ICSE and ISC examinations of the CISCE board. We could not find that any of them teaches the IB or the Cambridge and Edexcel IGCSE, so a family that wants those routes has to arrange them separately.

That arrangement is where online tutoring fits. A Darjeeling student, whether a day scholar from Chowrasta, a boarder, or a child in a tea-estate family, can join a scheduled private lesson from a desk or a common room. The lesson is live, the tutor is chosen for the specific syllabus, and the timetable is fixed weekly like traditional home tuition, which is exactly what parents mean when they type that phrase into a search bar.

To be exact about our reach: IB Gram sends tutors to homes only in Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR. Nobody will walk up Hill Cart Road or the lanes of Lebong to your door. On a steep, wet, foggy hillside, that is arguably a feature, since a lesson that depends on video rather than travel is not lost when a road is blocked or the fog closes in.

Tutors here coach and explain. They do not write Internal Assessments, Extended Essays, Theory of Knowledge essays or coursework for students. IB Gram is an independent tutoring service with no link to the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel, or any school mentioned on this page.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to Darjeeling school years

A student in the Darjeeling hills meets these programmes from an unusual angle. Below is each stage, with what a tutor tends to do for a hill-town family.

PYPNursery to Class 5, ages 3-11

IB Primary Years Programme

Young pupils explore big ideas through guided inquiry rather than isolated subject lessons, and finish with an Exhibition where they research and present something that matters to them.

Households in the hills often speak Nepali, Hindi, Bengali or Tibetan at home, so PYP tutoring here leans on English reading confidence and on asking good questions aloud.

MYPClass 6-10, ages 11-16

IB Middle Years Programme

Learning across eight subject groups is judged against criteria for knowing, investigating, communicating and applying, and the Personal Project in the final year is a self-directed piece of work with a process journal.

A Darjeeling student who has grown up on ICSE-style written exams often needs the MYP criteria explained sentence by sentence, with sample responses to compare.

DPClass 11-12, ages 16-19

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects, with three taken at Higher Level, are joined by the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and creativity, activity and service. Final papers are sat in May, and internal assessments are marked by teachers then moderated.

Students who finish ICSE at a hill school and then want the Diploma face a real gap in preparation, which is why our DP tutors often begin bridging in Class 10.

CPClass 11-12, ages 16-19

IB Career-related Programme

Diploma courses are paired with career-related study and a reflective project, a structure suited to students drawn to hospitality, design or applied fields.

In a district whose economy leans on hospitality and tourism, CP's applied focus is a natural conversation, though it is rarely offered near here and needs a school elsewhere.

Scoping a question small enough to answer, with supervision-style feedback and planning; the essay stays the student's own.

IGCSE coverage

IGCSE subjects we tutor

Darjeeling students who take IGCSE usually prepare alongside an ICSE or another school course, so the plan has to fit a crowded timetable. We match on board, code and tier, and we ask tutors whether they have coached students without a Cambridge or Edexcel school behind them.

IGCSE Mathematics 0580

Core / Extended

Extended-tier techniques, algebra fluency and non-calculator accuracy, a useful stretch for ICSE-trained students.

IGCSE Additional Mathematics 0606

Physical and human geography with hill-town examples and fieldwork-question technique.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around Darjeeling school timetables

Online lessons are the format in the hills. What varies is how they fit around a day school, a boarding house or a family business, and we plan around each pattern.

Live private lessons for day scholars

A weekly one-to-one lesson at an agreed hour, with a whiteboard, worked questions and a short note afterwards, planned around the school-run and steep evening walks.

  • Lessons stay on the calendar through fog and landslide weeks
  • One tutor who knows the student's habits
  • A second slot easily added before mocks
  • Written notes so parents can follow the plan

Support for boarders on ICSE or ISC routes

A boarder at a hill school can add IGCSE or IB-style subject support in a fixed prep-time slot, using a school-permitted device and a quiet room.

  • Fits inside boarding-house study hours where permitted
  • Lets a student test IGCSE Maths or Sciences before switching boards
  • Useful for holiday intensive blocks at home
  • Parents kept informed through short progress notes

Private-candidate and transfer preparation

For students planning to enter Cambridge or Edexcel papers privately, or to join an IB school elsewhere, sessions are planned backwards from the exam or admission date.

  • Paper-by-paper timetable with mark schemes from week one
  • Advice on realistic exam centres reachable from the hills
  • Bridging content for a move from ICSE to IB or IGCSE
  • Frank guidance on timelines and deadlines

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Darjeeling

01

Do Darjeeling's famous boarding schools teach the IB or IGCSE?

  • St Paul's School and Mount Hermon School are CISCE schools (ICSE and ISC)
  • No confirmed IB or Cambridge school in the Darjeeling hills
  • IGCSE or IB study is normally added through a tutor or a move
  • Boarding rules on devices decide when lessons can be held

Not as far as we could confirm. St Paul's School, founded in 1823, and Mount Hermon School, founded in 1895, both prepare students for the ICSE at Class 10 and the ISC at Class 12 under the CISCE board. Other well-known hill schools follow similar boards. The international reputation of these campuses is real, but the credential they lead to is Indian.

That distinction matters because parents sometimes assume that a school with a global name delivers a global curriculum. A family planning study abroad may still find ISC accepted by many universities, so the point is not that ICSE and ISC are weak. The point is that if you specifically want the IB Diploma or Cambridge or Edexcel IGCSE, a hill boarding place will not provide it.

For those students, there are three realistic routes. One is to continue at the hill school and add IGCSE or IB-style subject tutoring on the side, for a stronger analytical grounding. The second is a move to a school in Kolkata or elsewhere that runs the curriculum. The third is entering exams privately while studying locally.

We suggest speaking to the school first. Some boarding houses limit devices and prep-time flexibility, and the tutoring slot has to fit inside what the house allows. Holidays, especially the long winter break, are often the easiest time to run intensive blocks.

02

Which Darjeeling families ask for IB or IGCSE tuition?

Hospitality and tea are the town's economic backbone, and they shape who asks. Hotel owners, homestay hosts and travel-company families deal with international guests daily, and they often want children who move comfortably between English, Nepali and Hindi and who could study or work abroad. The IB and IGCSE appeal to that outlook.

Tea-estate managers form a second group. Their postings move them between gardens in the hills and the Dooars, and a child who begins a curriculum in one school can lose continuity when the family relocates. A tutor who holds the syllabus steady across postings gives the child a fixed point.

A third group comes from the armed forces, teaching, medical and administrative professions clustered around the district headquarters and the Lebong cantonment side. These families often have relatives overseas or have lived elsewhere, and they compare boards carefully.

The last group is boarders' parents living far away, some outside India, whose children study in Darjeeling but whose homes are in Sikkim, Nepal, Bhutan or the plains. They tend to ask for the most structured plans, with regular written notes, because they cannot watch the child study.

03

ICSE and ISC, CBSE, West Bengal board, IGCSE and IB: how do they differ in the hills?

Darjeeling's schools mostly follow ICSE and ISC, with CBSE and the West Bengal board also present. ICSE is famously wide and heavy on English, so a student coming from it often has stronger writing than peers from other boards, which is a real advantage for IGCSE English and IB Language A.

The mismatch is in how marks are awarded. ICSE and ISC reward complete, well-organised answers to known question types, and a lot of the content is descriptive. IGCSE and IB Diploma questions frequently ask a student to evaluate or apply, and mark schemes credit reasoning rather than a fixed list of facts.

For a Darjeeling student, the most sensible pathway is often to complete ICSE and then take IB or A Level, or to take IGCSE subjects in Class 9 and 10 in place of some ICSE ones. A tutor can help decide which subjects to transfer first, usually Maths and Sciences.

When it comes to college, ISC keeps every Indian route familiar, while IB Diploma students use equivalence and CUET-UG to reach Indian universities and apply directly abroad. A family should confirm current eligibility conditions for national entrance exams before committing.

04

What does IB and IGCSE tuition cost in Darjeeling, and what changes the quote?

  • Subject and level set the starting point of the fee
  • Weekly hours and session length adjust the monthly total
  • Late starts before exams usually need more sessions
  • No travel cost; missed lessons from weather are rescheduled

We publish no rates, because the fee for a Darjeeling student depends on the case. Once we understand it, the rate goes to you in writing before the trial lesson, and you can compare it with local options without pressure.

The main drivers are subject, level and how much of the course has to be taught rather than revised. IB Higher Level sciences, IGCSE Additional Maths and Extended-tier sciences need more specialised tutors than general school-level English. The number of weekly sessions and their length also shape the monthly figure.

Hill life adds a small factor that plains cities do not have: schedule volatility. Landslides, heavy fog and power cuts can knock out a lesson, so we build spare capacity into the plan and reschedule at no penalty. What we do not charge for is travel, since no tutor travels, and no extra is added for a home in Ghum or Sonada compared with one on the Mall.

The timing of the start matters too. A student who begins well ahead of an exam series spreads the effort and often needs fewer sessions each week. A late start compresses the syllabus and may need a second weekly session, which the plan states plainly so nobody is surprised later.

05

Online tutor, local tuition, boarding-school prep or moving down the hill: what fits?

There is no single right answer, and some families combine two. A day scholar in Darjeeling can get good local tuition for ICSE or CBSE subjects, and for those subjects a local teacher may be the most convenient choice.

For IB and IGCSE content, local tuition thins out. Few teachers in the hills have taught Cambridge or Edexcel papers or the IB Diploma, and the ones who have are often busy with their own school work. A private online tutor can be selected anywhere in India for the exact syllabus, and that is where the format earns its place.

Boarding-school prep periods are helpful for homework and revision, but they are shared and supervised, and they are not built for a specialist teaching a different syllabus. Some houses permit an online slot, and some do not, so it pays to ask early.

Moving down to Kolkata for an IB classroom is a serious decision. It gives a full school, but it takes a child away from the hills and often the family too. Trying online tuition for a term first, in the subject the child finds hardest, is a low-risk way to learn whether the style suits them.

06

How do fog, monsoon landslides, winter cold and festivals shape study in Darjeeling?

Darjeeling gets around 3,100 millimetres of rain a year, and about four-fifths of it falls between June and September. Landslides on Hill Cart Road and other routes are a fact of monsoon life, and even inside town, power and broadband can drop. Online lessons matter most in exactly these weeks, and we hold spare slots so a bad week does not become a lost month.

Winter is the opposite problem. Nights are cold, snow occasionally falls, and homes are not always centrally heated, so students concentrate best in a warm room in the early evening. We place lessons at those hours and keep sessions to a sensible length in January and February.

The festival calendar is distinctive. Dashain and Tihar, the biggest Nepali-speaking festivals, arrive in October and November and pause routine for many families, and Losar and Buddha Purnima matter to Tibetan and Buddhist households. Durga Puja falls around the same time for Bengali families. The plan always leaves these weeks light.

Tourist seasons matter for hospitality families too, since spring and autumn are busy and parents may be working long days. Lessons are timed around the family's real rhythm, not an assumed one.

A Darjeeling study year
SeasonLocal conditionsHow lessons adapt
March to MaySpring tourist season, clearer skies; exams for IB and Cambridge beginTimed papers, steady weekly slots, revision plans
June to SeptemberHeavy monsoon, landslide risk, road closuresSpare online slots and flexible rescheduling
October to NovemberDashain, Tihar, Durga Puja; autumn tourist rushLight weeks, revision and resit preparation
December to FebruaryCold nights, occasional snow, school winter breakWarm early-evening lessons, mocks and IA feedback
07

What can a Darjeeling student do after IB or IGCSE?

  • IB Diploma is treated as equivalent to Class 12 for Indian admissions
  • IGCSE needs a follow-on stage such as A Level, IB or a Class 11 course
  • JEE, NEET and CUET conditions must be checked each year
  • HL choices should match the intended degree and country

Students from the hills look in several directions. Some head to Kolkata, Delhi or Bengaluru for degrees; some join hospitality management and hotel schools; some apply overseas, where the IB and Cambridge results are well understood. The choice of subjects at Class 11 should reflect the direction rather than default habit.

For Indian universities, the IB Diploma is recognised as equivalent to Class 12 by the Association of Indian Universities, and CUET-UG accepts registrations from IB students. IGCSE is a Class 10 level qualification, so a student must follow it with A Level, the IB Diploma or a Class 11 board course. JEE and NEET eligibility for IB and Cambridge students should be checked yearly.

The University of North Bengal, close to Siliguri, and colleges in Darjeeling such as St Joseph's College and Darjeeling Government College are natural local destinations, alongside institutions in Kolkata and Delhi. Students who want IB-style pedagogy at university level often look at liberal-arts programmes.

For overseas study, hospitality, environmental science, economics and computing have all been popular among hill students. A strong HL Maths or Economics score opens the widest set of degrees, while HL Biology and Chemistry are needed for medicine-related routes.

08

IB Maths AA or AI and the sciences: how does a Darjeeling tutor teach them?

Choosing between Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation is the first Maths decision. AA fits engineering, physical sciences and economics with a strong mathematical bent. AI fits students heading to business, hospitality management, geography or psychology. ICSE students often have the algebra for either, and the deciding factor is usually the degree.

In practice, we spend early sessions on the mismatch between ICSE-style solutions and IB-style working. IB awards method marks and expects clear notation and reasoning, and the Exploration asks for a personal mathematical investigation that the student must plan, write and reflect on independently.

In the sciences, the weakest area for many students is data-based and extended-response questions. A Darjeeling student who has done well in ICSE Physics may still be unfamiliar with tasks like explaining a graph's shape or evaluating a method. Tutors train the command terms with real past questions.

Practical work needs a workaround for students without school labs. The Scientific Investigation can be built on simple household equipment, data from a simulation, or an existing dataset, and the tutor explains how to design and evaluate honestly rather than doing the work for the student.

09

Should a Darjeeling IGCSE student choose Core or Extended tier?

If the student might go on to the IB Diploma or A Level sciences and Maths, Extended is the safer choice. Core papers limit the top grade, and the courses that follow assume Extended content. A student from an ICSE background usually has enough grounding to cope with the Extended jump in Maths with proper support.

We decide with a diagnostic rather than an opinion. A short set of Extended-tier questions in the first weeks shows whether errors are in method, arithmetic or reading the question, and the tier decision follows from that evidence.

Pearson Edexcel uses Foundation and Higher tiers, and the same logic applies. Higher tier can reach grade 9, while Foundation caps at 5, which affects what a student can study afterwards.

Tiers can differ by subject. It is quite reasonable for a student to sit Extended in Maths and Physics and Core in a subject they will not continue. We explain the reasoning to parents openly so the choice is informed.

Where we tutor

Darjeeling neighbourhoods and hill areas we support online

Since lessons are online, the map is about timing: how steep a school run is, when the fog rolls in and where the signal is strong. A tutor who knows this plans lessons that actually happen.

Chowrasta and the Mall area

The old centre of town, with hotel, shop and homestay families, and steady broadband in most buildings.

Bhanu Sarani and Rink Mall

Central lanes close to several longstanding schools and colleges, convenient for after-school slots.

Lebong

A lower neighbourhood towards the cantonment side, with families connected to the army and schools nearby.

Ghum

At the top of the ridge, famous for its railway station, colder and often foggier than the town below.

Jorebungalow

A busy market area on the Ghum side, home to traders and school staff, with variable evening signal.

Singamari and North Point

Known for hill-top school campuses and student residences, where boarders study in shared common rooms.

Tukvar and the tea-estate belt

Households linked to tea gardens, where estate housing and managers' families are common.

Lowis Jubilee and Hill Cart Road corridor

Steep, busy stretches where a walk to a tuition class can take longer than it looks on a map.

Kurseong side

The neighbouring hill town on the road towards Siliguri, with families weighing schooling options across both.

Sonada and Rangbull

Outlying hill settlements where a landslide can cut the road for a day and online lessons keep study on track.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Darjeeling

Darjeeling hill schools

The famous boarding schools, including St Paul's School and Mount Hermon School, are CISCE schools preparing pupils for ICSE and ISC, and we could not confirm an IB or Cambridge IGCSE campus in the Darjeeling hills. Families who want either route usually add it through a tutor.

    Nearby: Siliguri

About 80 kilometres down the hill, Siliguri is the plains gateway where many hill families shop, travel and consider a school move. We have not confirmed an IB or Cambridge school there either.

      Nearby: Kolkata

Kolkata is the nearest big city with IB and Cambridge campuses, an overnight train or short flight from Bagdogra, and the usual shortlist for families who decide to move a child to a full IB classroom.

      • Calcutta International School
      • The Heritage School
      • RP Goenka International School

IB Gram is independent. Schools named here are mentioned only for context and do not endorse this service. We checked the two best-known Darjeeling boarding schools and found them to be CISCE schools, not IB or Cambridge schools, and we name no local school as offering either.

No, tutors do not visit homes in Darjeeling. Home visits are limited to Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR. In the hills every lesson is live on video, one to one, on a fixed weekly slot. On steep lanes with heavy rain and fog, a lesson that does not depend on travel is often more reliable than a visiting tutor would be.

Do St Paul's or Mount Hermon offer the IB or IGCSE?+

As far as we could confirm, no. Both are CISCE schools preparing students for ICSE and ISC. We do not name any Darjeeling school as offering the IB or Cambridge or Edexcel IGCSE. If you hear otherwise, ask the school for its IBO or Cambridge listing before making plans around it.

Can a boarder use IB Gram tutoring?+

Often yes, if the boarding house permits a device and a quiet room during study hours or on weekends. Rules differ from house to house, so ask the school first. Holidays, especially the winter break, are the easiest time for intensive blocks. We plan slots to suit what the school allows.

How much does an IB or IGCSE tutor cost in Darjeeling?+

The fee depends on subject, level, weekly hours and how much of the course must be taught from scratch. There is no travel cost, so a home in Ghum costs no more than one on the Mall. We put the rate in writing before the free trial. Weather-cancelled lessons are rescheduled without penalty.

Is broadband good enough in the hills for video lessons?+

In most parts of town it is workable, though monsoon storms and winter power cuts can interrupt it. Outlying hamlets and Ghum can be weaker. We test the connection in the free trial, agree a phone-hotspot fallback and keep spare slots so missed sessions are simply moved.

My child is doing ICSE. Can they switch to IGCSE Maths?+

Yes, many students do this in Class 9 or 10. ICSE Maths gives a good base, and the main adjustment is the style of questions and the need for clear method. A tutor runs a diagnostic, then bridges the gaps. Check with the current school whether it will allow a private entry alongside its own exams.

Which IB subjects are most requested in Darjeeling?+

Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics and English lead, followed by Business Management, Geography and Environmental Systems. Nepali A literature is sometimes requested by students who want their home language examined. If your subject is unusual, tell us and we will look for a specialist.

Will a tutor write the Internal Assessment or Extended Essay?+

No. Tutors explain criteria, help students choose a workable question, suggest how to plan data collection and give honest feedback on drafts the student has written. The submitted work has to be the student's own, and writing it for them could lead to serious penalties from the exam body.

Do you support MYP and PYP students as well?+

Yes. For PYP we focus on English reading, number sense and confident questioning. For MYP we explain the criteria and support Maths, Sciences and languages, and we help keep the Personal Project on schedule. Younger students usually have shorter, more frequent sessions than Diploma students.

What is the difference between Cambridge and Edexcel IGCSE?+

They are two separate boards with different codes and paper styles. Cambridge often uses Core and Extended tiers, while Edexcel uses Foundation and Higher. Both lead to A Level or the IB. We match the tutor to the board your child sits, since each board phrases questions differently.

How do landslides and monsoon affect lessons?+

Because lessons are online, road closures do not cancel them, though power and broadband sometimes fail in heavy rain. We keep spare slots in the plan and move a missed lesson within the week. The monsoon runs from June to September, so we agree the backup arrangement at the start.

How are Dashain, Tihar and winter breaks handled?+

We plan light weeks around Dashain and Tihar, Durga Puja and the winter school break, so families are not squeezed during celebrations. Some students use the long winter holiday for intensive catch-up blocks instead. The written plan marks these dates at the outset so expectations are clear.

When should a Darjeeling student start IB or IGCSE tutoring?+

The ideal start is the beginning of the course, Class 9 for IGCSE and Class 11 for the Diploma. Students moving from ICSE often benefit from a bridging term in Class 10 before the Diploma. A shorter start is possible, though the plan then concentrates on exam technique rather than full teaching.

Is it better to move to Kolkata for an IB school?+

It depends on the family. A move offers a full IB classroom and a peer group, but it means leaving the hills, often splitting the household, and costs considerably more. Many families try a term of online tutoring first to see whether the child enjoys the style before deciding on a bigger change.

What happens in the free trial lesson?+

Your child works through a real topic from their own syllabus with a shortlisted tutor over video. There is no fee and no obligation. Afterwards the tutor sends a short note on strengths and gaps with a suggested plan, and you decide whether to continue or ask for someone else.

Can IB or IGCSE students from Darjeeling still apply to Indian universities?+

Yes. IB Diploma holders are treated as Class 12 equivalents, and CUET-UG is open to them. IGCSE alone is a Class 10 qualification, so it needs a follow-on stage. JEE and NEET eligibility conditions for international boards change, so check them with the official bodies each year.
